Interesting suggestion, but unclear what the point may be. Copyright liability is strict in the U.S. and other jurisditions with which I am familiar; for liability to attach it doesn't really matter whether you engaged in good faith efforts to find the copyright holder or not. In the U.S., once you've lost an infringement suit, I suppose that the paper trail might allow you to avoid an increased damage award for willful infringement under the 504(c)(2) statutory damages provision. But at the same time it suggests that you knew or should have known the material was protected by copyright, so that you coudn't raise the 504(c) "innocent infringer" defense to get lowered damages. In fact, it may be that the paper trail *demonstrates* that the infringement was willful. So this practice appears to cut both ways, not necessarily to your advantage. DLB P.S. Disclaimer again. Heilesen and Sisse Siggaard Jensen, Roskilde University, Denmark. INTRODUCTION Designing for Networked Communications is to be a book about how we plan, use and understand the products and the dynamic social processes or tasks upon which depend some of the most vital innovations - social as well as technological - in the knowledge society. Networked communication is proliferating. To-day, not only are existing mediated forms of communication being remediated in electronic form, but also hitherto direct forms of communication in complicated social settings are being supplemented or even replaced by computer mediated communication (CMC). We are coming to depend on CMC-products. As a result, the way they function and the way we use them inevitably influences or even determines how we communicate and how we think about communication. Designing products for CMC may be seen as a cycle, where tasks require the creation of artefacts, and where artefacts condition modifications of tasks. The tasks that we wish to examine are processes of communication between individuals by means of computer networks (within and across organizations) as well as the dissemination of information from a sender to a target group. The artefacts include physical networks, hardware, software as well as the manipulation of symbols in the act of communicating. Designing is to be understood in a broad sense as (1) the underlying scheme for the planning, functioning and development of an artefact, (2) the actual arrangement and functionality of various elements of the artefact, (3) the development of strategies and adaptations required for performing tasks by means of the artefact in the given social context and subject to certain basic conditions, and (4) the development of creative strategies for social innovation and the identification of new tasks to be performed by means of a redesign of existing artefacts or with new artefacts. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK The book is meant to further our understanding of ICT-design processes by identifying strategies employed both by developers and users in the dynamic processes of creating and using artefacts. The various chapters will present and reflect on relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area. Bridging the fields of HCI-design in Computer Science and Computer-mediated Communication in Communication Studies, the book will represent an interdisciplinary approach that is valuable for stimulating unconventional thinking and a creative exchange in and across two important academic and professional fields. THE TARGET AUDIENCE Professionals, researchers and students working in the fields of Communication, Computer Science (in particular HCI and system development), E-learning and Computer Supported Collaborative Work. RECOMMENDED TOPICS include but are not limited to the following - Theories and models of designing, - Overall strategies and methodologies, - Creative and/or sense making strategies and methodologies, - Social innovation strategies and methodologies, - Negotiation of meaning and collaboration, - Learning strategies and environments, - Organizational learning and learning cultures, - Organizational games and role plays, - Problem solving and decision making, - Workplace communication, - Distributed organizations/ workplaces, - Team work and team building, - Project management and leadership, - Knowledge sharing and knowledge management, - General communication for stationary and mobile users, - Dissemination of information and information searching, - E-publishing and Web-publishing. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 30, 2005, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by May 31, 2005 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 31, 2005. All submitted chapters will be reviewed by at least two reviewers on a blind review basis. has anyone done any research on the habbo.com phenomenon or others like it? It is a "safe site" for kids 13-18 years old where they create avatar characters and rooms for them, play games and chat. If anyone has information about other sites like this (I'm currently looking into yub.com) or any information about articles on social networking that take place in these kinds of spaces, I would love to hear it. I could probably also use references that survey children's computer use and studies of gendered behavior online. thank you all so much for this great list. SWG and user rebellion

I'm not certain if anyone is aware of this but it occured to me an interesting case study is happening with the MMPORG Star Wars Galaxies. A significant change to the game was released yesterday/today and is the subject of alot of discussion on the forums sponsored by Sony Online that support the game. Petitions have been started, canceled accounts, etc. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting event and thought someone might be interested in it from several possible angles, including social networks online, PR, and a few other orientations. Sure, I use FreeMind and (previously) MindManager quite a bit. One way I use them is for literature reviews - to keep track of major subjects and articles. See http://groupblog.workasone.net/archives/2004/12/literature-searching-and-ma… Another is to organise my thinking around particular topics - but normally only at an early stage. I got started into mindmaps by reading Tony Buzan's original book on the subject, called Use Your Head -- he's written many since but to my mind this one is still the most interesting. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0563208112/qid=1114698278/sr=…. The reviewers for Amazon, I note, hate it. It bears more looking into, but I have found it useful. Freemind is a good and free program. So I like that. Haven't used or heard of ZigZag before. IR conference reviewing complete

We have completed the review of the paper for the IR 6.0 conference. If you have submitted a paper, panel, roundtable or workshop, you should have received an email by now with an acceptance or rejection. We received around 325 single paper submissions of which we have accepted approximately 220 papers. In addition we have accepted 17 multi-paper panels, 7 roundtables, and 6 workshops (half and full-day). Acceptances were based on the reviews submitted by the team of reviewers -- thanks all for a job well done! We determined acceptance by sorting the papers by the recommendations given by reviewers. Recommendations were "Accept", "Probably Accept", "Probably Reject", "Reject". We sorted the papers to determine a top set with an automatic acceptance, and a comparable set with an unequivocal rejection. This left, of course, a set with mixed reviews. We made our way through the middle range reviewing papers and reviews of the papers to make final decisions. In general, of papers accepted, the recommendations toward acceptance will have outweighed those toward rejection. Now, the task of organizing who talks when! Looking forward to seeing lots of you at the conference in October. Tamara, I have used SurveyMonkey (www.surveymonkey.com) I found it to be very easy and user-friendly and does everything you are asking for; I think it cost about 20/ month. For up to 10 questions and fewer than 100 respondents, it's free, so you can try it out for a smaller project. What was nice about it was that all your data stay there even when you discontinue paying the monthly fee. You can decide to restart your account any time.
