CFP 2020 Conference on College Composition and Communication Medical Rhetoric Standing Group's Roundtable
by Molloy, Cathryn S - molloycs 18 Mar '19

18 Mar '19

Medical Rhetoric CCCC 2020 Roundtable CFP Describing and Deconstructing Rhetoric of Health and Medicine’s Commonplaces Ralph Cintron (2010) has noted that topoi or commonplaces are “storehouses of social energy” that “organize our sentiments, beliefs, and actions in the lifeworld” (p. 100). Similarly, convention chair Julie Lindquist’s CFP describes commonplaces as offering a viable way to unpack a given community’s “beliefs and values,” and, by default, commonplaces provide insight into how a field “defines and defends its borders.” Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (RHM), of course, is a growing, interdisciplinary field of study marked by what Melonçon and Scott (2018) have called “methodological mutability” or “a willingness or even obligation to pragmatically and ethically adjust aspects of methodology to the phenomena under study”; they make it clear that RHM is still very much in the process of defining its commonplaces and remains tentative about staking out borders. Still, a strong enough corpus of recognized work in RHM might suggest tacit borders to our work worth further consideration as these topoi might very well impede the important project of intentionally and thoughtfully growing the field. At the same time, RHM scholars must be mindful of the ways they are dipping into and out of related fields of study such that those fields’ commonplaces are considered or even honored. This roundtable, thus, will hope to offer insight into commonplaces that are implicit in RHM work in order to deconstruct any “borders” these might be creating and, in turn, provide guidance on how we might keep our borders fluid and open to new ideas, energies, and participation. Roundtable Objective The objective of the roundtable is to foster interactive discussions between and around these issues and among presenters and the audience. To this end, we invite proposals for modified ignite (5-minute) presentations where participants provide an overview of their primary research or a review of existing literature, discussed within the framework of commonplaces or topoi. Each presenter will be asked to conclude with a question or questions they will pose to the audience to foster discussion. Once all presenters have finished speaking, attendees will break into small groups to discuss the questions/topics presented. Prospective Topics To examine these ideas, individuals are invited to submit proposals for short (5-minute) presentations that will focus on themes and topics such as: • What commonplaces might characterize existing RHM literature, and how does your work relate to or challenge these topoi? • Using commonplaces as a framework, how does RHM interact with related disciplines, such as, for example (but certainly not limited to): disability studies, health communication, or the medical humanities? • If RHM commonplaces erupt organically, how can we be mindful of their appearance and purposeful in how we support, sustain, or interrupt them? • As RHM grows, how can we support work that will keep our borders open to a vibrant variety of perspectives? Submissions Please submit 250-word proposals to molloycs(a)jmu.edu<mailto:molloycs@jmu.edu> by April 26, 2019. Submissions from co-authors considered. Queries welcome. In your proposal, note the following: • The topic/focus of your proposed presentation • How you will address the theme of commonplaces in your presentation • The final question(s) you will use to engage the audience in a conversation at the end of the presentation Responses will be sent out before the CCCC deadline of May 6, 2019. CALL FOR PAPERS: Media, Civic Participation, Social Movements, Democracy and Populism
by Inês Amaral 18 Mar '19

18 Mar '19

CALL FOR PAPERS: Media, Civic Participation, Social Movements, Democracy and Populism Different communication patterns (online and offline) influence individuals to have specific behaviours concerning civic participation and adherence to social movements of different ideological frameworks and scopes. As publics have the chance to channel their ideas through Internet behaviours, literature often identifies Internet as a public space that promotes collective action, and acknowledges that technology is shaping the structure and identity of social movements and ideological groups. The analysis of direct and indirect influences of media practices on civic engagement must consider that democracy is not a static concept and that such engagement is also influenced by political institutions. The media amplifies political discourses and this mediation socially constructs events. The ‘mediated engagement’ of citizens may enhance either civic involvement or political manipulation. In this special issue of the Journal Interações we propose a reflection on Media, Civic Participation, Social Movements, Democracy and Populism. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted covering, among others, the following topics: In this special issue of the Journal Interações we propose a reflection on Civic Participation, Social Movements and Populism. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted (although this special issue is not limited to these topics): Participation culture Media representations, discourses, narratives and counter-narratives Social movements, populism and democracy Collective action and (new) social movements Civic participation and contentious action New forms of civic and political engagement Repertoires of contentious politics in different geographical contexts Media and populist discourses Populist narratives and counter-narratives The rise of populism through the Internet New technologies and social movements Internet-mediated participation Digital activism Deadline for submission of articles: April 25 Notification of acceptance: May 30 Publication: June 30 Any questions should be addressed through the email: interacoes(a)ismt.pt The articles must be submit through the website: https://www.interacoes-ismt.com Guidelines and other instructions for authors can be found on the journal's website: https://www.interacoes-ismt.com Interações is a scientific journal of Instituto Superior Miguel Torga with a biannual edition. by Fabian Ferrari 18 Mar '19

18 Mar '19

*CALL FOR PAPERS:* *Connected Life 2019: Data & Disorder * Monday 24th June (Oxford) & Tuesday 25th June (London) https://connectedlife.oii.ox.ac.uk/ <https://connectedlife.oii.ox.ac.uk/> A two-day multidisciplinary conference supported by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the Alan Turing Institute (ATI) Connected Life 2019 *Data & Disorder* will provide an engaging forum for a cross-disciplinary network of researchers from around the world to consider the broad societal implications of automated data collection, processing, and analysis in all facets of daily life. In recent years, a growing body of literature has exposed the myriad impacts of ubiquitous computing and data collection, including the reinforcement of bias through search engines and data mining, the impacts of predictive risk modelling and automated decision-making on marginalised communities, and the relationship between quantification, surveillance and precarious labour. Amidst a backdrop in which the very bounds of public life can seem to contort with an unfamiliar and frenetic energy – and in which the destabilisation of established institutions has allowed the politics of until-recently peripheral movements to creep nearer to normalisation – this student-led conference aims to provide a framework for critical reflection on the datafication of social life and order. In an effort to include diverse and uncommon perspectives from across the intellectual spectrum, the organising committee of Connected Life 2019 *Data & Disorder* welcomes proposals and expressions of interest from postgraduate students and faculty from all departments, including but not limited to business, computer science, digital humanities, economics, education, history, international relations, law, linguistics, literature, media and communications, philosophy, politics, psychology, and sociology. We further welcome the submission of proposals in a variety of formats, be they empirical, theoretical, qualitative, or quantitative in nature. Proposals from individual authors are welcomed alongside those from multiple contributors. While these categories are intended only as general guidance, proposals that address the overarching theme of Data & Disorder may include: ● AI, automation and labour ● Algorithmic power and emergent forms of social control ● Data abundance ● Data and (anti-) social media ● Data justice and normative approaches to datafication ● Data refusal and digital detoxing ● Data and violence ● Digital media and network infrastructures ● Discrimination and inequalities ● Disinformation and hate speech ● Information/data and modern conflict ● Media, big data, and the future of journalism ● Platform capitalism and the gig economy ● Presence in an era of perpetual update ● Sovereignty and platform governance ● Subversive data, social movements and resistance ● Surveillance and policing ● The politics of algorithms and machine learning ● Weaponized AI Connected Life 2019 *Data & Disorder *further invites proposals for its ‘Ruminations’ sub-panel, envisioned as an open platform for the sharing of novel, unexpected, or preliminary findings at any stage of development. Presentations within the sub-panel are not to exceed fifteen minutes. *Guidelines for abstract submission:* ● Abstracts must be submitted as a Word document in .doc format or as a PDF, and contain the name(s) of the author(s) to: connectedlife(a)oii.ox.ac.uk . ○ Please indicate whether you have a preference for presenting in Oxford on the 24th of June or in London on the 25th of June ○ Please also include 5 to 6 research keywords for your abstract (for example: big data, ethics, surveillance, ethnography, Foucault) ● Abstracts must be received by the extended deadline of 12 April 2019. ● Abstracts must be written in English and may not exceed 250 words. ● Submissions will be subject to a process of blind peer review by a committee and authors will be notified of the status of their submission shortly after the deadline. ● All authors with accepted abstracts will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper for the conference proceedings. We look forward to receiving and reviewing your submissions! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us at connectedlife(a)oii.ox.ac.uk.
