hi, from a decision making point of view herb simons concept of "bounded rationality" could fit - more so gerd gigerenzer et al. "fast and frugal" approach, which also that decision making works better with less information - take a look at Gigerenzer, G., Todd, P. M. & the ABC Research Group (1999). Simple heuristics that make us smart. New York: Oxford University Press. best michael -----Original Message----- From: air-l-aoir.org-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org on behalf of Ken Friedman Sent: Mon 04.04.2005 06:30 To: air-l-aoir.org(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-l] Research request: word search Dear Colleagues, The Danish designer and author Per Mollerup wrote me a query. He seeks a word for a specific concept to describe situations when more of something yields a worse result than fewer. One example he gives is when you water a plant just enough, it helps the plant, while giving it too much water kills it. Standards are another case in point. If you have one standard for an entire field, you are standardized. If you have twenty standards in the same field, you are less standardized.. Per also gives the example of romance. If you have one romance, it is romantic. If you have one hundred romances going on at the same time, it won't be romantic at all. IF YOU EMPHASIZE EVERY WORD ON THE PAGE, NOTHING IS EMPHASIZED. He suggests naming these phenomena with a neologism, "more-is-lessuals." I have the sense that a word may already exist to cover such cases, but I can't recall it. If anyone knows of such a word, I will welcome a note at <ken.friedman(a)bi.no> Thank you. -- Ken Friedman Professor of Leadership and Strategic Design Department of Leadership and Organization Norwegian School of Management Design Research Center Denmark's Design School +47 06600 Tlf NSM +47 67.55.73.23 Tlf Office +47 33.40.10.95 Tlf Privat email: ken.friedman(a)bi.no _______________________________________________ The Air-l-aoir.org(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/

Check out the Stanford Humanities Lab (http://www.stanford.edu/group/shl/index.shtml) Lots of activity there. Starting with the Media-X list is a good lead-in to programs in departments at Stanford. Symbolic Systems, where I work, doesn't have a doctoral program but may be opening up our master's program to outside applicants next year. Right now we restrict admission to Stanford undergraduates. I look forward to seeing you at the Online Deliberation conference. For the rest of you, the accepted submissions are now visible by clicking on the papers link at online-deliberation.net. We'll announce more about the program, including featured sessions and a schedule, soon. Annotation webtools
by Eilean Fairholme 02 Apr '05

Yesterday's mail regarding the History Flow Visualisation tool has prompted me to ask list members for any updates they might be able to provide to this list of Web Annotation Technologies (Garfunkel, 1999): CritLink Web4Groups ThirdVoice RichLink Annotated XML YAWAS PageSeeder IPP Slashdot ComMentor Then of course there is D3E (http://d3e.sourceforge.net/) and also Webbed Footnotes, recently featured on this list (http://web.media.mit.edu/~golder/projects/webbedfootnotes/) I am interested in any additions/deletions, experience in use etc., and suggest offlist responses which I will collate for the list later. N.B. I have not included Wikis at this stage, as I think they deserve to be a separate topic. Also, collaborative authoring tools are not part of this request, although I am interested in hearing of any experience, again offlist. Eilean Fairholme Ph.D. Student Curtin University of Technology

Cyberstudies/internet studies/online community studies grad programs
by Kate Raynes-Goldie 01 Apr '05

I'm currently shopping around for grad programs where I can do internet studies, specifically on social norms and the relationship between online and offline communities. I'm looking to do this from a humanities perspective, perhaps in communications. I'm going to be at Stanford to present at the Online Deliberation conference in May, so while I'm there I'd like to check out what kind of research is going on there and see if it might be a good place for me. Do you folks have any suggestions on who I should talk to or projects I should look into while I'm there? I looked at the MediaX site and the metamedia lab so far but haven't had much luck finding exactly what I'm looking for... Thanks! Kate

3 new papers on freesoftware|opensource.mit.edu
by Karim R. Lakhani 31 Mar '05

31 Mar '05

<sorry for any x-posting> Hi All, Please find details below on the following three papers. Many thanks to all the authors for their contributions. Please do provide them with feedback. Thanks Karim Paper 1 Lin, Yuwei Title: Gender issues in the FLOSS development http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/lin3_gender.pdf The FLOSS development is responding to the ICT development in various ways. This essay describes and analyses challenges (societal and organisational) and advantages (e.g. new models for mobile and collaborative work online), particularly regarding gender issues, encountered in the recent FLOSS development. The focus of the essay is not only on the claims made women in the existed FLOSS community about the tensions between male and female developers' interests and ways of doings, but also on the current obstacles against bringing more women, who are not technically competent, to participate in the FLOSS development. This paper concludes with suggestions on how to create rules and resources and the creation of a common FLOSS space for both genders. Paper 2 Author: Tuomi, Ilkka Title: The Future of Open Source http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/tuomi3_bookchapter.pdf Abstract: Open source has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. In many ways, it has been a great success story. Yet it is interesting to study the conditions that would enable the open-source movement to remain viable and thrive also in the future. This chapter explores the driving forces behind the open source model and its constraints, discussing both the factors likely to promote the continuous growth of the open-source movement and those that could lead to its downfall. Paper 3 Author: Klang, Mathias Title: Free software and open source: The freedom debate and its consequences http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html Abstract: To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the development of the concept of freedom. -- Karim R.
