Hope you can either come to this conference<https://www.wcl.american.edu/impact/initiatives-programs/pijip/events/icann…> next Monday in DC at American University's law school, or dip into the livestream<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zt-hfwCV0Q>. The two panels--one on trademark/ICANN and one on copyright/ICANN--deal with the issue of what ICANN will become. Will it be a set of privatized registries that set their own terms for content moderation, or return to its origins as a utility, managing domain names on a public service basis? CFP: Proposals Due 4/15 for the Fall 2019 Mapping (In)Justice Symposium in NYC
by Gregory Donovan 19 Feb '19

19 Feb '19

CALL FOR PROPOSALS Mapping (In)Justice: Digital Theory + Praxis for Critical Scholarship
November 7-8, 2019 at Fordham University (New York, NY) Proposals Due: Monday, April 15th More info: https://mappinginjustice.org ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM This symposium creates space for critically considering digital mapping as both a method and an object of analysis. Specifically, we invite submissions that analyze or utilize spatial media so as to rethink and re-present distributions of capital, power, and privilege in historical, contemporary, and speculative contexts. We center “mapping” as an organizing theme for understanding and engaging social (in)justice because of its expanding role in literally and metaphorically arranging contemporary life. The everyday adoption of new spatial media—such as web-based mapping platforms, geosocial applications, and locative data—increasingly orient how society understands the past, experiences the present, and plans for the future. To map social justice and injustice is to consider how spatial media can help draw together dichotomies such as medium/method, art/science, and ontology/epistemology so as to trace, represent, and rework matters of inequity. This symposium thus encourages submissions that explore structural inequities in or through spatial media, especially as they relate to matters of difference—such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and religion. We also encourage submissions that utilize digital mapping to spatially represent historically marginalized perspectives through empirical, textual, archival, participatory, and/or pedagogical methods. We welcome 250 word proposals for Short Papers and Gallery Projects that critically address matters of social (in)justice in historical, contemporary or speculative contexts in relation to—but not limited to—the following: - mapping in digital humanities and computational social sciences - critical and/or feminist GIS - participatory and collaborative mapping - digital geography, neogeography, and the geoweb - spatial learning and digital pedagogy - mapping public histories - aesthetics and representation in digital mapping - mapping of cultural texts and artifacts - mapping media ecologies and augmented realities - smart urbanism and spatial data infrastructures Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Symposium Committee. 2,000 word papers will be requested prior to the symposium for accepted Short Paper proposals. Panels and keynotes will be livestreamed and the symposium proceedings will be archived in Fordham University’s Institutional Repository. A selection of papers from the symposium proceedings will be invited for inclusion in an edited volume or journal issue. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Dr. Sarah Elwood, University of Washington Dr. Nazera Sadiq Wright, University of Kentucky FEATURED PROJECTS “Torn Apart / Separados” - Presented by Dr. Alex Gil, Columbia University “Participatory Mapping with the Morris Justice Project” - Presented by Dr. Brett Stoudt, John Jay College SYMPOSIUM COMMITTEE Gregory T. Best Regards and Cheers from Denmark, Annette Markham ***BEGIN ANNOUNCEMENT*** 1. Course title: (Un)making data: Exploring (auto)ethnographic epistemologies and ‘What counts?’ as relevant knowledge in a datafied era. 2. Course description: The term ‘data’ refers to many things--the representation of traces of human and nonhuman behaviors and experiences, isolated and observed as discrete objects. While not the only way to describe data, this conceptualization has become prominent in the so called digital age, information age, or internet age, for good reason. Our social situations are increasingly embedded in or saturated with digital and global networks of information flows. We leave traces everywhere when we connect to the internet. Massive amounts of information can be collected. Any of us who use the internet know that we are continually producing data that will be archived--by researchers, by marketers, by the companies who provide our devices, platforms, apps, and so forth. The information itself is microscopic and detailed. Whether produced deliberately or not, it is possible to archive these traces, transforming them to units of information that can be then combined with data that has been produced, archived, and transformed elsewhere. Computation of large datasets can reveal interesting patterns and yield novel insights about human behavior. Perhaps because data is so plentiful, minuscule, and detailed, researchers can sometimes forget that it is not meaningful in itself. This mistake sometimes takes the form of assuming the the parts add up to the whole. Or conflating data with knowledge. Whatever the specific form of faulty reasoning, overvaluing the immediate meaning and truth value of data is a problem amplified by the size and number of datasets as well as the commonplace depiction of data as pre-existent and neutral. For interpretive ethnographers, the term “data” has been problematized for decades because the word symbolically indicates an approach fundamentally opposed to inductive, immersive, and interpretive modes of inquiry. How should qualitative researchers respond to the recent tidal shifts toward datafication? How do we design studies when “data” becomes the predominant concept for giving shape or meaning to cultural materiality? We could simply refuse to use the term, since it does not fit well with the qualitative enterprise. Or we could try to replace ‘data’ with other terms. Neither option confronts the actual problem, which is not data itself, or the growth of computation as a way of knowing, but the rise (and reprise) of positivist frameworks and procedures. This course focuses on the concept of data alongside the concepts of embodiment, affect, and situated knowing to explore contradictions and possibilities for qualitative or mixed method social research. It begins with the premise that concepts are always multiplicitous and ambiguous. They function as powerful guides, in that they shape and target our sensibilities, but also allow for specification within contexts. We ask participants to consider, “How do our concepts of data operate on our sensemaking practices?” By unpacking some of our epistemological frameworks and everyday practices, we hope to identify some of the radically different meanings operating in our theoretical frameworks, research design, and everyday activities. Once these dual levels are recognized--a process that requires conscious and critical self reflexivity, one can more strategically frame and use data in multiple and nuanced ways to add layers of meaning or augment to our analytical processes, while at the same time resist recent positivist ideologies of datafication. We also revive the autoethnographic focus on the researcher’s role in the process of making data. We situate autoethnography as a natural part of research as an embodied, lived practice. Understanding, focusing on, and valuing the role of the researcher in generating accounts of phenomena is a hallmark of contemporary interpretive traditions of ethnographic studies. Thus, the course also focuses on how autoethnographic sensibilities can be a strong counterpoint to data-centered orientations, a key element in building ethically sensitive, situated knowledge. 3. To apply: Please send a single PDF containing one page CV, one page motivation statement, and one page discussion of your project, focusing on epistemological, ethical, or methodological concerns. Email to: schlueter.max(a)post.au.dk -- Rolling admission begins immediately and proceeds until seats are filled. For best consideration, submit prior to March 15, 2019. Applications will be processed immediately on receipt. Once your acceptance is confirmed, we will send you to the webshop to register to reserve your seat. No fee for the workshop. CFP - 19th workshop on Computational Models of Natural Argument
by Jodi Schneider 18 Feb '19

18 Feb '19

(with apologies for cross mailing) ** CMNA 2019, the 19th workshop on Computational Models of Natural Argument ** 9th April 2019, Limassol, Cyprus in conjunction with Persuasive 2019 *Special theme: The Role(s) of Argument in Persuasion* DEADLINE 20 February 2019 ===================================================================== CMNA 2019 will be held as part Persuasive 2019, in the beautiful Limassol, Cyprus. Since its inception in 2001, the CMNA workshop series focuses on the issue of modelling “natural” argumentation, where naturalness may range across a variety of forms, perhaps involving the use of visual rather than linguistic means to illustrate a point, for example using graphics or multimedia, or applying more sophisticated rhetorical devices, interacting at various layers of abstraction, or exploiting “extra-rational” characteristics of the audience, taking into account emotions and affective factors. The study of Argumentation, and in particular, argumentative behaviour within natural, real-world communication, compliments the scope and directions of the behaviour change communities and aligns neatly with several aspects of the PERSUASIVE conference. Computers and related digital technologies are tools that are increasingly used to help influence and persuade, as well as to manage and support. Similarly, the use of computers in argumentation has been varied, providing both a medium in which argumentative practises can flourish, and tools with which to study those practises. There appears however to be a natural alignment between the notion of argument as a rational process that can underpin reasoned action, and the idea of persuasive technologies leading to changes in behaviour and habitual action. Special theme for this edition is the *role(s) of argumentation in persuasion*. This theme would be interpreted broadly, to support both polemical positions on, for example, whether argumentation can help or hinder persuasion, and to enable dissemination of recent work at the intersection of the fields. For example, recent work within the argumentation community has considered the use of arguments in formal models of persuasion as well as the role of argumentative dialogue in building motivation for behaviour change. Notwithstanding the special theme, we also solicit contribution addressing, but not limited to, the following areas of interest: - The characteristics of “natural” arguments (e.g. ontological aspects, cognitive issues, legal aspects). - Rhetoric and affect in argumentation and persuasion: the role of emotions, personalities, etc. in argumentation. - The linguistic characteristics of natural argumentation, including discourse markers, sentence format, referring expressions, and style. - The generation of natural argument - Corpus argumentation results and techniques - Argumentation mining - The roles of licentiousness and deceit and the ethical implications of implemented systems demonstrating such features. - Natural argumentation in multi-agent systems. - Methods to better convey the structure of complex argument, including representation and summarisation. - Natural argumentation and media: visual arguments, multi-modal arguments, spoken arguments. - Evaluative arguments and their application in AI systems (such as decision-support and advice-giving). - Non-monotonic, defeasible and uncertain argumentation. - The computational use of models from informal logic and argumentation theory. - Computer supported collaborative argumentation, for pedagogy, e-democracy and public debate. - Tools for interacting with structures of argument. - Applications of argumentation based systems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are accepting submissions of long and short papers, demonstrations and short abstracts.
