Dear researchers, I'm a PhD student at Institut national de la recherche scientifique (Montréal). I just published this article (in French) entitled « Celebrity mothers: what reveals their self-representation on Instagram» (Les mères célèbres sur Instagram : ce que nous révèlent leurs mises en scène de l’allaitement) : https://journals.openedition.org/efg/4791?fbclid=IwAR2dTAHz2oUHkZKz7ZVk8R_H… In the coming months, I will continue my work on these themes. Your comments are more than welcome to improve my research. Best regards, Chantal Bayard PhD student, Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS)

Sad by Design
by Geert Lovink 28 Feb '19

28 Feb '19

Dear air-l members, I am proud to present you my next essay called Sad by Design, published by the web magazine Eurozine in Vienna: https://www.eurozine.com/sad-by-design/ <https://www.eurozine.com/sad-by-design/>. It is the title chapter of my next book, which comes out over the next couple of months in Italian (UBI), English (Pluto Press), Spanish and German. In this essay I am investigating the many dimensions of ‘technological sadness’. I quickly realized there are many, conflicting, emotions. I hesitate to look at the entire world from the lense of sadness this or sadness that--but it is a strong angle nontheless. I hope you enjoy my attempt to overcome easy positions of refusal of and contempt of social media. At our Institute of Network Cultures we’re devoted to social media alternatives for many years now (Unlike Us was founded in 2011). This political position, however, should not stop us from investigating the messy emotional world of the online billions. Here's a fragment. Best from Geert — "In the online context, sadness appears as a short moment of indecisiveness, a flash that opens up the possibility of a reflection. The frequently used ‘sad’ label is a vehicle, a strange attractor to enter the liquid mess called social media. Sadness is a container. Each and every situation can potentially be qualified as ‘sad’. Through this mild form of suffering, we enter the blues of being in the world. When something’s sad, things around it become grey. You trust the machine because you feel you’re in control of it. You want to go from zero to hero. But then your propped-up ego implodes and the failure of self-esteem becomes apparent again. The price of self-control in an age of instant gratification is high. We long to revolt against the restless zombie inside us, but we don’t know how. Our psychic armour is thin and eroded from within, open to ‘behavioural modifications’. Sadness arises at the point we’re exhausted by the online world. After yet another app session in which we failed to make a date, purchased a ticket and did a quick round of videos, the post-dopamine mood hits us hard. The sheer busyness and self-importance of the world makes you feel joyless. After a dive into the network we’re drained and feel socially awkward. The swiping finger is tired and we have to stop."

Important Dates Paper Submission: 8th March Acceptance Notification: 1st April Camera Ready: 15th April Early Registration: 10th April Scope The Internet of Things is a paradigm that assumes a pervasive presence in the environment of many smart things, including sensors, actuators, embedded systems and other similar devices. The development of IoT, however, has reached a crossroads, which means that without intelligence, an IoT system will act as an ordinary information transfer system. Emerging IoT applications in various fields, including smart city, smart home, smart grid, e-health, intelligent transportation systems, etc., require trustworthy networking solutions that are resilient against high mobility, high density, disasters, infrastructure failures, cyberattacks, and other disruptions. This interdisciplinary landscape of IoT applications demands researchers from different areas such as machine learning, computational intelligence, optimization, distributed computing, embedded systems, and big data to synergize their efforts in better understanding the untapped opportunities to produce highly efficient, deployable, intelligent IoT systems. Topics (Not limited to): Computational Intelligence for the IoT Performance evaluation for the IoT Machine Learning in IoT and Smart Systems Dependability and Fault Tolerance in Smart Systems Big Data and data Miningfor the IoT Intelligent Network Technologies for the IoT Swarm and Multi-Agent Models for IoT Embedded Multiagent Systems Collective and Collaborative Robotics Applications of the IoT Smart Systems in Different industry verticals IoT platforms Blockchain for the IoT IoT Intrusion Detection Trust and Privacy in IoT Cloud Computing for the IoT Data Fusion from the IoT Program Chairs Dr. Vasos Vassiliou, University of Cyprus and RISE Research Center on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies Dr. Zinonas Zinonos, Neapolis University of Paphos Dr. Loizos Michael, Open University of Cyprus and RISE Research Center on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies Dr. Stelios Timotheou, University of Cyprus and KIOS Center on Intelligent Systems Submission instructions Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts reporting applied or technical research. Innovations in Online Research A Network for PGRs Launch Event Wednesday May 9, 2019 The University of Manchester The Innovations in Online Research Network is a regional academic group that aspires to connect postgraduate researchers across the North West of England interested in online research methods. We also aim to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research opportunities for all involved. This new network will be launched with the first Innovations in Online Research Workshop, on 9 May 2019 (9:30-4:45). This FREE PGR-led workshop will be hosted by The University of Manchester’s Sociology Department in conjunction with postgraduate researchers from The University of Liverpool and Lancaster University. The event is open to all PGR students in the social sciences who use or plan to use online research methods. The eventwill include a roundtable, group discussion sessions, and a networking reception where participants will[JM1] showcase their research using an A3 sized mini-poster. [NH2] [JM3] The event seeks to stimulate important debates about using online methods for social science research in the digital age including, but not limited to, the following issues: · Methodological practises, including limitations and potential · The future and past of research in the Digital Age · Leveraging social media data: biases, access, inequalities · Technical, ethical, epistemological and ontological challenges relating to social media data · Qualitative and ethnographical methods for studying social media use · Quantitative online research and big data · Recruiting participants via online platforms To apply please register at: https://innovationsmcr.wixsite.com/home/registerwhere you will be asked to submit a short statement of interest (between 200 and 300 words, focusing on how the event is relevant to your research and how you are using online methods) as well as a mini-poster plan. The mini-poster plan should be in the form of bullet points on your planned poster content, which could include the ways you have used online methods in your work, the complications you have faced or your theoretical ideas about online methods. For more information, visit: innovationsMCR.wixsite.com/home or email innovationsonline19(a)gmail.com We look forward to receiving your application and building this network with you! Registration for ELO2019
by James O'Sullivan 28 Feb '19

28 Feb '19

Dear all (and apologies for cross-posting), Registration for the 2019 Electronic Literature Organization Conference & Media Arts Festival is now open. This major international gathering of scholars and practitioners engaged with born-digital / electronic / screen literatures will be hosted at University College Cork, Ireland from July 15-17th. Registration details can be found as follows: http://elo2019.ucc.ie/registration/ ELO2019 (#ELOcork) will feature papers and panel sessions by ~150 scholars, as well as artworks and talks by a similar number of practitioners. Our keynote speakers include Astrid Ensslin, Michael Maguire, and Anne Karhio, and our excursions include a trip to the Jameson Distillery in Midleton (the real distillery, where they make *every* drop of Jameson whiskey). The theme for ELO2019 #ELOcork is “peripheries”, in that delegates are invited to explore the edges of literary and digital culture, including emerging traditions, indeterminate structures and processes, fringe communities of praxis, effaced forms and genres, marginalised bodies, and perceptual failings. We hope that some of you will consider joining us in Cork for this exploration. Best wishes, James Chair of ELO2019 PC
