Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security (APPS 2019) at ACM UMAP 2019
by Marios Belk 21 Feb '19

21 Feb '19

ACM UMAP Workshop - Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security (APPS 2019) - CALL FOR PAPERS The International Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security, in conjunction with the 27th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2019) Larnaca, Cyprus, June 09-12, 2019 Workshop Website: http://appsworkshop.cs.ucy.ac.cy Paper Submissions: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=apps2019 IMPORTANT DATES Papers submission deadline: March 13, 2019 (23:59 AoE time) Notification: March 26, 2019 Camera-ready papers: April 03, 2019 MOTIVATION & GOALS Millions of users across different continents and countries are daily engaged with privacy and security tasks which are indispensable in modern information systems and services. Such tasks are commonly related to user authentication, human interaction proofs (e.g., captcha), privacy and security pop-up dialogs, setting privacy and security features within online user profiles, etc. Recent privacy and security incidents of famous online services have once more underpinned the necessity towards further investigating and improving current approaches and practices related to the design of efficient and effective privacy and security. In order to achieve this objective, one possible direction is related to providing adaptive and personalized characteristics to privacy- and security-related user tasks, given the diversity of the user characteristics (like cultural, cognitive, age, habits), the technology (like standalone, mobile, mixed-virtual-augmented reality, wearables) and interaction contexts of use (like being on the move, social settings, spatial limitations). Hence, adaptive and personalized privacy and security implies the ability of an interactive system or service to support its end-users, who are engaged in privacy- and/or security-related tasks, based on user models which describe in a holistic way what constitutes the user’s physical, technological and interaction context in which computation takes place. APPS 2019 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on diverse topics related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems, by applying user modeling, adaptation and personalization principles. The workshop will address the following objectives: - increase our understanding and knowledge on supporting usable privacy and security interaction design through novel user modeling mechanisms and adaptive user interfaces; - discuss methods and techniques for understanding user attitudes and perceptions towards privacy and security issues in various application areas; - identify human-centered models for the design, development and evaluation of adaptive and personalized privacy and security systems; - discuss methods for evaluating the impact and added value of adaptation and personalization in privacy and security systems. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Adaptation and personalization approaches in usable privacy and security - Effects of human factors (e.g., cognition, personality, etc.) in privacy and security systems - Novel user interaction concepts and user interfaces for achieving usable security - Cultural diversity in usable privacy and security - Context-aware privacy and security - Adaptive usable security in various domains such as healthcare, IoT, automotive - Trust perceived in patient-centric healthcare systems - Perceived security and usability in patient-centric healthcare systems - Adaptive user authentication policies - Novel approaches to the design and evaluation of usable security systems - Lessons learned from the deployment and use of usable privacy and security features - Ethical considerations in adaptive and personalized privacy and security PAPER SUBMISSION & PUBLICATION All workshop papers must contain original, previously unpublished, research work adhering the two publication types: - Full research papers (6 pages, incl. references), proposing new approaches, innovative methods and research findings. - Short research papers (4 pages, incl. references), presenting works in progress, lessons learned, emerging or future research issues and directions on topics related to APPS. Manuscripts should be formatted using the ACM Standard (SIGCONF) templates (http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) Please submit your paper through the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=apps2019 At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop and present the paper. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. Please assist a grad student on using SNA to study pre- and post-disaster social networks?
by Yosem Companys 21 Feb '19

21 Feb '19

Hey All, I'm writing on behalf of Sweta, who is a graduate student at Purdue University. Sweta is cc'd on this email. Sweta would like to do a comparative case study of the structure and rhetoric of pre- and post-disaster social networks in Nepal and Puerto Rico. Specifically, Sweta has the following questions: 1. What is the best method for collecting pre- and post-disaster data on social media? 2. Is it possible to collect data not just on Twitter but also on all social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)? 3. Which social network analysis (SNA) tool has the easiest learning curve and is the easiest to use to analyze relational structures on social media? I truly appreciate your help and advice, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Yosem

AoIR listserv and other updates
by Axel Bruns 21 Feb '19

21 Feb '19

Dear AoIRists, As you may be aware, we have had problems with the AoIR listserv for the past couple of months: those of you who were subscribed to the digest version of the AoIR mailing-list have not received any updates since 20 December 2018. I am pleased to say that our listserv provider now appears to have fixed these issues, and earlier today many of you will have received a (very) large digest email of all mailing-list posts since December. If you are still subscribed to the digest version of the mailing-list, there's nothing more you need to do: normal service should now resume, and if you're reading this you've already received a further digest email. If you had switched to the non-digest version of the mailing-list in the meantime, to make sure you were still receiving posts, it is now safe to switch back to the digest. Simply go to http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org, enter the email address you're using for the list into the 'Unsubscribe or edit options' box, and set digest mode to 'on' again. On behalf of AoIR, my apologies for the disruption - unfortunately this was out of our hands. SOME IMPORTANT UPDATES Because of the listserv issues, you may have missed a number of important posts from AoIR about our upcoming events and other matters. So, here's a quick run-through with links to further information. 1. AoIR Flashpoint Symposium, Urbino (24 June 2019) The deadline for submissions to the AoIR Flashpoint Symposium in Urbino, Italy, is _today_, so make sure you get your submissions in in time: https://aoir.org/aoir2019symposia/. Registration is also open already. We've created this annual symposia series to be able to address clearly defined emerging issues in Internet research in a small-scale, concentrated setting. Outcomes from the symposia will also be presented at the annual AoIR conference in October. Please note that AoIR symposia are one-day, single-track events for a relatively small group of participants - they accept only a limited number of submissions, and are considerably different from our annual conferences. 2. AoIR 2019 Conference, Brisbane (2-5 Oct. 2019) The deadline for submissions to our annual AoIR conference in Brisbane, Australia, is 1 March, and submissions are now open: https://aoir.org/aoir2019/aoir2019cfp/. On the AoIR Website, we have also published some advice about travelling to Brisbane (https://aoir.org/aoir2019/traveling-to-brisbane/) and Australian visa requirements (https://aoir.org/aoir2019/visainfoaoir2019/) We are also delighted to announce that, compared to previous years, we have been able to reduce registration fees by US$25 across all registration categories. 3. AoIR 2019 Satellite Events (30 Sep. to 1 Oct. 2019) In addition to the AoIR 2019 conference itself, universities around Australia are organising a number of satellite events in the days before the conference. Information about the first three of these is now available from the AoIR site: https://aoir.org/aoir2019/satelliteevents/. These events are organised independently - for more information, please contact the event organisers directly. 4. AoIR Elections 2019 is an election year for AoIR, and its new Executive will take over the coordination of the Association during our annual conference in October 2019. We will soon send more information about the upcoming elections to all AoIR members, so please check that your membership is current (https://members.aoir.org/) and keep an eye on your inbox for further updates. And of course, AoIR is an entirely volunteer-run organisation, so please consider running for one of the positions on the Executive. Nominations will open in mid-March. My apologies again for the listserv disruptions; we hope that the issue is solved for good now. -- Prof. Axel Bruns a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au - @snurb_dot_info ARC Future Fellow, 2014-18 http://www.amazon.com/author/axel.bruns/ Professor, Media & Communication http://mappingonlinepublics.net/ QUT Digital Media Research Centre http://research.qut.edu.au/dmrc/ Creative Industries Faculty, Z6-503, KG http://snurb.info/ Queensland University of Technology +61 7 3138 5548 GPO Box 2434, Brisbane, Qld 4001, Australia CRICOS No.: 00213J

Applications Open for the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute
by Eleanor Marchant 21 Feb '19

21 Feb '19

Hi Everyone! I wanted to bring this great summer institute to your attention since a big focus this year will be on internet policy, particularly in the context of the global south or people elsewhere "at the margins". It's hosted by the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy where I am currently a postdoc. I've been involved in it in the past and really loved it, especially because it brings people from so many countries and backgrounds (academia, policy, advocacy, law) together, the discussion is always fascinating. If you have any questions about it that aren't answered by the blurb the Programme provided below or by the website, let me know! I'd be happy to answer anything. Take care! Eleanor ConflictNET<https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/research-and-subject-groups/politics-and-practice-…> Postdoctoral Fellow Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy Centre for Socio-Legal Studies University of Oxford Tw: @ermarchant<https://twitter.com/ermarchant> | www.eleanormarchant.me<http://www.eleanormarchant.me> ______________________________________________ APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR THE ANNUAL OXFORD MEDIA POLICY SUMMER INSTITUTE THIS YEAR'S THEME: TECHNOLOGY & POLICY AT THE MARGINS Deadline: April 20, 2019 Early Decision Deadline: March 19, 2019 For the past twenty years, the Media Policy Summer Institute has brought together top early career scholars (including advanced PhD students, post-docs and lecturers), media lawyers and regulators, human rights activists, and policymakers from countries around the world to discuss the effects of technology, media, and policy from a global and multidisciplinary perspective. Participants take part in an intensive and interdisciplinary two-week program in Oxford that blends expert instruction with participatory activity, group work, and discussion. With 30 participants each year, hailing from more than 20 countries, the Media Policy Summer Institute has long offered participants unrivalled exposure to the diverse experiences of its global participants as well as a uniquely informed comparative view of their different media and digital environments. The Institute’s alumni are an exceptional and vibrant group who stay engaged and collaborate well past the end of the 2-week Summer Institute through the active alumni network. Many go on to become leaders at top government agencies, corporations, non-profits, and academic institutions around the world. THIS YEAR'S THEME This year, the Summer Institute will focus on the theme of Technology & Policy at the Margins. The internet and other new technologies are rapidly and irreversibly changing global media environments presenting enormous challenges for building policies that both understand the scope of new technologies like artificial intelligence, biometrics, and social media, and can adequately protect the rights of the media and people using them. With the arrival of Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation and social media giants like Facebook and Google being brought to testify before Congress in the Unites States, the last year has shown just how urgent it is to make sense of how our online media lives should and should not be governed. While understanding this changing technology and media landscape is vital in any context, it raises particularly pressing issues for vulnerable populations living “at the margins”. Many, like refugees, Internally Displaced People, those living through conflict, under threat of attack, or under an internet shutdown often lack the ability to advocate for their digital rights or live under regimes that dismiss those rights in part or entirely. With this in mind, this year’s Summer Institute will focus on five key themes through which we will explore many of these challenges to policy and practice, with a particular focus on their effect on populations “at the margins” broadly understood. The five themes are: 1. Extreme speech online 2. Biometric technology in vulnerable populations 3. Innovative efforts to connect the unconnected 4. Algorithmic bias and inequality 5. Internet shutdowns By choosing these themes, we aim to explore issues such as online censorship, social media content regulation, net neutrality, surveillance and security, the spread of disinformation online, and the relationship between technology and democratic participation - amongst others. Participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how these issues influence, and are influenced by, laws and regulations governing the media and communication technologies in diverse contexts and jurisdictions. NEW THIS YEAR This year, for the first time participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm interdisciplinary policy, advocacy, and technological solutions relevant to the five core themes of the Institute. At the end of the two weeks, participants will be able to pitch their interdisciplinary project ideas for the funding. Successful pitches will receive small ‘flash grants’ to explore the project for 6 months and visit Oxford to present findings at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. We also hope to offer residential fellowships at PCMLP for a select few to continue to work on these projects. While the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy is the primary organizer of the Media Policy Summer Institute, we have two key partners who also play an integral role, one joining us for the first time this year. The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania has been a long-time and indispensable partner in organizing this Summer Institute over the years, and brings with it particular expertise in media rights, digital networks, the changing face of journalism and much more. This year, we are delighted to announce that for the first time the University of Johannesburg with be joining this partnership bringing with it a renewed focus on issues around media and internet policy in the Global South. In addition to sponsoring participants and speakers, the unique perspective of the team at the University of Johannesburg will help add depth and diversity to the Institute’s curriculum. HOW TO APPLY Applications for the 2019 Media Policy Summer Institute are now open! Applications are welcome from students and practitioners working in communication, media, law, policy, regulation, and technology. APPLY HERE<https://medialaw.wufoo.com/forms/oxford-media-policy-summer-institute-2019/> The deadline for early decision acceptance: is March 19, 2019 The final deadline for all applications is April 20, 2019 Admission to this programme is highly competitive. On average, we have approximately 400 applicants for just 30 places. At the same time, we proactively work to ensure that those selected come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. To that end, we work with sponsoring partners to offer scholarships to a very select number of participants who would otherwise be unable to attend. For more information on the apllication process, check out our website: http://pcmlp.socleg.ox.ac.uk/news/oxford-media-policy-summer-institute/ where you can find a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions about our application process. Re: [Air-L] [EXT] Re: Searching for Mentor: Twitter API//Data Collection
by Allen-Robertson, James 21 Feb '19

Hi all, I have quite a bit of experience collecting processing and analysing Twitter data at scale using Python, particularly for a couple of projects on Environmental activism on social media, and the Italian antivax debate. I’m also pretty handy with social network analysis, natural language processing and machine learning. I currently run a range of live Twitter monitors and so far our largest dataset is ~4million tweets. Happy to help out in this developing sub-group where I can. On Thu, Feb 21, 2019 at 5:32 AM Heather Walker <hgabel3(a)uic.edu<mailto:hgabel3@uic.edu>> wrote: Hello Esteemed Internet Researchers, My name is Heather Walker and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago. For my dissertation project, I am taking a netnographic approach looking at Twitter and Instagram data. I applied for access to the Twitter API via their developer site, was approved, and now have an access key. I've been trying to learn Python by taking free online courses and watching a million youtube videos. However, I hit a snag every time and usually can't figure out how to fix it. I also have been using DiscoverText (incredible tool), but have already exceeded the data limit, making continued data collection there impossible. I am reaching out via this listserv to see if there are any lovely researchers with experience using the Twitter API to aggregate data who may be willing to mentor me? I am working on several manuscripts right now using Twitter data, so can offer co-authorship through the partnership. My interests and collected data thus far revolve around disability, rights, access, and civic participation, diabetes cultural groups, social movements using hashtags, and social movement hijacking. I am also hoping some of you might know about any potential United-States based workshops that provide hands-on training using big-data digital methods? Thank you for your consideration and shared resources. Cheers! Heather Walker -- *Heather Walker (Gabel), MS* Disability Studies Ph.D. Can

CfP "Forced Migration: Making Sense of a Complex Ecosystem" for the Special Issue of IJIDI
by Violeta Trkulja 20 Feb '19

20 Feb '19

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS A Special Issue of The International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion (IJIDI) FORCED MIGRATION: MAKING SENSE OF A COMPLEX ECOSYSTEM We seek to bring together researchers from the information fields broadly construed, along with researchers in related disciplines, to showcase a range of concepts, practices, and methodologies available for deeper engagement with issues related to forced migration. We invite work offering diverse perspectives on forced migration as a means of enriching our understanding of the range of actors involved in this complex ecosystem. Contributions to this special issue may look at forced migration through the lens of information and media practices, embodied experiences, memory work and curation, discourses and practices around diversity, and community building in a global and digital world. This approach will pave the way for a broader interdisciplinary conversation on forced migration. We welcome a broad spectrum of submissions that touch on the following aspects: * Frameworks that account for diverse information practices related to forced migration (including material, symbolic, affective dimensions); * The evolution of conceptual frameworks for understanding forced migration in an age of migration and displacement (including the role of social media and online spaces in creating/regaining a sense of place; credibility and assessment; multilingual interactions; user-generated content); * Current and future roles of cultural and memory institutions as resources on, and sites for, the documentation and curation of migration experiences and practices in our networked world (i.e., How can we best make space for refugees? Voice and agency); * Understanding the role of design, meaning-making, authenticity, and performativity in the context of diverse migratory experiences; * Practical initiatives and case studies from libraries, museums, archives, non-profit and settlement sectors, NGOs, policymaking and governance bodies around engaging and working with refugees and other forced migrants. We invite fully developed research papers for the Articles section, as well as shorter submissions for the Special sections; the latter may include opinion/viewpoint pieces, work in progress, reports from the field, doctoral projects, and theory-to-practice essays. Submission Process – Important Dates * April 30, 2019: Expressions of interest (name, role and affiliation; Extended abstracts of up to 1,000 words for full research papers, and up to 500 words for contributions to the special section).
