Social media data analysis and GDPR
by Schaefer, M.T. (Mirko) 13 Mar '19

13 Mar '19

Hello list, I am wondering who else on this list does social media data analysis and is concerned about GDPR compliance. Our research group, Utrecht Data School, works with a number of protocols to comply with rules in terms of data management, data processing, cooperation with third parties etc. However, we were pointed to the limits of the exceptions granted for academic, artistic and journalistic use of of data under the GDPR Implementation Act in the Netherlands. Does anyone here has experience in dealing with GDPR and social media data analysis. We would very much like to start a conversation and develop procedures for doing research and complying with the GDPR. Looking forward to learn more about this. ECIS Workshop: Surveillance in the Digital Society
by Marie Griffiths 11 Mar '19

11 Mar '19

Surveillance in the Digital Society Hi All Can I please share with you our workshop details: Workshop announcement: See for details ‘Surveillance in the Digital Society <http://ecis2019.eu/programme/workshops-and-tutorials/surveillance-in-the-di…>’ Surveillance is not a new phenomenon, digitalization has however enabled surveillance of a magnitude we have not seen before. On social media people share the intimacies of their lives, leading to a huge repository of information. Additionally the volume of digital surveillance devices, such as stationary surveillance systems (CCTV), mobile devices such as smartphones, body-worn cameras, cameras in cars, drones and a variety of sensors. The development in algorithms and artificial intelligence, advances also the analytical step in surveillance, for example by face and motion recognition. The workshop invites short papers that reflect upon surveillance in the digital society by looking at how these practices are constructed, organised, experienced and regulated. A non-exhaustive list of different angles may include (but are not limited to): Self-surveillance - The attention one pays to one’s behaviour whilst, actuality or virtuality, being observed. Organizational surveillance - Digitized work-places enabling the monitoring of employees, partners, and customers posing ethical dilemmas Societal surveillance - The disproportionate, unlimited citizen online monitoring, enabled by new anti-terrorism laws, criticized for turning citizens into suspects. Sousveillance - The act of surveilling others as they surveil you Resistance towards surveillance - The use of strategies to avoid or disrupt the surveillance mechanisms The purpose with the workshop A half-day workshop that will consist of a keynote speaker Professor Ben Light and presentation of accepted papers in a round table fashion. The workshop should be seen as a springboard for ideas and early-stage manuscripts. The format is meant to encourage reflective discussions between researchers interested in surveillance in the digital society. The workshop will target junior and established academics that are attending ECIS, and we particularly encourage early career and PhD students to submit. Submissions will be screened but not reviewed, and we will apply a generous policy in this “first round” and accept all papers that fall within the above stated theme/scope of the workshop. Relevant Dates Workshop will be held on June 11 at Kista Campus, Stockholm University Submissions due by April 1 Replies by April 15 Submission Guidelines All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference except for the ECIS 2019 main conference. It is okay to submit a short version of a paper that has been submitted to ECIS, regardless of whether it has been accepted or rejected. All papers should be in PDF format and may not exceed 4 pages (references are excluded from this page count). The format is meant to encourage reflective discussions between researchers interested in surveillance in the digital society. Submissions will be screened but not reviewed, and we will apply a generous policy in this “first round” and accept all papers that fall within the theme/scope of the workshop. Submit your papers here: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ecis2019 <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feasychai…> Questions could be sent to: marie.eneman(a)gu.se <mailto:marie.eneman@gu.se> Keynote speaker We are delighted to announce that Professor Ben Light will be keynote speaker at our workshop. CfP - Resisting Digital Culture: dystopias, distortions, disconnections - 10th May 2019, King's College London
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 11 Mar '19

11 Mar '19

Dear Colleagues, I am happy to announce that the annual KCL digital culture conference will take place on 10th May 2019. The Call for papers closes on 28th March 2019. 200 words abstracts can be submitted via Easychair https://easychair.org/cfp/ResistDigital2019 Best Regards, Paolo Gerbaudo // Resisting Digital Culture: dystopias, distortions, disconnections - 10th May 2019, King's College London Current debates about digital technology are caught in a death spiral of gloom, doom and anxiety. After a long period of optimism that accompanied the explosion of social media and assumptions of their democratic potential, today’s discourse is dominated by fear. Fear about the unchecked power of digital monopolies like Facebook, Google and Amazon; about the (ab)use of social media by far right political movements; about the psychopathologies, risks and trade-offs associated with constant and unyielding connectivity; fears about the radical surveillance enabled by the digital. What are the actual dangers we face in a world where almost every aspect of our life is digitally mediated? What are the ways people are trying to respond to these dangers, individually and collectively? What solutions do society and technology offer for challenging total digital interpellation? This international conference will explore the digital pessimism that is currently engulfing our understanding of the internet and social media, and assess possibilities for resistance. We shall explore a number of connected topics: risks connected to datafication and surveillance; dangers connected to authoritarian uses of the internet; the psychological perils of pervasive connection; and citizen/activist efforts to respond to these threats. The conference will include various panels, on a number of issues including Digital Overload/Digital Detox, Precarity and Automation, Activism and Oppression, Surveillance, Algorithmic Discrimination, Digital Politics. The conference is organised by the Centre for Digital Culture and will take place on Friday May 10th 2019 At King's College London To present at the conference please submit a 200 words abstract here: https://easychair.org/cfp/ResistDigital2019 The Call for Papers closes on 28th March 2019. New Paper on Digital Money and Transactional Surveillance
by Rachel O' Dwyer 11 Mar '19

11 Mar '19

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share a recent paper I authored for the journal of cultural economy on transactional surveillance. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17530350.2018.1545243?af=R Please let me know if you're having trouble accessing and would like a copy, [abstract:Money is an ‘instrument of collective memory’ before it is a means of exchange, a unit of account or a store of value. Money’s status as a memory technology is particularly significant in light of the role that information and communication technologies now play in economic transactions. Many of the new channels and infrastructures for payments, such as magnetic cards, mobile phones, the wired Internet, social media platforms, and RFID technologies, record detailed transactional data alongside a range of other identifying data. We now have extremely detailed records of the many ways that money circulates, is transferred and is spent. This paper concerns this previously latent transactional data and how it is currently recorded, monetised, and used to inform action. What has been recorded in and about money at different moments in time and how are these categories breaking down? Who has access to and ownership over this collectively produced record and how is it driving new data practices and business models based on the monetisation and application of monetary records? And how might re-engaging with money’s mnemonic status help to foreground a politics and ethics of transactional data?] All the best, Rachel O'Dwyer -- http://www.rachelodwyer.com/ +353 (85) 7023779

by Axel Bruns 11 Mar '19

11 Mar '19

Dear AoIRists, This message has also gone out to all current members of the Association of Internet Researchers: I am happy to announce that AoIR is now seeking your nominations for the new Executive Committee, to take office in October of this year and serve until October 2021. Below, you will find: a) a timeframe for the election, b) a description of the AoIR governance system and of the elected positions, c) our nominations and elections processes, and d) some key questions for candidates. A. Timeframe of the Election: 1. The call for nominations opens on 11 March 2019 and will remain open for fifteen (15) days. 2. Nominations for all positions close on 26 March 2019. 3. Candidates will be listed on aoir.org and further information will be made available on our membership system, where discussion fora will let you ask questions of the candidates. 4. Voting begins on 22 April 2019 at our online balloting site and will remain open for ten (10) days. (Details for accessing this site will be sent in a later message through our membership system.) 5. Voting ends on 1 May 2019, expiring at 12:00 noon, U.S. Eastern Time in the State of Delaware. Election results will be announced on air-l. The new Executive Committee is formally introduced and assumes its duties during the AoIR conference in Brisbane, on 2-5 October 2019. More information about our election processes can be found in the AoIR Bylaws: https://aoir.org/bylaws/ Candidates should familiarize themselves with the duties laid out in the Bylaws. I also encourage persons interested in running for a specific position to contact me or any of the current office-holder(s) with any questions. Please also note that the position of Treasurer, in particular, requires a very specific skillset, which is outlined at https://aoir.org/aoirtreasurer/. Prospective candidates for Treasurer should reflect carefully on whether they have these skills. B. AoIR Governance and Description of Elected Positions: The organizational structure of AoIR is simple. There are 5 officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Graduate Student representative). The 9-member Executive Committee consists of these officers, plus the Past President and 3 Open Seat representatives. Elected officials hold their positions for two years. After two years, the Vice President becomes President. Nominations are invited for Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Graduate Student representative, and 3 Open Seats. You may nominate yourself or someone else you think would do a good job. Details on the nomination procedure follow below. Duties of the President: Article 4/Section 6 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Vice President: Article 4/Section 7 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Secretary: Article 4/Section 8 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Treasurer: Article 4/Section 9 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Graduate Student Representative: Article 4/Section 10 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of Open Seat representatives: Represent the membership of AoIR, and contribute to decision-making. Members of the Executive have their membership fees waived for the duration of their term, and pay a reduced conference registration fee. C. Nominations and Elections Processes: Only current members of AoIR can run for a position. They may be nominated by anyone, including themselves. If nominated for more than one position, a nominee must choose to run for one (and only one) position in this election. You may nominate yourself or others. If nominating someone else, confirm with that person that they are willing to run, and eligible to do so. Self-Nominations: Email AoIR Association Coordinator Michelle at and indicate the position for which you are nominating yourself. Please provide in your nomination email a short candidate statement addressing the questions below. Nominating Others: Email AoIR Association Coordinator Michelle at with the name of the person you want to nominate, the position for which you are nominating this person, contact information for the person, and an indication of whether you know if this person would accept this nomination. (If you don't know, we'll contact them and ask.) All candidates for election will be required to provide answers to the questions listed below, have the answers posted to the AoIR election forum, and participate in an online candidate forum. In addition, the Graduate Student candidates must confirm in their response that they comply with the by-laws: the Graduate Student Representative must be actively enrolled in a degree program at the time of nomination and election. Further, because of the specific legal duties and skills requirements for the position of Treasurer, candidates for this position should demonstrate experience with budget management and familiarity with U.S. tax law. Treasurer candidates should provide a detailed statement on their ability to meet the requirements of that role, as outlined at https://aoir.org/aoirtreasurer/. The voting system used by AoIR allows one vote per member for each of the elected positions listed above. Votes will be tallied using a balloting software. In the case of the four directly elected officers, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner; in the case of the Open Seats, the candidates with the highest, second-highest, and third-highest votes shall be declared the three winners of the Open Seats. In the case of tied results for the officer positions, the winner shall be determined by the ballot counters, by drawing of lots, using a method that ensures each of the tying candidates has an equal chance of success and witnessed by at least 1 person independent of the association. In the case of tied results for the open seat positions, the drawing of lots shall be used only when there are more tied candidates than seats available. D. Questions for Candidates (these questions must be answered in your nomination email): 1. What are your qualifications for this position (including prior experience and participation in AoIR)? 2. Please describe two or three short-term goals you would like to achieve through membership on the executive (including a rationale for each and how you would contribute to their achievement). 3. What is your long-term vision for AoIR? 4. What else should voters consider when deciding on whether or not to vote for you? In answering the questions, please be concise and give information specific to the position for which you are nominating, to enable voters to assess your case for election to that position. Candidates for Treasurer should also address the further specific requirements for that position: https://aoir.org/aoirtreasurer/. I sincerely hope that you will consider running, or nominating someone who you think would help advance AoIR and its community of Internet scholars. Many thanks in advance to those willing to serve!
