The notion of CPS is to use recent computing, communication, and control methods to design and operate intelligent and autonomous systems using cutting edge technologies. This requires the use of computing resources for sensing, processing, analysis, predicting, understanding of data, and then communication resources for interaction, intervention, and interface management, and finally provide control for systems so that they can inter-operate, evolve, and run in a stable evidence-based environment. CPS has extraordinary significance for the future of several industrial domains and hence, it is expected that the complexity in CPS will continue to increase due to the integration of cyber components with physical and industrial systems. This workshop solicits unpublished research work related to the latest challenges, technologies, solutions, techniques and fundamentals pertaining to communication, computing, networking, control. URL: https://sites.google.com/site/ccncps/2019 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1st International Workshop on Data Distribution in Pervasive and Industrial Internet (DIPI) The ubiquitous presence of data originating from the integration of wireless networks, pervasive computing, industrial equipment and people has led to an increased interest in solutions for distributed data management and efficient data distribution at the edge of the networked environments. At the same time, the cyber-physical convergence, which assists cyber components such as sensing systems and dynamic physical components such as industrial and mechanical systems to achieve close interactions and feedback loops, leads to the industry's transition towards industrial integration and informatization. Those advancements encompass not only hardware and software, but also data integration and embrace a collection of techniques that use data analysis, manipulation, and distribution to achieve higher efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and security within the industrial and pervasive internet. The essence of this vision is the creation of data-driven networks saturated with pervasive sensing, computing, and wireless communication that ideally support the needs of individuals, societies and industries. The existence of large volumes of data in the industrial and pervasive internet has already found its way into many current commercial systems due to the tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies including industrial internet of things, pervasive computing and communications, and industrial cyber-physical systems. DIPI 2019 will provide a leading edge technical forum for researchers, engineers, and students alike to share their state-of-the art research and developmental work in the area of data distribution in industrial and pervasive internet. The workshop intends to attract research contributions focusing on data distribution in pervasive and industrial internet from the following the communities of Industrial Internet, Pervasive Computing and Communications, Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things. URL: http://cnd.iit.cnr.it/dipi2019/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IEEE Workshop on Mobile Energy Sharing Networks (MESN'19) The organizing committee of the IEEE WoWMoM workshop on Mobile Energy Sharing Networks (MESN) is glad to welcome you to the first of this workshop series, which will be held in June 2019 in Washington D.C., USA. The MESN 2019 workshop will bring together academics, researchers, and industry professionals from around the world to discuss and exchange ideas on recent developments, current research challenges and future directions in the use of energy sharing among mobile nodes in different network applications and benefit from each other's findings and initiate collaborations to address the interdisciplinary nature of the topic. URL: https://sites.google.com/vcu.edu/mobile-energy-sharing-networks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshop on Edge Computing and Caching in Communication Networks (E3CN) Edge Computing is among the most active research fields today and is an essential technology in the next-generation communication systems. Edge computing deploys cloud functions in edge nodes such as base stations, access points, routers and smart phones, which is a promising expectation to provide low latency, low cost, proximity and high bandwidth network service. However, transforming this expectation into reality requires significant research efforts. This workshop will be devoted to the presentation of pioneering works targeting edge computing in communication networks. Additionally, the increasing demand for massive multimedia services in cellular networks poses great challenges on network capacity and backhaul links. URL: http://cie.shmtu.edu.cn/e3cn/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SwarmNet: Wireless Networking, Planning, and Computing for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Swarms Recent advances in embedded computing, wireless communication, flight controllers, and miniaturized sensing have enabled the growth of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Networked swarms of such UAVs promise breakthroughs in public safety, commercial, and military applications including search-and-rescue, disaster response, infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, virtual/augmented reality, and ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance). The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers working at the intersection of wireless networking, mobile computing, sensing, robotics, and/or planning to address a myriad of fundamental technical challenges that must be solved before UAV swarms and, more broadly, multi-UAV systems can be safely, effectively, and widely deployed. Seeking extremist social media content
by cbouko 08 Feb '19

08 Feb '19

Dear AoIR members, I am writing to you because I am preparing a project that is based on the analysis of extremist and terrorist content on social media in the European Union. I need to create such a corpus (approx. 2000 items). The International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research will help for me for data about islamist terrorism but I would like to extract data that comprise several ideologies (far-left, far-right, etc.). I also have contact with Europol but the collaboration will probably be complicated. Therefore, I am looking for researchers, activists and/or watchdog agencies that aim to identify extremist content on social media, to help me construct the corpus. Can you please send me names of such experts that I could contact? Many many thanks for your help. All the best, Catherine -- Catherine Bouko Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Groot-Brittanniëlaan 45 9000 Gent Belgium Bureau: B2.06 http://research.flw.ugent.be/en/catherine.bouko

CfP Panel on Governance of Platforms at ECPR 2019
by Reiberg, Abel 07 Feb '19

07 Feb '19

Dear colleagues, please find attached, the call for papers for a panel at the ECPR General Conference in Wrocław (4 - 7 September). Title of the panel:***The Relationship Between Digital Platforms and** **Government Agencies in Surveillance: Oversight of or by Platforms?* If you are interested in participating please submit an abstract (500 words maximum) no later then *15 February* via the ECPR Website (ecpr.eu). *Abstract* Revelations of surveillance practices like those of the National Security Agency or Cambridge Analytica have shown that the digital age is developing into an age of surveillance. What said revelations have also shown is that digital platforms are significantly contributing to this development. As intermediaries between communications and business partners platforms enjoy a privileged position (Trottier 2011). Platform increasingly use this position by surveilling and manipulating end users for the sake of profit maximization (Fuchs 2011, Zuboff 2015). Platforms with a business model of surveillance and manipulation, seem to have become the most successful type of corporations of today. Already two of the three most valuable corporations are operating as such platforms. While platforms are emerging and expanding in ever more established as well as new markets and thus gain influence on large parts of society, the question arises how states are dealing with these new actors and their capabilities. The panel is intended to provide answers to this question by studying the spectrum of state-platform relations. As empirical examples show, the relationship between digital platforms and the states is multi-faced. On the one hand public institutions are partnering with private platforms. The data from platforms is used for example by intelligence agencies to combat terrorist groups, by police departments to search for criminal suspects and by regulatory agencies to counter hate speech or violations of copyrights. On the other hand, the capabilities of platforms can also be turned against the state. As the last US presidential elections showed platforms can be utilized to influence the electorate or to compromise political actors. >From the point of view of the platforms, the state represents on the one hand an instance that may restricts their actions as it declares specific types of business activity illegal. The new general data protection regulation of the EU is one example. At the same time, states are providing the legal basis for the platforms’ activities. In order to promote e-commerce for example many European states liberalized their privacy regulation in the beginning of the new millennium. These examples illustrate the diversity in platform-state relations. The panel will acknowledge this diversity and will bring together works considering various empirical cases as well as theoretical frameworks. We welcome contributions focusing on different political systems as well as different platforms like for example social media, retail, transport or cloud computing platforms. Exemplary questions that may be addressed are: • Which major privacy, anti-trust or media regulations of platforms where enacted on the national level recently? Which types of platforms were addressed and which were not? In how far do these regulations resemble a general trend? To which degree do they effect surveillance practices? • In which areas and by which means of surveillance are platforms already enforcing public policies? Which kind of data is provided by platforms for predictive policing? How are platforms identifying and depublishing illegal content? When are platforms collaborating with intelligence agencies? • How can platforms be regulated efficiently? Which forms of regulations between hierarchical regulation and self-regulation exist and how did these forms emerge? In how far is oversight of platforms comparable to oversight by platforms? • Are policies of platform regulation defusing? If so, which states are setting the standards? • Which international institutions in the field of platform regulation were created so far? Is an international regime of platform regulation evolving? -- Dr. Abel Reiberg Researcher John F. Kennedy Institut | Freie Universität Berlin Lansstr. 7-9 14195 Berlin Tel: +49 30 838 65125

It investigates how these strategies have evolved in response to the changing technological environment in the current algorithmic age. How does propaganda work in the age of social media, recommender systems and botnets? The project is based at the Aleksanteri Institute and associated with the Digital Russia Studies initiative. For more information, see https://blogs.helsinki.fi/digital-russia-studies/projects/strategies-of-per… .
