Seeking panelists for IR 2019
by Plothe, Theo 25 Feb '19

25 Feb '19

Dear Colleagues, Apologies for the belatedness of this request; after changing my email affiliation, I've had problems posting to the listserv. I am organizing a panel on Instagram research for the upcoming AoIR conference, and I am seeking participants for the panel. Despite a number of conversations and a few individual papers, that have been few panels dedicated to Instagram in the history of AoIR. This panel seeks to collect and examine research on Instagram specifically as a site of activity. I am looking for panelists who align closely with the conference theme, Trust in the System, but that is not to say this is the only rubric for inclusion in the panel. If you research Instagram and are interested in joining this panel, please reply off-list with a 250-word abstract of your study by February 20 to my email address at plothet(a)savannahstate.edu. I'll contact you by February 21 in order for us to move forward with selected panelists. Thanks for your attention and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Best, Theo Plothe Theo Plothe, PhD Assistant Professor Journalism and Mass Communication Savannah State University

[DEADLINE EXTENSION] - CFP - IFIP WWIC 2019: submit your abstract by March 24, 2019
by simone.bolettieri＠iit.cnr.it 25 Feb '19

25 Feb '19

[Apologies if you got multiple copies of this invitation] -------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS IFIP WWIC 2019 The 17th International Conference on Wired/Wireless Internet Communications http://wwic2019.nws.cs.unibo.it June 17-19, 2019, Bologna, Italy -------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***** (EXTENDED) SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 24, 2019 ***** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Extended versions of selected papers will be invited for publication on a fast track special issue of Computer Communications (Elsevier) journal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to advancements in technology and development of new services, we foresee a tremendous growth of new devices and smart things that need to be connected to the Internet through a variety of wireless technologies. At the same time, the edge of the Internet is increasingly empowered with new capabilities, like pervasive sensing and computing power, which opens the way to new domains, services and business models beyond traditional mobile Internet, such as connected cars, participatory and urban sensing, industrial IoT. As a consequence, new types of information have to be delivered by the network with varying requirements in terms of reliability, transmission rates and latency. To cope with the exponential growth of devices and mobile data traffic, there is a need for clean-slate or evolutionary Internet architectures merging and assembling different network technologies, supporting new paradigms for wired/wireless system planning and optimization, efficient transport over heterogeneous wireless access options, efficient and quality-aware content distribution, and new approaches for unified operations and management of the heterogeneous components, like software-defined systems and network function virtualization. These are only some examples of the challenges that are of interest to IFIP WWIC 2019. The IFIP WWIC 2019 conference takes a broader view to the merge of wired and wireless technologies and welcomes submissions from academia and industry that explore challenges and advances in architectures, algorithms, protocols, and technologies for a global wired/wireless Internet network. Papers that present original work, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis, are solicited. We also encourage work-in-progress and position papers that describe highly original ideas, present new directions, or have the potential to generate insightful provocative discussions. IFIP WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, over the last 15 years, a high-quality level, which is reflected by the paper acceptance rate as well as the level of attendance. Following the conference tradition, there will be a best paper award. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Anticipatory Mobile Networking - Architectures and protocols for unified operations and management in wired/wireless environments - Architectures and protocols for mobile edge/fog computing - Content-centric and user-centric networking in wired/wireless environments - Cross-layer network design and optimization - Data-driven network design and optimization - Delay/disruptive tolerant and opportunistic networking - Emergency communication and public-safety networks - End-to-end QoS support - Game-theory applications in distributed networked systems - Heterogeneous wireless access networks - Internet/Web of Things and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications - Interactions between wireless and optical networks - Intent-based wired and wireless networking - Localisation, tracking, and mobility management - Machine-learning approaches in cognitive radio networks - Machine-learning approaches for network planning, optimization and management - Modelling of heterogeneity aspects - Mobile clouds and mobile edge computing (MEC) - Mobile service level agreements / specifications - Network mobility and handover management - Network Function Virtualization (NFV) - Network security, trust and privacy in in wired/wireless environment - Pricing, charging, and accounting - QoS/QoE mechanisms in wired/wireless environments - Resource management and admission control - Robot and UAV networks - Routing in wired/wireless environments - Satellite and space networking - Seamless inter-networking and self-organisation - Service composition and management - System prototypes, measurements, real-world deployment, and experiences - Software-defined wireless networks - 5G and beyond 5G networks - Traffic characterization and modelling - Transport protocols and congestion control in wired/wireless environment - User-centric networking - Virtual and overlay networks - WiFi hotspot sharing - Wireless ad hoc, mesh, vehicular and sensor networks - Wireless network monitoring - Wearable communications and computing ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prospective authors are invited to submit original papers with unpublished material and not currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Papers should not exceed 12 LNCS formatted pages, including figures, tables, and references. At least one author of each accepted paper must register to the conference and present the paper. Papers accepted and presented at IFIP WWIC 2019 will be published as part of the Springer LNCS. They will also be submitted to appear in Scopus, ISI Web of Science, DBLP and other leading indexing services. Extended versions of selected papers will be invited for publication on a fast track special issue of Computer Communications (Elsevier) journal. AoIR and Digital Methods
by Axel Bruns 24 Feb '19

24 Feb '19

Hi everyone, as the current President of AoIR, I wanted to follow up on the very active discussion regarding digital methods that we’ve seen on the list over these past few days. It’s great to see the enthusiasm for this within our community, and I’m very happy about the amount of organising that’s already started - many thanks to everyone involved in this. As always, AoIR crucially depends on its members volunteering to move these efforts forward - that’s been the case with the work on our ethics guidelines almost since the Association started, and I think it’s the same with digital methods (and of course the two are closely interrelated). So as the informal working group that’s now coming together to discuss methods is developing, I do want us to think about how we might give this effort a more formal space within AoIR’s activities over the longer term. I don’t have a ready-made solution for this, but I would encourage those of you who are getting involved in this discussion, here and on Discord, to keep this question in the back of your minds as you go. We have had general digital methods pre-conference workshops at our annual AoIR conferences for the past five years or so; these have usually been organised by various colleagues at the University of Amsterdam and Queensland University of Technology, and gone through the standard conference submissions process. At times, there have also been further workshops on specific methods, platforms, and questions. I hope that these will continue for as long as people find them useful, and I would encourage anyone with the relevant skills and interests to propose such workshops, as well as papers, panel sessions, roundtables, and fishbowls, for our conferences in this and future years (<hint> submissions for AoIR 2019 close on 1 March </hint>). We will also soon call for expressions of interest to host further AoIR Flashpoint Symposia, and some of these smaller, one-day events could also focus on digital methods questions. But perhaps there is also an opportunity here to make such workshops a more formal, standard part of our conferences and events, in the same way that our Doctoral Colloquium is. In addition, of course, many of you have already highlighted the summer and winter schools, MOOCs, tools, code repositories, and other sources of information that you’ve found useful in coming to terms with various digital methods, tools, and data sources. If we can find volunteers from the working group that is now forming who are happy to commit some time to curating and maintaining this information, we might make this information available through the AoIR site - and perhaps we could even negotiate discounts for AoIR members with the providers of some of the fee-paying services in that list. But perhaps those ideas aren’t everything, and there are other ways in which AoIR can support this effort - if you have other ideas, I’d genuinely like to hear them. We may not be able to support everything (and again, we are a volunteer-based organisation, so if you have a great idea please also get involved in making it happen), but as with the efforts of our Ethics Working Group we can at least provide the platform that AoIR has to help make your ideas more visible and connect those of you who can make them fly. If you have any ideas for what we can do, and are willing to volunteer to make them happen, please feel to follow up here on the list, and/or email me at prez(a)aoir.org. I’ll also post this message to the Discord forum, and hopefully there will be some discussion there as well. Thanks again for everyone’s enthusiasm for this topic - this really is AoIR at its best. Re: [Air-L] hacking the newsfeed
by Sugar, Benjamin N 23 Feb '19

23 Feb '19

Hi Kelly, I thought this might be a good one, and/or have some helpful citations at the very least. Benjamin Designing for Civil Conversations: Lessons Learned from ChangeMyView https://smartech.gatech.edu/bitstream/handle/1853/59080/cmv_chi_paper.pdf Research has shown that people all over the world, and particularly Americans, are divided over many issues – from immigration and gun control to economic and foreign policy. Information bubbles further contribute to these divisions: People prefer to consume content they feel familiar with and see views they agree with. Yet, pluralism and viewpoint diversity are necessary for a well-functioning democracy. In this paper, we explore how we can design interfaces that dial down partisan antipathy and allow users with opposing viewpoints to understand one another. We study ChangeMyView (CMV) subreddit, a community that encourages users to change their opinion by inviting reasoned counterarguments from other members. We use interviews with 15 CMV members to gain insights about the design mechanisms and social norms that allow this community to function well. We also explore how we can replicate such civil interactions between users with different ideologies on other platforms.

Grad student seeking interviewees for surveillance project and children project
by Nurik, Chloe L 22 Feb '19

22 Feb '19

Hi all! I am a PhD/JD student at the Annenberg School for Communication and University of Pennsylvania Law School. I am currently working on two projects that I am seeking interviewees for. I am hoping to conduct telephone/Skype/etc. interviews with academics and experts like yourselves who study surveillance on social media and social media policies for children. The interviews would be conducted in English and uncompensated. Here is a very brief description of each project: 1) Surveillance of activists on social media For this project, I am examining surveillance (primarily governmental) of activists and protestors on social media. I’m hoping to conduct interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the technical components of surveillance, connections with law enforcement, role of platforms, regulatory gaps, and impacts on activists. 2) Children & social media policies For this project, I am examining the impact of self-regulatory social media policies on children, including harm resulting from regulatory gaps in content moderation, privacy, and security online. I’m hoping to conduct interviews to gain a deeper understanding of how children are vulnerable on social media, what regulatory gaps exist, and what policy proposals or initiatives may be explored to better protect children online. Would anyone be willing to share their expertise? I am happy to provide more information about the interview process or research topics. Many thanks!!!! ……………... Chloé L. he Institute of Network Cultures presents Theory on Demand #28: Communities at a Crossroads by Annalisa Pelizza Material Semiotics for Online Sociability in the Fade of Cyberculture Download for free here: http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-28-communities-at-a-crossro… <http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-28-communities-at-a-crossro…> How to conceptualize online sociability in the 21st century? To answer this question, Communities at a Crossroads looks back at the mid-2000s. With the burst of the creative-entrepreneur alliance, the territorialisation of the internet and the commercialization of interpersonal ties, that period constituted a turning point for digital communitarian cultures. Many of the techno-libertarian culture’s utopias underpinning the ideas for online sociability faced systematic counter evidence. This change in paradigm has still consequences today. Avoiding both empty invocations of community and swift conclusions of doom, Annalisa Pelizza investigates the theories of actions that have underpinned the development of techno-social digital assemblages after the ‘golden age’ of online communities. Communities at a Crossroads draws upon the analysis of Ars Electronica’s Digital Communities archive, which is the largest of its kind worldwide, and in doing so presents a multi-faceted picture of internet sociability between the two centuries. Privileging an anti-essentialist, performative approach over sociological understandings of online communities, Communities at a Crossroads proposes a radical epistemological turn. It argues that in order to conceptualize contemporary online sociability, we need first to abandon the techno-libertarian communalist rhetoric. Then, it is necessary to move beyond the foundational distinction between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, and adopt a material semiotic approach. In the end, we might have to relinquish the effort to define online or digital communities and engage in more meaningful mapping exercises. About the author: Annalisa Pelizza is a writer, teacher and associate professor in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Twente (NL). Her research unfolds at the intersection of technology studies, communication science and political theory. Before embracing the academic career, she was active in building digital communities, worked as a media art producer and developed large-scale IT infrastructures.
