These are college juniors I'm reporting on here, but we had a discussion about facebook just recently in my class and a number of my students have reported negative consequences of revealing information in facebook, such as getting a real-life stalker. It was pretty clear that to my students (at least those that spoke up) the use of social internet spaces was clearly determined by how they think of the internet. So, perception would even be a determinant of action. Also, my students still report that the quality of online socializing is overall less than offline (with a few exceptions of students reporting no difference). These are not study results, but maybe can serve as indicators. Ulla Bunz

Louise: In my research I noticed the trend in 2004 in the U.S. when the industry began its lawsuits through the RIAA and the MPAA, and simultaneously the industry also began a public education campaign in schools. Despite their numbers and the lawsuits, the "alleged pirates" appear to be winning because of the industry's greed. No better authority than Steve Jobs of Apple Computers stated that people would begin piracy on a much larger scale if the music industry keeps pushing Apple to raise its prices. This is why other outlets like Google, Comcast and the telecomm companies have prices that sometimes are higher than iTunes. I am waiting for the first lawsuit that is filed in the U.S. against digital rights management. In my job as a film producer and Internet content manager I have have multiple digital devices just to listen to music that I have already purchased. The operative question becomes when do you really own a cd or dvd? How can you own some property and the seller is still dictating how you can legally use the product even though you are usin the product in a manner in which it is designed to be used? Apple appears to have it right because they are at least allowing you to own digital property without monthly fees; however, the DRM that Apple utilizes, Fairplay, prevents one from lawfully transferring one's music to other formats. The other content providers such as Napster want consumers to pay rent or else they face losing their libraries. Unfortunately, the industry will have to learn as Sony did during the Beta vs. Vhs videotape wars of the 1980's. I am against real piracy of intellectual property; however, I am equally against the propaganda being spouted or insinuated by the industry that one must pay to download content and that if one does not: one is a thief. The SonyBetamax case is being worked around by new consumer sounding laws like the Digital Content Protection Act of 2006, the Digital Milennium Copyright Act and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The problem in the U.S. is our legal system which allows lobbyists more access to politicians and regulatory officials than corporate interests. Ordinary citizens cannot compete with legal lobbying dollars. These, off course, put forward only the industry's line. The next generation is effectively being brainwashed. I feel the recent launch of citizens' digital rights pressure groups in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and Canada, all within months of each other, is no coincidence. Dear colleagues I am a senior lecturer in midwifery, midwife and PhD student enrolled at the Centre of Online Health, University of Queensland, Brisbane. I am developing an e-mail mentoring system for new graduate midwives. Are there anyone involved in similar clinical or education work ie carrying out things like critical reflection and debriefing especially in the health field. I would be thrilled to talk to anyone interested in this area or carrying similar work, either on or off list. need digital video editing help ASAP

Dear Colleagues, We're offering a short/intensive course called "Digital Video Editing" here at the University of the Virgin Islands. The professor I hired for the course just had a hospital emergency, and will not be able to teach the course. I need to either cancel the course OR find a Visiting Professor for this brief opportunity. Is there anyone out there who can: 1) Teach digital video editing from March 7-11, 2006 (yes, that's next week!) 2) Fly free round trip to the Virgin Islands 3) Stay free in faculty housing on campus, with a balcony overlooking the beach Here are some of the qualifiers for the Visiting Professor: We prefer someone with a PhD in Communication or a related field who has taught a course like this before, but significant experience in digital video editing, particularly using Adobe Premiere, will substitute for a graduate degree. How does the class work? Students on two islands meet in a videoconferenced lab for class. Class meets March 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (with a one hour break). Students completing projects must be able to contact the professor via email or phone from March 11- April 11 to get additional advice and guidance. What are the Benefits, besides a free trip to the Caribbean? Remuneration for the course is approximately $1,700 and lodging, plus airfare and reimbursment for airport transportation, taxis, and meals. Caveat: At this short notice, we are limited in our ability to fly someone here from huge distances, like Australia. So the decision is somewhat determined by flight prices, unless the Visiting Professor wanted to pay for part of his or her airfare....all things are possible. If you want to make this a mini-vacation, it's also optional to extend your stay in the faculty apartment until March 14th. Jeremy: Can you provide a url link to John Logie's paper? I am conducting research on edutainment and convergence and this issue is becoming a propaganda battle between the companies who can lobby and persuade lawmakers and the consumers who value fair use. This is beginning to look like total capitalism which is different from the old style of capitalism. Globalism has seemed to bring out the worst in too many businesses. Here is a revolutionary idea. Provide a good product inexpensively and you will not have to worry about illegal activity. Hence, the reason iTunes has over a billion downloads in just a few years and WalMart is the king of the retailing world. I am not saying that these institutions are perfect but they seem to get it when it comes to their customers more often than not. Suing your customers is simply mistreating your customers and if the music industry is not careful they may create competitors on the web who outsell them in ten years and who refuse to sell their businesses. This piece really hits home that the industry has conducted a highly successful and effective anti-piracy communications campaign. FINAL CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Doctoral Consortium in Information Studies at Connections 2006 Syracuse University School of Information Studies Syracuse, NY May 19-21 (info site) http://connections2006.syr.edu/consortium.htm (submission site) http://floss.syr.edu:8008/ocs/submit.php?cf=1 PhD students in information studies (including LIS, IS, MIS and information policy programs) are invited to submit applications for the Connections 2006 Doctoral Consortium. The consortium offers an opportunity for Ph.D. students making progress on their dissertation research to share and discuss their research with peers and faculty mentors. It will include multiple concurrent small group sessions facilitated by experienced faculty members with expertise in the topic area or methodological approach. In addition, there will be opportunities to network with peers and faculty, learn about research and publishing strategies, and engage in discussions on research, teaching, jobs, and careers. As the purpose of the Doctoral Consortium is to share and get feedback on research, it is most useful for students who have defended a proposal (or are close to doing so). The consortium will be held on Friday 19 May 2006 as a pre-conference activity in conjunction with Connections 2006 (19-21 May 2006), at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, in Syracuse, NY. Accepted participants will be expected to arrive in Syracuse by 6 pm on Thursday 18 May 2006. A get-acquainted event will take place at 7 pm. SCMC transcription suggestions.

Hi all, I'm working on a transcription system for transcribing conversations held through instant messages (specifically, through AIM)- it's based loosely off of the system used in Garcia and Jacobs 1999 for chatroom data. I'm interested specifically in doing micro-analyses of the talk, so using logfiles obtained through the program as data just aren't cutting it. One of my problems is recording silences in between utterances, since I'm aiming towards measuring them in tenths of a second, and the only transcription software I'm aware of can only measure gaps this closely from an audio file. All obvious lack of sound aside, I'm transcribing directly from a quicktime video file of the interaction. Is anyone aware of a transcription program that can precisely measure silences straight from a video file? Additionally, any other known examples from books or articles of non-logfile transcription systems for synchronous CMC would be appreciated.
