All accepted papers will be listed together in an online virtual special issue published in the journal website. *************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Online Social Networks and Media have a high scientific and economic value because the big data collected from these platforms provide a sort of social microscope to investigate and understand human behavior and interests, both in the cyber and in the physical world. The digital footprints that people leave in OSNEM provide a unique source to investigate and understand (by exploiting data mining, machine learning and complex network techniques) people's behavior (e.g., mobility patterns, opinions and interests spreading, polarization), and societal phenomena (the epidemics spreading, the terrorist networks, the diffusion of opinions, the pulse of a city, the spread of fake news, etc.) and develop innovative services. This special issue seeks high-quality scientific articles (both theoretical and experimental) and survey papers focusing on using OSNEM data for modeling and understanding the human and social behavior in the cyber and physical world. Topics include, but are not limited to: - Social media analysis and social analytics; - Measurement, analysis and modeling of social behavior through OSNEM data; - User behavior modeling with OSNEM data; - Analysis of the use of OSNEM in the urban context; - OSNEM data for Open Source Intelligence - Multidisciplinary applications of OSNEM (economics, medicine, society, politics, homeland security, etc.); - Dynamics of trends, information and opinion diffusion in OSNEM; - Recommendations and advertising in OSNEM; - Spread of news, topics, and opinions; - Modelling and characterisation of societal debates and polarization in OSNEM; - Influence analysis and social influence; - Identification of diffusion sources and influencers; - Establishment and perception of trust and reputation in OSNEM; - Detection/containment of fake news and related sources; - Modelling/analysis/countermeasures to formation of echo chambers; - Methods to modify/control/maximise information and opinion diffusion; - Data-driven approaches to study information and opinion diffusion in OSNEM; Guest Editors Marco Conti, IIT-CNR, Italy Andrea Passarella, IIT-CNR, Italy *** Instructions for submission *** Manuscripts must not have been previously published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences. Papers previously published in conference proceedings are eligible for submission if the submitted manuscript is a substantial revision and extension of the conference version. In this case, authors should indicate the previous publication(s) in the cover letter and are also required to submit their published conference article(s) and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. The submission website for this journal is located at https://www.evise.com/profile/#/OSNEM/login. Please select "VSI:Social&Human_Mining" when you reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified, for consideration by the special issue, the authors should indicate in the cover letter that the manuscript has been submitted for the special issue on Social and Human Mining with Online Social Networks and Media. From casual snaps shared on Instagram to elaborate photo‐realistic visualisations, digital technologies for making, distributing and viewing cities are more and more pervasive. This talk will explore some of the implications of that digital mediation for the bodies assembled in digitally mediated urban spaces. What forms of embodiment are being made visible in these digitally mediated cities, and how? Through what configuration of urban temporality, spatiality and sociality? And how should that picturing be theorised? Drawing on recent work on the visualisation of so‐called 'smart cities', the lecture will suggest the scale and pervasiveness of digital imagery now means that notions of 'representation' have to be rethought. Cities and their inhabitants are increasingly mediated through a febrile cloud of streaming image files; as well as representing cities, this cloud also operationalises particular ways of being urban. The lecture will explore some of the implications of this shift for both theory and method as well as critique. BIOGRAPHY Gillian Rose is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is the author of Feminism and Geography(Polity, 1993), Doing Family Photography (Ashgate, 2010) and Visual Methodologies(Sage, fourth edition 2016), as well as a many papers on images, visualising technologies and ways of seeing in urban, domestic and archival spaces. She is leading the ESRC‐funded project Smart Cities in the Making: Learning from Milton Keynes; her particular interest is how digital visualisations of many kinds operationalise smart cities (SCiM‐MK.org) She also curates the digital | visual | cultural series of events (dvcultural.org<http://em.ucalgary.ca/s0q60K30EL880O2G7c00G0N>). Announcing our 2019 AoIR Conference Keynote Speaker!!
by Jonathon Hutchinson 13 Mar '19

13 Mar '19

Dear AoIRists, We are pleased to announce Professor Bronwyn Carlson from Macquarie University is our 2019 Keynote Speaker for the upcoming AoIR Conference in Brisbane. Professor Carlson is a leading scholar in the field of Indigenous Studies and her research interests include Indigenous identities, Digital Indigenous Humanities and Global Indigeneity. Her latest project, Aboriginal Help-Seeking Behaviours on Social Media explored the rapid uptake of social media by Indigenous people, informal help-seeking and the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engage digital communication technologies. Professor Carlson will address the 2019 conference theme of Trust in the System with her Keynote, Indigenous Internet users: Learning to trust ourselves. She describes the presentation as: “Trust in the System” is contentious, if not spurious for many Indigenous Internet users. “Trust” signifies as a term that embodies (and disembodies) our experiences from over two hundred years of colonisation. Research has shown that Indigenous people have always been early adopters of technology. Over the last decade or so, social media technologies have gradually become a central part of our everyday lives. It offers opportunities to connect across vast distances and diverse populations. It provides a platform to express one’s identity, connect with community, learn, play, seek love, organise political action, find lost friends and family, search for employment, seek help in times of need—and much more. Almost every aspect of everyday life has in some way been shaped, modified or enhanced by social media technologies. Indigenous people have made particular use of social media for agitating for social justice. Information can be distributed, events coordinated and alliances spontaneously forged across great distances largely outside of the surveillance and control of state actors. Assessing the actual impact of online activism is not a straightforward matter—any concept of ‘trust in the system’ demands that we begin to infiltrate that system in order to force ‘it’ to incorporate the views and experiences of Indigenous actors and activists online. We are incredibly honoured to have Professor Carlson deliver our Keynote Address this year and we welcome her to the AoIR Community. You can check out her Academic profile here<https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/bronwyn-carlson/projects/> and she tweets from @BronwynCarlson. Call for submissions - special issue on wearable robotics
by Charles M. Ess 13 Mar '19

13 Mar '19

Dear AoIRists, on behalf of my colleagues in the H2020 cost action on wearable robotics, I am very pleased to call your attention to the call for submissions for a special issue on "Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects of Wearable Robots," to be published in the De Gryter open access journal, Paladyn, Journal of Behavioral Robotics. Broadly, the cost action group aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the ethical, legal, and societal issues in Wearable Robotics, especially as related to the design, deployment and practical use of wearable robots. The special issue is part of their strategy for doing so: you can read the full call here - <https://www.degruyter.com/dg/page/1932> Especially as Human-Machine Communication (HMC) is becoming increasingly significant, both in its own right and for more and more of us in AoIR, I thought this would be of interest to many of us. Please also feel free to distribute to other networks through whatever channels that might be appropriate. Many thanks, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no
