instagramming space and place
by martha coe 15 Mar '19

15 Mar '19

Hi all, This looks like a wonderfully active, international community and I am new here, so I am also jumping on the bandwagon with an introduction and request for resources. For my doctoral research, I am looking at the varied ways that urban-focused instagrammer (sub)cultures narrate, inhabit and experience space and place through their photographic practices/social media activities (the research is qualitative, using in-depth interviews and ethnography). I am also looking at ways that the concept "instagrammable" has created new avenues and imperatives for city- and community-level placemaking initiatives. I would like to know of any recent articles/research dealing with similar themes; I am especially keen to find out how others have approached Instagram users' (or other platforms) practices qualitatively. I want to make sure I'm not overlooking valuable scholarship that maybe hasn't come across my radar yet, and also to get to know other scholars working in similar methodological/thematic areas. Any and all recommendations welcome! Thanks, Martha *** *Martha Coe* *PhD Candidate* *Department of Sociology* *New York University* *martha.coe(a)nyu.edu <martha.coe(a)nyu.edu>* *917.454.8202* *@placeofexile*

Hello fellow AoIRists! Good day from rainy London. I wanted to share with you a wonderful video essay 'Phantom You[Tube]: Fighting Our Digital Doubles' that was published yesterday by Grace Lee, a YouTuber who I interviewed for my PhD on aspiring and professional online video content creators. In it she reflects on the changing nature of identity and the self in an increasingly social media-saturated world. I thought it was so cool, I'm sure some of you will enjoy it too 🌟 Hope you're all well, Zoe [https://i.ytimg.com/vi/O6C4KPHcSOA/maxresdefault.jpg]<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6C4KPHcSOA&lc=z23pth4opxeawfnm4acdp43acmzb…> Phantom You [Tube]: Fighting Our Digital Doubles - YouTube<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6C4KPHcSOA&lc=z23pth4opxeawfnm4acdp43acmzb…> www.youtube.com With our online and offline lives becoming increasingly connected, to what extent do we create our own other? Join us in Brussels on March 22nd: 30 Years of the web: Where do we go next?
by Katja Bego 14 Mar '19

14 Mar '19

Hi AoiR community, I thought the following event in the European Parliament might be of interest to some of you: *When:* March 22 13:30 - 16:30 *Where: *European Parliament (Brussels) https://www.nesta.org.uk/event/30-years-web-where-do-we-go-next/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Join us on *Friday 22 March* at the *European Parliament* for an exciting afternoon of talks and bold ideas about the future of the internet: how can we build an internet and connected world that is more democratic, inclusive and resilient for all? During this event, we will also launch a compilation of radical new visions for the internet, by both leading and emerging thinkers and artists from Europe and beyond. This event is organised by the NGI Move <https://www.ngi.eu/about/ngi-move/>, EU Engineroom <https://www.nesta.org.uk/project/next-generation-internet-engineroom/> and recently launched NGI Forward projects. This March marks the thirtieth anniversary of the World Wide Web. As we reflect on its history, we must also take the opportunity to think about what we want the future of the web, the internet and everyday life in a connected world, to look like. The internet has undoubtedly brought us a lot of good over the past decades, but its astronomical impact has not always led to the betterment of society. Power over our data is concentrated in the hands of very few players and new technologies are creating cracks in our democracies. We find ourselves stuck between two dominant models: the monopolistic corporate-led internet of Silicon Valley and large-scale government surveillance systems of Beijing. Can we now come up with a third narrative, where citizens and communities are in control and can determine their own future? The Next Generation Internet initiative, the European Commission’s ambitious new flagship programme which seeks to build an internet that’s more inclusive, resilient and democratic by the end of the decade, offers and opportunity for Europe to take charge of shaping such a new narrative. *This event is part of a longer series part of the NGI in which we think about the kind of future internet we would like to see. * *Speakers include: * *Marietje Schaake, *Member of European Parliament (D66/ALDE) Foreign Affairs Trade and Tech *Fabrizio Sestini, *Senior Expert for Digital Social Innovation, European Commission DG CONNECT *Rob van Kranenburg, *Founder of Internet of Things Council *Katja Bego, *Senior Researcher, Nesta *Peter Baeck,* Head of Collaborative Economy Research and Centre for Collective Intelligence Design (CCID) *Ger Baron, *CTO of the City of Amsterdam *Alberto Cottica,* Founder and Research Director of Edgeryders -- Katja Bego | Senior Researcher, Explorations & Futures team and Coordinator of EU Engineroom -- 58 Victoria Embankment London EC4Y 0DS www.nesta.org.uk <http://www.nesta.org.uk/> | Twitter <http://www.twitter.com/nesta_uk> | LinkedIn <http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1868227&goback=%2Egdr_1274367066783_1> | Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/pages/NESTA/116788428355432?v=wall&ref=sgm> If you no longer want to receive emails from Nesta, send an email to info(a)nesta.org.uk <mailto:info@nesta.org.uk>.
