Publishing the same article in different languages?
by Raphael Tsavkko Garcia 02 Mar '19

02 Mar '19

Hi all, I know most journals only accept original articles (what is quite obvious for a series of reasons), but I wonder if this also (always) applies for translations and, even if it does, what do you think of publishing the same article in different languages? In my case I often publish in English or Portuguese (my mother tongue), but I research Spanish-Speaking groups/individuals (Basque-Speaking as well) and more than once a few interviewees asked me to publish in Spanish what I wrote about them in English journals as to have a broader reach. But they are right, I definitely should also publish in Spanish, and hence my question. Is it okay, possible or whatever to publish an article that was originally in English in, say, Spanish (or Portuguese)? I know in Brazil it is rather ok to publish an article in Portuguese even if it was published in English before if it is from a relevant author or a very relevant topic for the local academia, but I don't know how it works elsewhere. best, Raphael Tsavkko Garcia Universidad de Deusto http://www.tsavkko.com.br [http://www.tsavkko.com.br] --- Este e-mail foi verificado quanto a vírus pelo AVG. http://www.avg.com

Mailing List Discussion
by Sugar, Benjamin N 01 Mar '19

01 Mar '19

Hey everyone, I thought it might be a good idea to fork this discussion about the mailing list into a new topic. For the backstory, the discussion started at Air-L Digest, Vol 175, Issue 30, Message 4, R: Inquiry on screen shots. I seems the general consensus (which I’ve come to agree with) is that the list should remain as it has for reasons including accessibility of email, archivability, and not wanting the list to become purely announcement based. Having said that, there also seems to be an acknowledgment that this is not without trade offs. The biggest one for me is the inclusion of the entire reply thread in each reply. I did some research and it seems that finding a more automated solution would require some programming of the backend. In lieu of that, perhaps an easier (?) way to mitigate this would be to change the text in the header of the list to something to the effect of: "When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest…” and remove any contents from the previous thread except direct quotations. A threaded web interface can be found at http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org” Benjamin PS: As an aside, the link to web interface that is in the footer of every message is broken.

Inquiry on screen shots
by evelyne wanjiku 01 Mar '19

01 Mar '19

Greetings members, I am conducting a research on dialogues around revenge pornography on social media platforms, fb, Twitter and telegram I am using a discourse analysis approach. As part of the analysis, i have picked out several dialogues and screen shot them. My question is would it be ok for me to publish screen shots from the various platforms? I have taken precaution to disguise/hide the names/identities of those commenting. Has anyone engaged in such? And what would be your advice with publishing screen shots? Reminder [CfP]: iCS Symposium: Social Movements and Parties in a Fractured Media Landscape
by Mercea, Dan 01 Mar '19

01 Mar '19

Dear Colleagues, A reminder that the Information, Communication & Society symposium 'Social Movements and Parties in a Fractured Media Landscape' will take place at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence, Italy, on 1-2 July 2019. Please find below the call for papers together with information about abstract submission and keynotes. The deadline for abstracts is 15 March 2019. All the best, Dan ### Social Movements and Parties in a Fractured Media Landscape Information, Communication & Society Symposium which will be hosted by Cosmos (The Centre for Social Movement Studies) at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence, Italy, on 1-2 July 2019. Keynote speakers: Donatella della Porta (Cosmos, http://cosmos.sns.it/person/donatella-della-porta/) Ethan Zuckerman (MIT, https://www.media.mit.edu/people/ethanz/overview/) Deadline for abstracts: 15 March 2019. Abstracts/biographies/contact details should be sent to dan.mercea.1(a)city.ac.uk<mailto:dan.mercea.1@city.ac.uk>. A selection of papers presented at the symposium will be published in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society (iCS). More info: http://cosmos.sns.it/news/call-for-papers-social-movements-and-parties-in-a…. This two-day symposium held under the auspices of the journal 'Information, Communication & Society' (iCS) considers the shifting terrain of contemporary democratic politics. Over the course of this decade, a wave of popular discontent swept across much of the world, stoked by the financial crisis, the ensuing austerity and deep disenchantment with political institutions in both liberal democracies and autocracies. Social movements channelled and articulated aspirations for greater democratic accountability and participation, more equitable economic policies, greater concern for social welfare and climate change. Against a secular decline in party membership, voter turnout and institutional trust, movements have rekindled a participatory imaginary challenging the status quo of many democratic countries. Criticized for a supposed inability to enact the political and social change they advocated, social movements were harbingers of a new political vehicle, the movement party. The rise and electoral success of party movements-from Podemos in Spain, to Cinque Stelle in Italy, Jobbik in Hungary, Momentum in the UK or La Republique en Marche in France-captured aspirations for progressive change as well as anger and anxieties about globalisation, migration and the socio-economic and cultural upheaval that such processes have wrought. Occupying the breadth of the ideological spectrum-from the far right to the radical left-these movements put forward a radical criticism of political or media institutions, advocating participatory as well as populist reformulations of notions of citizenship, civic practices and organisational structures. Against the odds, they have scaled up, endured and have the potential to become entrenched despite the initially limited resources available to them. Notwithstanding their ideological differences, digital media appear to have provided important opportunities for the emergence of techno-populist 'connective' movements and parties in media systems largely unfavourable to them, thereby posing renewed challenges to incumbents. Considering the above, the symposium will grapple with such questions as: what does the rising prominence of social and/or party movements mean for democracy? What are the consequences of their rise for representative democracy? What explains their presence on both the left and the right of the political spectrum? How does their digital media use bear on their organisational structures and cultures or their relationship with the media? The symposium invites scholars and other informed observers to present papers discussing how over the last decade, social movements, party movements and other collective actors emerging in the fractured contemporary media landscape have produced knowledge, learn and develop new or overhaul existing participatory cultures and techno-populist identities; congeal competitive political agendas that challenge established political positions; rekindle trust and even faith in political leadership and democratic governance; (re)shaped (un)conventional citizenship norms, practices and action repertoires, harnessing affordances of self-publication technologies, data analytics and news media values to maximize their visibility, appeal and reach while also at times critiquing the dominant commercial logics of media and social media companies. Building on these considerations, we encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * Discuss media strategies and/or tactics of social and/or party movements and individual activists, how they relate to ongoing transformation of media systems, shifting media diets and practices that are increasingly dominated by the use of digital and social media; * Map the use of digital technologies in social and/or party movements, the extent to which it inflects on organisational networks, structures and cultures and whether these depart from late-modern and pre-crisis models of political organisation; * Consider how support for social and/or party movements is articulated publicly in squares, on social platforms, through partisan outlets, in mainstream media or combinations thereof and potential reasons for them; * Investigate the language use of social and/or party movements-and responses to it by institutions and various section of the public-particularly as it challenges deliberative norms or if it is associated with disruptive communication techniques such as click-baiting, trolling, spoofing, making use of disinformation or misinformation; * Reflect on the conversion of some movements into parties, the tensions emerging between the grassroots and the leadership once social and/or party movements enter institutions and the extent to which digital media may mitigate or exacerbate such conflicts; * Investigate knowledge transfer and learning processes that transform movements, their support base, organization or goals and the role of digital media in such processes; * Propose ethical methodological innovations especially through the deployment of trace data gathering tools that can facilitate access to and rapport with hard-to-reach, research-apprehensive movement actors like far-right movement parties; * Develop innovative qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods techniques to explore the use of digital media within social and/ or party movements; * Reflect on the bearing of (digital) media and communication strategies and tactics on the electoral success of social and/or party movements in local, national or European elections; * Explore contrasts in the popular mobilization and/or electoral success of populist party movements on the right and the left while contemplating the contribution that digital and social media made to it. We invite 500-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-oriented papers that address these or cognate topics. The abstract should point to study conclusions. It should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details. Abstracts/biographies/contact details should be emailed to Dan Mercea (dan.mercea.1(a)city.ac.uk<mailto:dan.mercea.1@city.ac.uk>). All papers presented at the symposium will receive comments from a discussant. Following the symposium, paper authors will be invited to submit their manuscripts for publication in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society.

Reminder - CFP - Digital Inclusion Policy and Research Conference 18-19 June 2019 London
by Elinor Carmi 01 Mar '19

01 Mar '19

Hi everyone, Now that you have submitted your papers to AoIR's conference I'm here to remind you of about the conference we're organising in 18-19 June 2019, at Liverpool University's London campus - DIPRC2019: Digital Inclusion Policy and Research Conference 2019. Deadline for submissions - 31st March 2019 Acceptance notification will be sent by 25th April 2019. The conference is free of charge. Please see below all the information for the CFP, and feel free to email me if you have any further questions. Have a fantastic weekend, Dr. Elinor Carmi, Postdoc Research Associate - Digital Media & Society, Department of Communication and Media, Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, School of the Arts, Liverpool University, UK. https://elinorcarmi.com<https://elinorcarmi.com/> Twitter: @elinor.carmi<mailto:elinor.carmi@liverpool.ac.uk> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIPRC2019: Digital Inclusion Policy and Research Conference 2019 University of Liverpool in London, Finsbury Square London, UK, June 18-19, 2019 As more of our everyday lives become digital, from paying bills, to contacting companies and services and keeping in touch with your friends and family - it has become crucial to include everyone in the online world. What type of skills do people need to ‘be digital’? Do different people from different ages and abilities need different types of skills and training? And how can we foresee what skills will be needed for future work? While these questions have been occupying the private sector and policy makers, as more tasks become automated and digitalised they become ever more crucial. Evidence shows that inequalities in access to and use of digital media have measurable impacts on the life chances, health and economic wellbeing of citizens. The GoodThings Foundation published a report on September 2018 which identified that over 11 million UK citizens lack the basic digital skills they need to participate fully in our digital economy<https://www.goodthingsfoundation.org/research-publications/economic-impact-…>. As the Foundation predicts, by 2028 the UK will lose over £22 billion of value as a direct result of digital exclusion. Since the introduction of machine learning and artificial intelligence research has shifted to understanding inequalities in complex skills and use. In addition, as ‘fake news’ and misinformation have become common practice by various entities it has introduced new avenues to include in digital literacies. This shift has become key to some governmental digital strategies, such as those of the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and their equivalents around the globe. This conference will bring together academic research with policy makers and stakeholders to review the current state for the art in digital inclusion policy and practice. The conference will draw upon over two decades of research, policy, and practice. Over this time digital inequalities, digital inclusion and digital literacies have changed in response to developments in digital technologies and media. Though key themes have remained, such as: material and financial access; skills and digital literacy; effective use by citizens and communities; the impact of socio-economic factors; motivation and attitudes; and, more recently socio-economic and socio-cultural variations in patterns of usage. Digital inequities therefore have become an important part of broader persistent issues of social equity and justice. The primary aim of this conference is to link up international policy efforts to address digital inequalities, access and skills with the outcomes of recent research at from around the globe. The intention being to support sharing best practice and research insights. The conference will be a mix of invited presentations from policy and research colleagues, along with open paper sessions. For the open sessions we seek presentations that cover empirical research as well as policy and practice interventions, such as: * Data analysis of levels of digital inclusion/exclusion and engagement * Studies on the link between misinformation and data literacies * Studies of the impacts of digital exclusion * Policy interventions * Case studies of initiatives and programmes * Case studies of community impact Submission and Registration Guidelines The conference is FREE of charge. To register go to the Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/diprc2019-digital-inclusion-policy-and-resea…. If you wish to present a paper or case study please submit a 300 word abstract by 31st March 2019 to: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=diprc2019. Acceptance notification will be sent by 25th April 2019. Contact The conference is organised by Professor Simeon Yates and Dr. Elinor Carmi, Department of Communication and Media, Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, School of the Arts, Liverpool University, UK For questions and other inquiries please email Dr. Elinor Carmi - Elinor.Carmi(a)liverpool.ac.uk.<mailto:Elinor.Carmi@liverpool.ac.uk> We look forward to seeing you in June! Venue The conference will run from 18 June to 19 June at the London Campus of the University of Liverpool, University of Liverpool in London, 33 Finsbury Square, London, EC2A 1AG: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/london/ – just off London’s “Silicon Roundabout” district: http://www.siliconroundabout.org.uk/ .

CFP Sponsored Editorial Content: special issue of Digital Journalism (8 April abstract deadline)
by Jonathan Hardy 01 Mar '19

01 Mar '19

With apologies for cross-posting Call for papers for a special issue of Digital Journalism:Sponsored editorial content Amid falling display advertising and subscription revenues, sponsored content has offered publishers the potential for increased earnings, and marketers a means to tackle ad-avoidance and boost engagement (Harms et al., 2017). Sponsored content is now the second most important revenue generator (44%), after advertising (70%) and ahead of subscription (31%), according to a worldwide newsroom survey (ICFJ 2017). Sponsored editorial content is material with similar qualities and format to content that is typically published on a platform, but which is paid for by a third party. Advertising that resembles editorial long predates the digital age, but brands are increasingly involved in the production of publisher-hosted branded content, including material described as paid content, sponsored content, native advertising, programmatic native, content recommendation and clickbait. Sponsored content has been the focus of considerable industry interest over recent years, amid continuing controversy (Wojdynski and Golan, 2016). The inclusion of paid content designed to be ‘native’ to its editorial environment has generated most concerns, ranging from deception and reader awareness (Wojdynski and Evans, 2016) to the impact on editorial integrity, credibility and trust in publishing (Levi, 2015; Piety, 2016; Einstein, 2016). Much research to date has examined regulatory requirements and adherence, forms of labelling and identification and reader awareness and attitudes (Wu et al., 2016; Iversen and Knudsen, 2017; Amazeen and Wojdynski, 2018; Campbell and Evans, 2018). Researchers have examined the adoption of sponsored content in newsrooms (Coddington, 2015; Conill, 2016), including work that explores ‘norm entrepreneurship’ amongst professionals adopting more affirmative perspectives of content curation against critical conceptualisations such as erosion of the ‘firewall’ between ‘church’ and ‘state’, editorial and advertising (Carlson, 2014). Others have examined the emergence of ‘hybrid editors’ (Poutanen et al., 2016), alongside the proliferation of sponsored content production arrangements. Building on such studies, this call invites both conceptual and empirical papers that explore the implications of sponsored content for the practices and study of digital journalism, and for research agendas, across Western and non-Western media systems. Despite the overall growth in scholarship, there has been comparatively little work examining how sponsored content is managed and produced across digital publishing operations, how demarcations between content producers are constructed, and how more liquid identities and affiliations are performed. The merging of editorial and marketing content takes place with increasing levels of automation and with a range of intermediary agencies and processes involved. As practices and formats multiply, there needs to be greater academic convergence to examine sponsored content along a continuum of transactional relationships between media and sources involving payment or other consideration. Research is also needed to integrate considerations of practice and policy-making by exploring the varieties of governance of sponsored content across digital journalism, from the application of formal regulations to rule-making and self-governance at all levels, including non-acceptance. Examining the operation of governance, together with further studies on audience perceptions and responses, can inform wider discussions about regulatory design for digital communications. This special issue invites contributions on the organisation and practices of digital publishers surrounding sponsored editorial content, on the identities, attitudes and reflexivity of journalists and other content producers, and on the influence of modes of governance on behaviour. Papers are also invited that consider the implications of sponsored content for some of the core themes and debates within journalism studies surrounding power, control, agency, ethics and regulation, and for the study and teaching of converging communications activities. Both empirical and theoretical manuscripts; quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches; single-country and comparative research are welcome. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * history and development of sponsored content in digital journalism, * emergent forms and formats across programmatic native advertising, content recommendation, and sponsored editorial content, * institutional arrangements, attitudes and practices surrounding sponsored content in digital publishing, * media business models and the role, or rejection, of sponsored content, * relationships between data, journalism, algorithms, automation and sponsored content, * changing relationships, tensions and convergence across journalism, public relations and advertising, * reader awareness, attitudes and responses, * modes and effectiveness of governance of sponsored content. Information about Submissions Proposals should include the following: an abstract of 500-750 words (not including references) as well as background information on the author(s), including an abbreviated bio that describes previous and current research that relates to the special issue theme.
