I'm writing up a lit review, and am talking about ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in one section. Two questions I can't seem to find the answer to that I would greatly appreciate the group's help on: 1. What is the original source of this term? 2. Is there a source for what are the defining characteristics of ICTs? Has someone written on this? I can find tons of people using the term (always uncited), but can't seem to find a source that critically unpacks it. Thanks, Eric Eric T. Reminder: CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2005 A student award competition Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch’s theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, IA, chair Dr. Katherine M. Clegg Smith, Johns Hopkins University Dr. Lori Kendall, SUNY-Purchase, New York Dr. Jodi O'Brien, Seattle University Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2005 International Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300, runner up will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $200, and a third paper will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $100. Progress with the IR conference

Just to keep you all up to date on the progress of reviewing proposals for IR 6.0. We have now received all the reviews. At this time we -- me and my two trusty assistants Anna Nielsen, and Ingbert Floyd -- are sorting, sifting, and counting to determine the accepted papers, panels, roundtables, and workshops. This will take us a bit of time, but we fully expect to send notices about proposals by the end of April. Japanese characters

When I copy and paste the Japanese characters to the HTML code the ftp program that I use to transfer files (Cute FTP) displays only question marks. Any suggestions how I can solve this? Unit of analysis

Hi. As my literature review has progressed, I am sort of surprised of the fact that not many people touched on a basic issue in content analysis. As you know, the Internet is a different medium from traditional mass media, which have distinctive unit of analysis. Considering the web sites are interconnected with other web sites through hyperlinks, how can we determine the appropriate unit of analysis in analyzing web content? Traditional mass media have ultimate control over the exposure of content but the Internet allows users to extend the content. If we calculate the amount of content consumed by individual users, the actual amount of content available to the individual users surely exceeds ones carried by the individual web pages the users initially visit. My question is what is appropriate unit of analysis in web content analysis if we want to reflect the actual content available to the individual users. I hope I make myself clear here. It's a well-known problem and has been addressed by those working in virtual research methods. I would start by taking a very long look at this paper: Howard, Philip N. Special Issue Call for Papers: "Minority languages, multimedia and the Web" Submission deadline: April 30, 2005 For The New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia, 2005 (2) Guest Editors: Daniel Cunliffe, University of Glamorgan, UK (djcunlif(a)glam.ac.uk) Susan Herring, Indiana University, USA (herring(a)indiana.edu) Information and communications technology, and in particular the World Wide Web, can be a double-edged sword as regards the maintenance and revitalisation of minority languages. On the one hand, minority language communities can be active shapers of these technologies, creating their own tools, adapting existing tools to local needs, and creating culturally authentic, indigenous electronic media. On the other hand, these technologies can be seen as a force for globalisation and neo-colonisation, reinforcing the existing dominance of majority languages and breaking down geographical boundaries that in the past may have protected minority language groups. Researching the effects of multimedia and the Web on minority languages is challenging, and it is not yet clear how best to utilise these technologies to maintain and revitalise minority languages. This special issue invites researchers and practitioners who are actively engaged in addressing these issues from practical or theoretical viewpoints to share their findings and experiences and to contribute to a platform for future research. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: Minority language applications: * designing, implementing and evaluating applications * measuring the impact of applications on language use * promoting indigenous production and participatory design Influence of ICTs on minority languages: * adaptation of languages to online environments, e.g., Romanisation * behaviour of minority language speakers in online environments Measuring online minority languages: * quantitative and qualitative measurement of online presence and use * content related analysis of online presence and use Strategic issues: * understanding barriers to online minority language use * integrating multimedia and the Web into language planning Article submissions should typically be no longer than 7,000 words (excluding references) and should follow the formatting guidelines in the Instructions to Authors on the NRHM web site (www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13614568.asp) Submissions should be sent by email to the Guest Editors, in Word, rtf or pdf format.
