Searching for Mentor: Twitter API//Data Collection
by Heather Walker 22 Feb '19

22 Feb '19

Hello Esteemed Internet Researchers, My name is Heather Walker and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago. For my dissertation project, I am taking a netnographic approach looking at Twitter and Instagram data. I applied for access to the Twitter API via their developer site, was approved, and now have an access key. I've been trying to learn Python by taking free online courses and watching a million youtube videos. However, I hit a snag every time and usually can't figure out how to fix it. I also have been using DiscoverText (incredible tool), but have already exceeded the data limit, making continued data collection there impossible. I am reaching out via this listserv to see if there are any lovely researchers with experience using the Twitter API to aggregate data who may be willing to mentor me? I am working on several manuscripts right now using Twitter data, so can offer co-authorship through the partnership. My interests and collected data thus far revolve around disability, rights, access, and civic participation, diabetes cultural groups, social movements using hashtags, and social movement hijacking. I am also hoping some of you might know about any potential United-States based workshops that provide hands-on training using big-data digital methods? Thank you for your consideration and shared resources. Cheers! 1. What is the best method for collecting pre- and post-disaster data on social media? 2. Is it possible to collect data not just on Twitter but also on all social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)? These two sort of go tot 3. Which social network analysis (SNA) tool has the easiest learning curve and is the easiest to use to analyze relational structures on social media? I truly appreciate your help and advice, and I look forward to hearing from you. Our basic tweet collector, based on Tweepy, and which worked pretty well for us, is available here <https://github.com/ParticipaPY/politic-bots/blob/master/src/tweet_collector…>. You can learn more about the whole project and our approach to collect data in the project README and docs: https://github.com/ParticipaPY/politic-bots/. I am also happy to help you out if you have any questions. We also have a few informal publications about the role of Twitter in Paraguayan Elections, but they are in Spanish (primaries [1 <https://medium.com/@jorgesaldivar/redes-sociales-en-procesos-electorales-89…> ][2 <https://medium.com/@jorgesaldivar/la-importancia-de-perfiles-influyentes-en…>], general elections[3 <https://medium.com/@laconich1991/el-rol-de-twitter-en-las-elecciones-genera…>]). Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Call for Submissions: May 15, 2019
by Communication ＠JITP 22 Feb '19

22 Feb '19

*The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy**General Issue* *Issue Editors:* *Shelly Eversley, Baruch College, CUNYKrystyna Michael, The Graduate Center, CUNY* The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (JITP) seeks scholarly work that explores the intersection of technology with teaching, learning, and research. We are interested in contributions that take advantage of the affordances of digital platforms in creative ways. We invite both textual and multimedia submissions employing interdisciplinary and creative approaches in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Besides scholarly papers, the submissions can consist of audio or visual presentations and interviews, dialogues, or conversations; creative/artistic works; manifestos; or other scholarly materials, including work that addresses the labor and care considerations of academic technology projects. All work appearing in the Issues section of JITP is reviewed by the issue editors and independently by two scholars in the field, who provide formative feedback to the author(s) during the review process. We practice signed, as opposed to blind, peer review. We intend that the journal itself—both in our process and in our digital product—serve as an opportunity to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practices. Additionally, all submissions will be considered for our “Behind the Seams” feature, in which we publish dynamic representations of the revision and editorial processes, including reflections from the authorial and editorial participants. Research-based submissions should include discussions of approach, method, and analysis. When possible, research data should be made publicly available and accessible via the Web and/or other digital mechanisms, a process that JITP can and will support as necessary. Successes and interesting failures are equally welcome. Submissions that focus on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how new technologies play out in both formal and informal educational settings. Discipline-specific submissions should be written for non-specialists. As a courtesy to our reviewers, we will not consider simultaneous submissions, but we will do our best to reply to you within three months of the submission deadline. The expected length for finished manuscripts is under 5,000 words. All work should be original and previously unpublished. Essays or presentations posted on a personal blog may be accepted, provided they are substantially revised; please contact us with any questions at editors(a)jitpedagogy.org. For further information on style and formatting, accessibility requirements, and multimedia submissions, consult JITP’s accessibility guidelines <https://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/submit/#accessibility>, style guide <https://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/submit/#style-guide> and multimedia submission guidelines <https://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/multimedia-submission-guidelines-and-best-…> . *Important Dates* Submission deadline for full manuscripts is May 15, 2019. Please view our submission guidelines <https://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/submit/> for information about submitting to the Journal.

Theory on Demand #28: Communities at a Crossroads by Annalisa Pelizza
by Geert Lovink 22 Feb '19

22 Feb '19

The Institute of Network Cultures presents Theory on Demand #28: Communities at a Crossroads by Annalisa Pelizza Material Semiotics for Online Sociability in the Fade of Cyberculture Download for free here: http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-28-communities-at-a-crossro… How to conceptualize online sociability in the 21st century? To answer this question, Communities at a Crossroads looks back at the mid-2000s. With the burst of the creative-entrepreneur alliance, the territorialisation of the internet and the commercialization of interpersonal ties, that period constituted a turning point for digital communitarian cultures. Many of the techno-libertarian culture’s utopias underpinning the ideas for online sociability faced systematic counter evidence. This change in paradigm has still consequences today. Avoiding both empty invocations of community and swift conclusions of doom, Annalisa Pelizza investigates the theories of actions that have underpinned the development of techno-social digital assemblages after the ‘golden age’ of online communities. Communities at a Crossroads draws upon the analysis of Ars Electronica’s Digital Communities archive, which is the largest of its kind worldwide, and in doing so presents a multi-faceted picture of internet sociability between the two centuries. Privileging an anti-essentialist, performative approach over sociological understandings of online communities, Communities at a Crossroads proposes a radical epistemological turn. It argues that in order to conceptualize contemporary online sociability, we need first to abandon the techno-libertarian communalist rhetoric. Then, it is necessary to move beyond the foundational distinction between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, and adopt a material semiotic approach. In the end, we might have to relinquish the effort to define online or digital communities and engage in more meaningful mapping exercises. About the author: Annalisa Pelizza is a writer, teacher and associate professor in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Twente (NL). Her research unfolds at the intersection of technology studies, communication science and political theory. Before embracing the academic career, she was active in building digital communities, worked as a media art producer and developed large-scale IT infrastructures.

CFP - Languages INTER Networks - SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED!
by Fulop, Erika 22 Feb '19

22 Feb '19

Dear Colleagues, Please see below our conference call, for which the submission deadline has been extended until the 11th of March. Best wishes, Erika Languages INTER Networks Lancaster University, 20-22 June 2019 Call for Papers ‘We nooses tous des bastardi elettronici che usano lingue globali<http://readingclub.fr/events/5956491d9da50cf70d000004/0/text>’ Ours Lingages<https://aabrahams.wordpress.com/2017/10/31/ours-lingages-documentation/>. The internet is my language mother. I speak with a voice that’s not my own, I speak in other voices, not my voice. We are all e-strangers, all nomads that use globish bastard languages. We are the alienated translated (wo)men in-between code and emotion, in-between our wish to be visible and our longing for intimacy. L’entre-deux = void. Can’t we be ‘with’ instead? (Annie Abrahams) Digital artist and performer Annie Abrahams highlights how living in the digital world transforms not only the language(s) we speak, but also our relationship to language(s) and the relationship between languages, together with our relationships to other people. ‘Networked language practices […] are simultaneously local and transnational’, observes at the same time Jannis Androutsopoulos (2015). The digital space makes it easier for human languages to circulate, coexist, interact, and mix in a fluid and flexible fashion - linguistic borders are not removed, but they have shifted and become more porous. Language is never alone. Of necessity, digital texts are composed in at least two ‘languages’ and exist by means of perpetual back-and-forth processes of translation between them: a ‘so-called natural language, which is addressed to humans […]; and computer codes, which (although readable by some humans) can be executed only by intelligent machines’ (Hayles 2006). Hayles goes on to argue that ‘in our computationally intensive culture, code is the unconscious of language’. How can we be ‘with’ languages in their plurality, rather than just in-between them and lost in translation? Digital arts and literature have explored the potential of programmable media to play with and perform linguistic complexity and fluidity both across human languages and between human and machine languages. Everyday users are no less inventive and adventurous in their practices, as they acquire linguistic fragments from the flux, integrate them into their interactions, and create their own hybrid modes of expression. Following up on our first symposium in March 2018, Multilingual Digital Authorship<http://www.authorsandtheworld.com/multilingual-digital-authorship-symposium…>, this conference will focus on projects, works, and any form of creative digital artefacts online or offline, including anything from individual tweets, instapoems, and status updates to interactions and more complex projects, artworks that consciously experiment with linguistic cross-fertilization – or on the contrary, highlight the dangers of linguistic standardization seeking to supress hybridity. The objective is to explore the creative, cultural, and political potential of encounters amongst digital technologies, languages, and creative practices. Confirmed invited speakers and artists: Annie Abrahams<http://www.bram.org/> Jean-Pierre Balpe<http://www.balpe.name/> John Cayley<http://programmatology.shadoof.net/> Ottar Ormstad<http://yellowpoetry.com/> Alexandra Saemmer<http://www.ufr-culture-communication.univ-paris8.fr/spip.php?article355> Rui Torres<https://telepoesis.net/ensino.html> The conference will include an evening of performances open to the general public and will be accompanied by a thematic issue of ZeTMaG<https://www.zetmag.net/>. A selection of the conference papers will be published in a journal special issue. Three types of proposals are therefore invited: (Please indicate in brackets in the title if the proposal is for a Paper, a Panel, or a Performance) 1. 20-minute individual conference papers or panels including three or four papers in English. Topics may include, but need not be limited to: * The coexistence or mixing of (human and/or computer) languages in digital interactions, artworks, and/or creative projects * Hybrid or multiple linguistic and cultural identities in and through creative digital practices * Creative web-based communities across languages and their outputs * The shifting and melting of linguistic borders in digital space, in particular as illustrated by cultural artefacts * Machine translation and its creative uses * Links between digital media, creativity, language(s), and power, including linguistic standardization and its subversion * Fictional and artificial languages in and/or through digital media, including non-alphabetic ones (emoticon, emojicode, etc.) and their creative uses * What is language anyway? What makes a language? What distinguishes languages? What kinds of 'languages' can we 'speak' in the digital space? When does a language begin to be more than one? Submission format: Individual papers: please submit a 200-word proposal, with author affiliation and a 100-word bio-bibliography Panels: please submit a 100-words summary on the overarching objective of the panel, together with a 150-word abstract for each paper, with author affiliation and a 100-word bio-bibliography for each author Please submit your proposal on EasyChair<https://easychair.org/cfp/LIN2019> by Monday the 11th of March 2019. 2. Performances with a digital component, of 10-20 minutes in length, related to any of the above, to be presented in an event to take place on the first evening of the conference, open to the general public. Please submit a 200-word description of the work and the equipment and space required, together with a 100-word biography of the artist(s) (if available, include link to website/previous work). Please submit your proposal on EasyChair<https://easychair.org/cfp/LIN2019> by Monday the 11th of March 2019. 3. Digital artworks to be published in a thematic issue in the experimental digital art magazine ZeTMaG<https://www.zetmag.net/> onLanguage(s)-Space(s), to be launched at the conference. The magazine can accept text, photo, audio, audiovisual formats. (Other formats might be possible, please contact the editors at zetmaglab(a)gmail.com<mailto:zetmaglab@gmail.com> with any queries.) Please send a brief description of the proposed work directly to zetmaglab(a)gmail.com<mailto:zetmaglab@gmail.com>. The submission of final works will be required by 31st May 2019. This conference will be the second and last academic event of a two-year project funded by the ‘Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies’ AHRC Open World Research Initiative (www.meits.org<http://www.meits.org/>) and is part of a series of a series of four conferences on Digital Authorship<http://www.ea-anglais.univ-paris8.fr/spip.php?article1399> run in partnership with the University of Paris 8. The event benefits from additional support from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and partnership with the Electronic Literature Organization (https://eliterature.org/) Postgraduate students and early career scholars are particularly encouraged to submit proposals. Up to three small bursaries for postgraduate speakers will be available to contribute to travel and accommodation costs. More information will be published in due course on the conference website<https://efulop7.wixsite.com/lin2019>. Hi Yosem and Sweta, 1. What is the best method for collecting pre- and post-disaster data on social media? 2. Is it possible to collect data not just on Twitter but also on all social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)? These are sort of connected. I don’t know anything about Facebook. I believe that Instagram no longer has an API (or at least not one that people I know find adequate to research with), not sure about LinkedIn. Another place that I think would be good is Wikipedia. Here are two examples of researchers who used it to understand events of the type you are talking about. Twyman, Marlon, Brian C. Keegan, and Aaron Shaw. 2017. Black Lives Matter in Wikipedia: Collaboration and collective memory around online social movements<https://doi.org/10.1145/2998181.2998232>. In Proceedings of the 20th ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing (CSCW '17). [J2] Keegan, B., Gergle, D., Contractor, N. (2013) “Hot off the Wiki: Structure and Dynamics of Wikipedia’s Coverage of Breaking News Events.”<http://brianckeegan.com/papers/ABS_2013.pdf> American Behavioral Scientist, 57(5): 595-622. Finally, there’s Reddit. I think Google’s “big query” maintains the continually updated archive for Reddit. As for Twitter, the problem is that you can only go a week back in the timeline. There might be a dataset available. Two good places to check are the Harvard Dataverse and the Internet Archive (for which I think the Dataverse is includes). The other thing you can do is search for papers on the topic and then write and ask if they’ll share their data. Two (of I’m sure many) that I know of are: http://faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/ https://cmci.colorado.edu/~palen/papers.html 3. Which social network analysis (SNA) tool has the easiest learning curve and is the easiest to use to analyze relational structures on social media? Assuming by relational structures you mean network statistics, then definitely Gephi. It’s sort of the “photoshop” of network analysis. Just like Photoshop, it won’t be readily apparent how to do even simple things at first, but there are lots of tutorials. If you feel comfortable with basic programming and reading documentation, then for simple things I think NetworkX is a good choice (there’s also a javascript version of it as well I think). Cytoscape (and cytoscape.js) is good, too but I don’t find it as easy to use. Happy to answer any other questions! Benjamin

Hi Heather, I highly recommend Twarc. Although it does require you to use the terminal, it is not hard at all. That’s what I used when I barely knew Python. https://github.com/DocNow/twarc Here’s a nice tutorial: https://timsherratt.org/research-notebook/hacking-heritage/notes/trying-out… It also has a utility for converting the json to csv. It’s hidden in the Twarc folder. Benjamin
