Employment: Research Fellowship at Curtin University

Dear all "Curtin University of Technology wishes to offer up to three prestigious Research/Teaching Fellowships to commence in 2004. This Fellowship scheme aims to attract high quality researchers with excellent potential for providing future academic leadership at the University. Appointments will involve an initial three-year Research Fellowship. Subject to performance review, Fellows may proceed to a continuing appointment after a further two-year Research/Teaching Fellowship. The principal selection criterion will be research excellence. Hello, I am currently working on my thesis for a Master of Science in digital Media and my focus is on electronic government. For this I am analysing a case in Germany where the planning process has been digitised to a high degree and I am asking, how the interactivity in such a digital environment affects aspects such as transparency, cooperation, efficiency or alienation/depersonalisation. I am distinguishing three forms of interactivity: human to human, human mediated to human and human to machine. Whereas for the first two forms I can refer to literature about computer mediated and face to face communication I still need some "food" for human to machine interaction, which is not only dealing with design issues but with implications of the increasing employment of human to machine interactions in work places. Best wishes, Jenny Sundén MATERIAL VIRTUALITIES: APPROACHING ONLINE TEXTUAL EMBODIMENT BY JENNY SUNDÉN Peter Lang Publishing, New York, 2003. What does it mean to be embodied online? What are the conditions of cybersubjectivity? In Material Virtualities, Jenny Sundén explores the rarely acknowledged borderland between typists and textual bodies, speaking and writing, and physicality and imagination in online encounters. Through careful ethnographic investigations of a text-based virtual world called WaterMOO, Sundén shows how texts, bodies, and machines are linked together in ways that demand a new understanding of the writing subject. Drawing on contemporary feminist and queers theory, she questions the opposition between disembodied, high-tech masculinity and embodied, earth-bound femininity, insisting on the need for a radical materialization of cybercultural studies that discloses the 'virtual' as itself embodied. Jenny Sundén is a researcher at INCITE (incubator for critical inquiry into technology and ethnography), Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey. She is a co-author of Digital Borderlands: Cultural Studies of Identity and Interactivity on the Internet (Peter Lang, 2002). please contact matt falloon if interested ... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- my name is matt falloon. i am a trainee journalist at city university, london, uk, currently researching the growth, background and characteristics of email community action groups. i recently came across a group in london who are of mixed demography and who have joined together in an email list to lobby local government on issues of planning and licensing as well as environmental issues and other things of community concern. although they meet up occasionally, most of the action is done by collective email. i wonder if you could point me to someone, or perhaps yourself, who could answer a couple of questions for an article i am trying to put together. 1) how common is this activity now? when did they really take off? 2) why do they work so well? 3) does the internet represent the forum for future mass political action? 4) is the internet allowing people to get into politics and voice their opinions once again and perhaps in a more proactive way then before? i hope you can help me, look forward to hearing from you, matt falloon.
