He seeks a word for a specific concept to describe situations when more of something yields a worse result than fewer. One example he gives is when you water a plant just enough, it helps the plant, while giving it too much water kills it. Standards are another case in point. If you have one standard for an entire field, you are standardized. If you have twenty standards in the same field, you are less standardized.. Per also gives the example of romance. If you have one romance, it is romantic. If you have one hundred romances going on at the same time, it won't be romantic at all. IF YOU EMPHASIZE EVERY WORD ON THE PAGE, NOTHING IS EMPHASIZED. He suggests naming these phenomena with a neologism, "more-is-lessuals." I have the sense that a word may already exist to cover such cases, but I can't recall it. Consequently there is an urgent need to understand the technology perspective along with the pragmatic applications of it and to explore the potential of different types of knowledge that it may yield. In this context, synthesis on contents from computer science and theoretical physics to information science, communication studies and entomology need to be revisited with nascent eyes, focusing development of common people the majority of the global community. With a concrete plan of action, focusing streamlined activities can assist any country in building a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented information society. Therefore, management of information and knowledge is of prime importance in the development of masses in the context of economic and regional development. The Overall Objective of the Book The role of ICT in rural development can be extremely crucial. ICT provides the technology for connectivity, but connectivity without content is futile. ICT application related to information management can become an integral part of the overall strategy for development. Fostering partnership among government, civil society, the private sector and other development partners can effectively address economic and social divides. Creation of development anticipation through information and knowledge reiterates proper scientific research and management. Knowledge is a concept, wherein stakeholders contribute to it by ways of information sharing among retrospective domains. Resources eradicate poverty, knowledge empowers them and ICT plays a major role in bridging the gap between these two. A book focusing on management of information and knowledge utilizing technological and applied science for the development of rural communities can feed the society as a knowledge tool and guideline. The Target Audience The target audience of this book includes professionals and researchers working in the field of information networking and knowledge management in various disciplines such as information and communication sciences, education, adult education, computer science, and information technology. This book will be a useful collection in community libraries, public libraries, research organizations and academic institutes' libraries. Moreover, the book can act as a guideline for agencies and organizations that like to utilize ICT for delivering local-specific, demand-driven information to enhance grass-root development. Check out the Stanford Humanities Lab (http://www.stanford.edu/group/shl/index.shtml) Lots of activity there. Starting with the Media-X list is a good lead-in to programs in departments at Stanford. Symbolic Systems, where I work, doesn't have a doctoral program but may be opening up our master's program to outside applicants next year. Right now we restrict admission to Stanford undergraduates. I'm currently shopping around for grad programs where I can do internet studies, specifically on social norms and the relationship between online and offline communities. I'm looking to do this from a humanities perspective, perhaps in communications. I'm going to be at Stanford to present at the Online Deliberation conference in May, so while I'm there I'd like to check out what kind of research is going on there and see if it might be a good place for me. Do you folks have any suggestions on who I should talk to or projects I should look into while I'm there? I looked at the MediaX site and the metamedia lab so far but haven't had much luck finding exactly what I'm looking for... Thanks! Kate

Thanks Karim Paper 1 Lin, Yuwei Title: Gender issues in the FLOSS development http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/lin3_gender.pdf The FLOSS development is responding to the ICT development in various ways. This essay describes and analyses challenges (societal and organisational) and advantages (e.g. new models for mobile and collaborative work online), particularly regarding gender issues, encountered in the recent FLOSS development. The focus of the essay is not only on the claims made women in the existed FLOSS community about the tensions between male and female developers' interests and ways of doings, but also on the current obstacles against bringing more women, who are not technically competent, to participate in the FLOSS development. This paper concludes with suggestions on how to create rules and resources and the creation of a common FLOSS space for both genders. Paper 3 Author: Klang, Mathias Title: Free software and open source: The freedom debate and its consequences http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html Abstract: To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole.
