AMCIS 2019 CFP - Mini-Track: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’19)
by Rosenbaum, Howard S. 12 Feb '19

12 Feb '19

Call for Papers: 25th AMCIS August 15 - 17, 2019, Cancun, Mexico https://amcis2019.aisconferences.org Mini Track Title: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’19) Track: Social Inclusion and Socio-Technical Issues Dear Colleagues, We welcome papers for “Social Theory in Information Systems minitrack for AMCIS 2019. Description This year we are proud to celebrate the 23rd consecutive year of the Social Theory in Information Systems Research minitrack. Since 1996, scholars and researchers have presented cutting edge research, using social theory in their work. Please join us in Cancun for this milestone! STIR’19 solicits papers that use social theory in IS research drawing upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, and organizational theory. We are interested in highlighting research that critically examines the constitution of information and communication technologies (ICTs), and their roles in communities, organizations, and society. We are particularly interested in research that addresses the main theme of the conference “New Frontiers in Digital Convergence.” We seek work that is innovative in terms of multi- and trans-disciplinary uses of social theory and methodologies to study the digital convergence, and work that focuses on the sociotechnical impacts of new and emerging technologies on people in their organizational and social lives across social and technical boundaries. We are interested in questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. As digital convergence has become more pervasive, research has focused on its technical affordances, such as the ways in which communication and information exchange are mediated by multi-modal and increasingly seamless combinations of voice, text, images, video, streaming media and other digital channels. Of equal interest are the sociotechical implications of the ways in which digital convergence is changing organizational and social life. Issues might include critical examinations of the shifting boundaries between the online and offline worlds, producers and consumers, and people and ICTs. They might also include the social impacts of digital convergence within and between organizations. The STIR minitrack has been exploring new frontiers in information systems research for years and we look forward helping you present your work at the conference. Suggested Topics In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and understand: • The implications of social networks for organizations and social groups • Conceptual and empirical work focusing on the ways ICT can promote or hinder social inclusion • The relationships between ICTs and people as they participate in online communities and virtual teams • Online communities of practice, their processes and outcomes • Unintended consequences of technology implementation and use in organizations and in social life • Scientific collaboration and scholarly communication as enabled and constrained by ICTs • The impacts of social computing on our social and work lives PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND TEMPLATE: https://amcis2019.aisconferences.org/submissions/call-for-papers/ Submissions may be of two types: Completed research papers: Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (approx. 5,000 words) and must conform to the AMCIS 2019 submission template. AMCIS 2019 CFP - Mini-Track: Shadow Information Technologies and Practices
by Rosenbaum, Howard S. 12 Feb '19

12 Feb '19

Call for Papers: 25th AMCIS August 15 - 17, 2019, Cancun, Mexico https://amcis2019.aisconferences.org Mini-Track: Shadow Information Technologies and Practices Track: Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) Dear Colleagues, We welcome papers for “Shadow Information Technologies and Practices" minitrack for AMCIS 2019. Shadow Information Technologies and Practices is a new mini-track in the Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) track. This mini-track solicits papers that address the socio-technical implications, outcomes, and disruptive nature of shadow information technology (shadow IT) and shadow practices of organizational actors within complex organizations. Shadow IT refers to artifacts that are used or developed within organizations outside of and without the approval and knowledge of an organization’s IT department. Socio-technical shadow practices, also known as feral practices, are those in which organizational actors engage with either shadow IT or existing systems in ways that differ from the expected practices, and which take place unbeknownst to organizational and IT managers. The emergence of shadow IT and practices can have broad socio-technical implications for organizations, including those related to organizational power relations, IT governance, and security. Given the theme of the conference, New Frontiers in Digital Convergence, we are particularly interested in papers that examine the emergence of shadow IT and practices in response to the introduction of new technologies within business and organizations that trend towards digital convergence. In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and understand shadow IT and practices. Suggested topics could include: • Effects of shadow IT and practices on organizational work-flow, culture, and structure • Implications of shadow IT and practices for organizational power relationships • Conceptual work that categorizes the types of shadow practices that occur within organizations • Ways in which managers can, do, or should respond to the presence of shadow IT and practices • Security and other issues that arise when organizations actors develop and use shadow IT PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND TEMPLATE: https://amcis2019.aisconferences.org/submissions/call-for-papers/ Submissions may be of two types: Completed research papers: Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (approx. 5,000 words) and must conform to the AMCIS 2019 submission template. International Conference on Trust & Digital Memories in Paris

International Conference on Trust & Digital Memories *Should We Trust Our Digital Memories ? Remembering Online: A Long-Term Perspective.* Feb 21-22, 2019 IEA, Hotel de Lauzun, Paris https://www.paris-iea.fr/fr/evenements/should-we-trust-our-digital-memories… This conference on digital memories brings together the most current research from various fields such as media design, cultural studies and philosophy, representing both theoretical and empirical approaches. We will especially focus on the concept of trust, and the many ways it is related to memory in online practices and interactions. With social media, digital archives and self-tracking apps being new means we use to create and share memories, it is important to ask how and why we tend to trust online platforms and digital devices as repositories of our past. Furthermore, do we tend to trust digital memory more than biological memory, considering it to be more objective and stable? As Victor Mayer-Schönberger assesses: “As digital remembering relentlessly exposes discrepancies between factual bits and our very own human recall, what we may lose in the process is the trust in the past as we remember it.” What are the consequences of this potential shift for the way we make sense of ourselves through our past? How individuals and collectives deal with the increasing volume of their digital memories, as well as with new ways of remembering and forgetting through the use of technology, is a challenging question, the answer to which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, this conference’s aim is to gather contributions from variety of disciplines in order to further the discussion on this developing field of study. *Scientific Committee: * Roberto Casati (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris) Serena Ciranna (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris) Jerôme Dokic (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris) José Van Dijck (Utrecht University) Gloria Origgi (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris) Judith Simon (Hamburg University) *Programme: * *February 21, 2019* Morning: 10:30 - 11 am *Introduction*Serena Ciranna (Institut Jean Nicod) 11:00 - 11:35 am *The Dying of my Mother on WhatsApp*Joanne Garde - Hansen (University of Warwick) 11:35 - 12:10 pm *Design to support personal remembering practices using digital memory media*Elise van den Hoven (University of Sydney) 12:10 - 12:45 pm *Remembering A Data-Driven Life: Introducing a Quantified Past*Chris Elsden (Northumbria University) 12:45 - 12:55 pm *Discussion* Afternoon: 2:30 - 3:05 pm *On the creation of digital heirlooms*Daniela Petrelli (Sheffield Hallam University) 3:05 - 3:40 pm *Personal Memory Knowledge Graphs*Aldo Gangemi (University of Bologna), Valentina Presutti (National Research Council, Rome) 3:40 - 3:50 pm *Discussion* 3:50 - 4:20 pm Coffee-break 4:20 - 5 pm *Autistic (Dis) Trust: How autistic people's uses of social media neuroqueers memory*Anna Reading (Faculty of Arts and Humanities King’s College) 5- 5:35 pm *Memory as the ‘Ghost in the Machine’. CFP: Re: Call for Papers: Conference on Disinformation at Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, May 6-7 2019, Denmark
by Anja Bechmann 11 Feb '19

11 Feb '19

Dear Air-list members, I would like to draw your attention to the Call for Papers for our conference on Disinformation at Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus Denmark, May 6-7 2019. Please circulate widely in your networks and consider submitting your work (it is NOT isolated to Nordic researchers even though the network is anchored here). ——————————————— Call for Papers Online disinformation: an integrated view | #1 Defining and Measuring Disinformation Venue: Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark Time: 6-7 May, 2019 DATALAB hosts a conference to kick off the establishment of an interdisciplinary Nordic network of researchers studying online disinformation (NORDIS). The conference focuses on the fundamental problem of observing and measuring disinformation: How can we define and measure online disinformation in a holistic way – without being limited by discipline-specific views? Online disinformation has emerged as one of the most urgent political and democratic issues of recent times. Despite a general understanding of the underlying dynamics behind online disinformation and the availability of generally accepted taxonomies of disinformation, an effective solution is still not available and important aspects are still largely under-researched. Research on disinformation has already made numerous efforts to understand the cultural and the psychological aspects of the phenomenon, but disciplinary specialization has led scholars to focus mainly either on one or the other aspect – resulting in a general lack of conceptual coherence. It is thus becoming more and more evident that a solution to the problem cannot be reached without breaking the boundaries between disciplines. This process will have to involve several fields of research and should not be limited to the academic world, and therefore a proper interdisciplinary approach must be adopted. Organization This is the first of a series of three workshops to be held as part of the initiative “Online disinformation: an integrated view” supported by The Joint Committee for Nordic research councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS) in an effort to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of online disinformation. The other two workshops will be held in Oslo (Norway) and Uppsala (Sweden). All workshops aim to gather researchers from media studies, political communication, computer sciences and philosophy as well as actors from outside academia such as journalists and policy makers. The conference will be the first event in NORDIS, the "Nordic network on the study of online disinformation and its effects on civil and democratic processes” and an excellent opportunity to join the network from the beginning. Joan Donovan – Director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at Harvard Kennedy’s Shorenstein Center – will be a keynote speaker at the conference. Among other things, she leads Data & Society’s Media Manipulation Initiative. Submission of papers Within the context of Defining and Measuring Disinformation, we encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * Operational definition of disinformation * Tracking disinformation propagation * Mapping and quantifying disinformation * Data access and format for measuring disinformation propagation * Methods for analysing disinformation at scale We invite 800-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-oriented papers that address these or associated topics. Abstracts should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details. Nordic Network on Disinformation (NORDIS) The project is a collaboration between four Nordic Universities and organized by the following program committee: * Anja Bechmann, Aarhus University, Denmark * Matteo Magnani, Uppsala University, Sweden * Luca Rossi, IT University Copenhagen, Denmark * Oscar Westlund, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway Abstracts, biographies and contact details should be sent to Lynge Asbjørn Møller via email lyngemoller(a)cc.au.dk<mailto:lyngemoller@cc.au.dk> by 30 March. Notification of acceptance will be sent out 5 April. Presenters can apply for a travel grants, but it is not guaranteed. For the travel grants, young Nordic researchers will be prioritised. Questions related to practical matters about the workshop may be addressed to Lynge Asbjørn Møller via email lyngemoller(a)cc.au.dk<mailto:lyngemoller@cc.au.dk>. Academic questions may be addressed to Anja Bechmann via email anjabechmann(a)cc.au.dk<mailto:anjabechmann@cc.au.dk>.
