It was a pleasure seeing many familiar faces, many new ones, and many who have posted to air-l (and who will hopefully post to it in the future) at last week's AoIR conference in Toronto. There are many people to thank for the success of the conference in Toronto. I could create a list that would be longer than air-l rules allow! Steve Jones Sj the longest air-l daily digest: The Infonomics Institute and its Director, Luc Soete, The Cal Company and the MECC (which I still think stands for "Monica's Excellent Conference Center"), the members of the program committee and our terrific program chair this year Klaus Bruhn Jensen, the members of the executive committee, our keynoters, Apple Computer, Sander Pomme, Herman Pijper, Sage Publications for sponsoring a refreshment break...and on and on. Nevertheless, the primary "mover and shaker" behind it was Monica Murero and she deserves all of the thanks and credit in the world, certainly far more than I can convey. It was through her hard work and dedication that the stage was literally set for the several days we were able to meet, talk, think, share, eat, in some cases dance, and for many us rarely get some sleep. The conference was splendid, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of the attendees, as well as many who were unable to attend, in addition to myself, by saying that Monica has earned her place in AoIR history. Given this, she and the others of you, whether in Maastricht or not, have assured AoIR a strong and vibrant future. Two years ago when we met for the first time at the University of Kansas it was not entirely certain that we would have another meeting. The good people at the University of Minnesota ensured that we would, and I was more than heartened by the turnout there, in the face of great unease about travel - some of which continues to this day, and if not unease about travel then unease about the prospect of war. I continue to be grateful that so many are willing to spend time away from family and other loved ones to be with colleagues and friends for some days. Spending time with one another is a gift I suspect we do not think about as much as we may have before we had the Internet and widespread use of email, but it is cherished. It is my hope that many of you will again spend some time together, with me, in Toronto, October 16 - 19, 2003. There is a productive and spirited discussion on air-meet already going on concerning planning for the conference, and I encourage you to join in if you would like (http://www.aoir.org/mailman/listinfo/air-meet) Liss Jeffrey, David Mitchell and Matthew Allen are already leading us toward another excellent gathering in a year's time. We will need reviewers for conference paper, panel, workshop, etc., proposals - I cannot stress enough how much we will need your help for that! And I encourage you to consider hosting a future conference, so I will be re-posting our Call for Hosts in a moment. It is, of course, a lot of work to host a conference, but with each one we are better able to plan and anticipate the needs. Given our rapid growth we need to be planning still further ahead, and I will look forward to our 2004, 2005 and beyond meetings,too, with great anticipation. It is on such a note of encouragement that I will end this report. AoIR has grown phenomenally, and to make it an association that you like, you need to be involved in it. If you like something about it, please work with us to make it more to your liking. If you don't like something about it, work to change it. Whatever you do, do not walk away from it - neither we, nor you, I venture, can possibly gain that way. We have a diverse group of members, and we could diversify still further, but diversification, like anything else, will not happen if we look for someone else to do it for us. Tell people you think might be interested in AoIR about us. Join in on air-meet or on a working group. Propose a working group to start a new initiative. Propose panels, papers. Post to air-l. This association sprang from the desire of a few people to do something and from the follow-up actions they took, and it can continue only if others act on their interests and desires. Get in touch with me or with other members of the executive committee at your pleasure and let us know your thoughts and interests, and your interest to volunteer.

Insights from the Journal of Industrial Ecology E-commerce and information technology (IT) have been heralded as a source of dramatic and even inevitable environmental improvement. They have also been decried as energy hogs that will force society to "dig more coal." Emerging research, published in the prestigious Journal of Industrial Ecology, (and available for free in full text at <http://mitpress.mit.edu/JIE/e-commerce>), is beginning to move expert understanding beyond opposing assertions. This complex and more nuanced understanding suggests that: - Seemingly small decisions-by consumers, manufacturers, or shipping companies-can have large effects, often shifting environmental impacts from desirable to undesirable or vice versa. For instance, the energy efficiency of using a digital library improves significantly with increasing usage of the on-line articles and declines if users must drive somewhere to gain access to the information. The greenhouse gas emission reductions from e-grocery home delivery depend highly on the choice of delivery vehicle (car, van, etc.) and fuel type. - When positive effects from IT occur, such as reductions in pollution or energy use, they often fall in the range of 5-20 percent, not the four- or five-fold improvements that some have advocated (or hoped for). - The diverse and complex use of information technologies makes unintended consequences and indirect impacts hard to predict, let alone analyze in any scientific sense. This is especially true when trying to predict how businesses and consumers might use increased time and productivity gains from the use of e-commerce and other information technology applications. These insights emerge from a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology on E-commerce, the Internet and the Environment. The Journal is a peer-reviewed international quarterly published by MIT Press and owned by Yale University. Articles in the special issue analyze the environmental consequences of telecommuting and assess the transformation of the wholesale, warehouse and retail sectors of the economy by network technology. The environmental impact of conventional and electronic approaches to grocery shopping, book selling and scholarly journals are compared and the possibility of using product tags to improve recycling is explored. The research ranges from the U.S. to Germany, from Finland to Japan. David Rejeski, Director of the Foresight and Governance Project at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. served as the guest editor for the special issue. Support for the special issue was provided by AT&T and the U.S. National Science Foundation. Hi all, A colleague of mine asked me some questions related to a specific legal case involving gay male adults and underage children in anonymous chatrooms. >Could you let me know of any research dealing with the relative fluidity >or "realism" of identity on the internet? > >Recently several adult gay men were caught in a sting operation after >entering a chat room, where they encountered a police operative >masquerading as a minor. Help with information gathering - AoIR ethical guidelines

Dear Sister and Fellow AoIR-ists: One of the great delights over the past year is to learn from the occasional conversation that yes, indeed, the AoIR guidelines are "out there" and making a difference (positive, so far as I know). E.g., * a young researcher approached her IRB to begin the process of applying for approval - and was told, without prompting, that she should be sure to look at the AoIR guidelines since her research involved online venues. (Yes, her project was approved.) * an Australian university (which shall remain nameless until I receive appropriate documentation and permission) likewise has included the AoIR guidelines in its resource database on matters ethical. And...??? (For this philosopher, two data points are good starting points towards a generalization... smile) Here's where you come in (I hope). If you're aware of the guidelines being used in some way at your institution, by a colleague you know, etc. - and if you're at liberty to say, would you mind sending me a note to that effect? My notion is to collect these sorts of listings and include them in a webpage affiliated with the ethics document. Presuming there are a good number of them, this will help other researchers who may want to use the guidelines in arguing for their particular research project's design for appropriate ethical requirements and protections - i.e., if said researcher can point out that other institutions are using the guidelines as well, it will add credibility to them and thus to his/her argument. So - if you're aware of uses of this sort and you and/or your institution are happy to have these publicly noted on a website affiliated with the document, please let me know. In the meantime, thanks - and thanks again to all the folk who made AoIR 4.0 such a delicious feast of new ideas, interesting research, and some of the most enjoyable folks I have the pleasure and honor of knowing. aoir4 follow-up: Still thinking about ethnographies?

Dear AIR colleagues, In the spirit of the amazon.com "customers who bought this book also bought...", if you liked the Lucy Suchman keynote in Toronto about ethnographies of Internet use, you may also like the following special journal issue that came out in print TODAY: "Policy, Politics, and the Local Internet" The Communication Review, Volume 6, Number 3 (2003). More details: http://research.niftyc.org/cr The basic idea behind this project is simply that the practice of public policy could be improved by considering problems of Internet policy and regulation using *ethnographic* research. (This is something that is almost never done in the policy world.) The articles here started at the conference "Ethnographies of the Internet: Grounding Regulation in Lived Experience" discussed previously on this list (http://aoir.org/pipermail/air-l/2002-April/001782.html) All of that was inspired by Daniel Miller & Don Slater's book _The Internet: An Ethnographic Approach_ which was featured prominently in Lucy's talk (and in fact Don was on the program committee for our meeting). Christine Hine -- whose _Virtual Ethnography_ was also put to good use by Lucy at AoIR 4.0 -- participated in the meeting as well. I can't claim that the meeting influenced their thinking on Internet ethnography but I know the reverse is certainly true. So, continuing this post somewhat in the genre of the amazon.com sales pitch: Editor's Review: All of these articles are about the Internet. But even better, if you read this special issue from cover-to-cover, you'll also receive (1) a Russian Tomagotchi joke (2) explanations of the secret software that political consultants use to translate Web banner ad buys into congressional votes (3) the real reason that banks in Singapore were once allowed to receive satellite TV when schools were not, and (4) a superficial discussion of automatic egg incubators in the 16th century. Most memorable informant lines include: "by 2050 a piece of software will be a [political] candidate", "scientists have proven that the Information Society is the next step in economic development", and the Internet is a big city "but we cannot not visit a city just because there are parts of it we do not like." DiGRA 2004: Call for Conference Hosts

DiGRA CALL FOR CONFERENCE HOSTS:- Digital Games Research Conference; DiGRA 2004 The Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA) has as a central goal for its organisation the support of an annual conference on digital gaming to take place at a different venue each year. This document is a call for proposals for a committee and location to host the associations second international games research conference in 2004. The inaugural conference will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on 4-6 November 2003. Institutions wishing to put themselves forward should consider the following aims of DiGRA when putting their proposal together and highlight how the event they would organise would achieve these: To support digital games research as an interdisciplinary field To encourage dialogue between researchers, practitioners, commercial organisations and policy makers To support digital gaming students and curriculum development To disseminate work produced by the associations community DiGRA is keen to receive proposals that tackle these issues in an innovative manner and build upon standard conference practices. There is no compulsory format for conference hosting proposals but is it highly recommended that they deal with the following: Venue: Location: Institution, town/City, Country. Background: What is the host city like? Attractions for visitors? Entertainment options? Location for visiting other areas before/after conference? Proximity to local game industries or other relevant sites? Venue: Description, facilities, access, lecture theatres, meeting rooms, exhibition space, etc. Accommodation: Description, university/hotel, location in relation to conference venue, facilities, etc. Conference: Programme structure Overview of themes Draft Call for Papers Type of abstracts requested and review process Potential keynote/plenary speakers Special events: Social events: What? When Where? Are they particularly digital gaming relevant or locally typical? Delegate packs: Contents. Proceedings Travel: Distance from international airport/s? Access by bus, cab, coach, train, etc Travel between conference venue and accommodation Estimated travel costs from a range of major cities Costs & Finance (in Euro and US$) Conference registration: Full & Day rates, student rates, DiGRA member rates Accommodation: Per person, room share scheme? Plan for coordination of duties within committee as well as with DiGRA executive board; estimate of deadlines for conference planning schedule. Institutional support: Level and nature of department/institution involvement and funding Additional support: Details of finance, facilities, sponsorship or other involvement from additional organisations Dates: Proposed conference dates, deadline for abstracts, etc. (It is strongly recommended that proposers avoid dates conflicting with events such as E3, GDC, GDCe, ECTS, SIGGRAPH, CHI, etc) It is recommended that proposers produce a simple business plan to estimate incoming and outgoing monies for the conference depending on different levels of attendance and financial support. Issues such as how any loss will be accounted for should be dealt with, as DiGRA cannot currently offer any financial guarantee. Procedures should be in place so that in the event that the conference makes a profit DiGRA will receive 10% of this. The association will use this towards developing funds to support conference costs for some students or researchers coming from economically unstable countries. There will be more details in the Conference License Agreement that will be signed by the representatives of the conference organiser and the association. Completed proposals or general enquires about the conference hosting call, and details of the Licence Agreement etc. should be directed to Jason Rutter (Jason.Rutter(a)man.ac.uk) or Frans Mäyrä (frans.mayra(a)uta.fi) *** Deadline for proposals is Monday, October 27, 2003. *** Finally, if you havent organised an international conference before do not underestimate the time and resources it consumes. Returned from Toronto and am still exited from all the wonderful presentations I've heard and people I met! Thanks to all for a great conference. The editors roundtable was a great success. Despite its Saturday 8:30 am scheduled time, there were about 40 people in attendance and we engaged in (at times) quite lively discussion with the four editors on the roundtable. Special thanks to the editors, who were: Steve Jones, Brian Loader, Teresa Harrison, and Sue Barnes. Next year, I will not be organizing this roundtable, but I gathered that there is continued interest in this, especially with more focus on book publishing. Once the Call for Papers comes out, I encourage all of you to take the initiative and organize an editors roundtable for 2004 in Sussex! During the discussion, I had promised to post two pieces of information to the list, so here they are.
