I'm unaware of a sufficient term for SMS shorthand (including common sets of abbreviations, dropped vowels, letters for numbers, systems of substitution, etc.) Thinking of "ebonics", I've invented "SMSics" (ess'-im ESS'-icks). It rolls off the tongue nicely. It sounds a bit sexy in potential paper titles ("The Evolution of SMSics"; "The Cultural Politics of Hegemonic SMSics", "Unicultural SMSics in a Multicultural World"; "Sex Effects and SMSics") And I could hear someone @ CNN stumbling over the teleprompted text the first time they see it, but being proud to say it correctly half an hour later, after getting producer input during the commercial break. :) Like it? -eg

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on Generating Collaborative Research in the Ethical Design of Surveillance Infrastructures June 8-11, 2006; Austin, Texas Surveillance may be understood as a set of processes of identification, tracking, analysis and response which organize social knowledge, social relations, and social power. Surveillance mediates everyday life. For example, internet "cookies," shopping loyalty cards, and mobile phone numbers all individuate and identify us. These identifiers are used to index databases recording our web surfing activities, our purchases, and our movements. The databases are subjected to statistical analysis in order to produce knowledge of demographic categories, typical patterns, or suspect behavior. This knowledge is then applied back to individuals in the population in order to assign each to a particular niche market or risk group, and to act toward them accordingly. Thus, through surveillance, knowledge is created, categories and types are produced, individuals are assigned social identities, and actions are taken that articulate those identities within a larger social order. These surveillance practices are themselves shaped by overlapping and intertwined technical systems, laws, institutional configurations, and cultural understandings. This "infrastructure" of surveillance supports patterns of access to the resources of knowledge production, social visibility, and social position. In June 2006 a three-day workshop will be held in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the meeting is to generate collaborative research projects exploring further * the social implications of surveillance practice, * the technological, legal, economic, and cultural infrastructures that shape surveillance practice, and * possible technological, legal, economic, or cultural interventions to reshape those infrastructures to desired ends. The workshop will address this issue in the context of the following themes: * If surveillance mediates the production of categories and types of people, how can surveillance infrastructures be shaped to permit individuals, and groups of individuals, to coalesce around a particular identity? * How can surveillance infrastructures mediate the ability of groups and individuals to "perform" certain identities within certain contexts? * How can surveillance infrastructures mediate the ability of subcultures to generate and sustain knowledge of and for themselves? * How can surveillance resources be appropriately allocated to ensure that groups of many scales (the family, the subculture, the nation) are able to defend, protect, and nurture their own (perhaps conflicting) interests? We seek participants whose interests and expertise complement and expand upon each other's work in social theory, information system design, business, and public policy, and who will be able to address issues such as: * the application of legal paradigms other than privacy to practices of information collection. We are particularly interested explorations of legal theories of cultural rights and information commons. * the application of novel information processing techniques, including, but not limited to, pseudonymity, digital rights management, and cluster analysis. * the application of social theories of identity, including queer theory and performance studies. * the intersection of market interests with ethical surveillance practice. The workshop is intended to provide the initial venue for the production of fundable, collaborative, cross-disciplinary research proposals. Participants will be expected to prepare a position paper for distribution one month prior to the meeting. At the workshop itself, we will identify synergistic interactions of expertise, fruitful research directions, and possible sources of funding. After the workshop, participants will be eligible to apply for seed money grants to complete collaborative grant proposals to pursue those projects. Participants will also be invited to contribute to an edited volume. The project will provide meals and accommodation for workshop participants, and will reimburse reasonable travel costs. Please include a quote of lowest available airfare in your application. Participants from outside the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply. FYI. ------ Postdoctoral Research Associate Annenberg Center for Communication University of Southern California The Annenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California invites applications for a postdoctoral research position, sponsored by a grant from the MacArthur Foundation. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for one more year. The postdoctoral researcher will work as fieldworker/ethnographer on a project on “digital kids” and informal learning, which involves foundational research on how children and youth are using information and communication technologies and participating on the Internet. At USC, the project is led by Mizuko Ito, and is part of a broader project involving Peter Lyman and Diane Harley at UC Berkeley, and Michael Carter at the Monterey Institute of Technology and Education. Responsibilities would involve monitoring and participating in online activity and conducting interviews with kids and parents The researcher would also be responsible for analyzing, writing, and presenting results, and considering policy and design implications of the ethnographic research. We seek candidates with backgrounds in fields such as science and technology studies, information sciences, communications, education, anthropology, and sociology with interest in areas related to new media, education, and childhood studies. The ideal candidate would have experience in ethnographic fieldwork, collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and experience working with kids and families. The position will be full time, with a yearly salary of $45,000 plus benefits, and researcher will be expected to be in residence in the Los Angeles area. Research training residential workshops *Free places available for doctoral students* Quantitative methods for Internet Research: workshop with Mike Thelwall 6-8th April 2006, University of Wales Aberystwyth, UK The Department of Information Studies at Aberystwyth is pleased to announce the first in a series of training workshops and seminars aimed at research students involved in researching Internet use, or using the Internet as a tool in their research. Professor Mike Thelwall, is based at the University of Wolverhampton, and is a leading researcher in web bibliometrics and link analysis (Webometrics). He has published extensively in these areas. He will introduce students to research techniques for investigating Internet use, including link analysis and blog analysis. Attendees will be shown how to take advantage of existing online data sources and will also be introduced to new specialist research software. This is an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) -funded workshop series which aims to acquaint doctoral researchers with some of the many ways that the Internet can be used both as a research tool and as a subject of research itself. PhD students at ANY stage of their research are invited to attend the intention is to provide training, facilitate discussion and allow research students from the various Information Studies and Information Systems departments in the UK to meet and forge links in an informal environment. Students or early career researchers with an interest in any aspect of qualitative or quantitative methodologies are welcome. The AHRC encourages doctoral students to undertake research training throughout their PhD. As such the intention of these workshops is to provide research skills that are both transferable and of immediate applicability for new researchers. The series is funded with provision from the AHRC to support collaborative research training for doctoral students. Attendance at the workshop is FREE of charge for doctoral students, including accommodation and meals, but places are limited. Under the terms of the programme, priority will be given to AHRC-funded students but all interested students are encouraged to apply. Attendees will asked to prepare a 5-10 minute presentation of their current research (or a poster presentation), in order to facilitate small-group discussion and exchange of ideas. The programme is intended to complement any research training that students undertake at their home institution and as such certificates of attendance will be provided for all attendees. Development of AoIR website

Dear all now that some other pressing matters have passed, there's been some time to work on the AoIR website. It's still very much a work in progress, but we hope that the site is now somewhat more orderly and accessible. The transition from the old site to the new site has involved more work than expected (spread over more than a year!); our thanks to all those who so ably made that transition (especially Charlie, Jeremy, Radhika and Ulla). There are three important things now for you to do First - check out the revised menu system and front page. Second- if you are an AoIR member, you should login! If you have forgotten your password then you can get another by email. If you have forgotten your username then.... email ME and I will see what I can do (it might 3-4 weeks). Third - if you login, you can start to add content...have a look at the way the system works; try some things out (we can always delete mistakes). Focus in particular on either a) 'current content' - discussion posts etc or b) adding more permanent material. Call for chapters: Researching communities with community participation

Researching communities with community participation An edited book that presents personal but grounded perspectives on engaging communities to undertake research within them in ways that promote and privilege the voice of the community, is respectful of local or indigenous practices and is culturally safe. Community informatics is a praxis-based discipline concerned with the social appropriation of technology. As such research, in this context is often applied and qualitative in nature. It is, like the project being examined, embedded in the community and at its best provides useful and usable results for a range of stakeholders, including the community itself, funding agencies, developers of policy and other practitioners. Claims are often made that such research is a partnership but in reality, our time in a community is often limited and, unless we are also a part of that community, we are unlikely to be directly affected by the project. This book positions researchers as guests, hopefully invited in, sometimes simply 'parachuted' in by a government agency or NGO as part of a contractual obligation to evaluate. How then are we as researchers to achieve a balance between all the stakeholders? How are we to ensure that the voice of the community is heard, not simply in the research but in the design of the research and the application of outcomes. Our focus is on the impact of the project on people and the potential for engagement and change. Every community is different and so each project must reflect that and so must our research. Whilst these issues apply to any community, they can often be more significant for researchers working with marginalized groups and with indigenous peoples. Objectives A resource for researchers wanting to engage in community-centric research and community practitioners wanting to learn more about collaborative research. This book will provide a practical but rigorously grounded resource that describes applied, community-based research through the narrative and exemplars of researchers and the communities themselves. Audience * Academic Researchers * Community activists and practitioners * Post-graduate students * Commercial researchers and evaluators * Government agencies and policy developers * Anyone wishing to work effectively with communities Call for Chapters Contributions are sought for this book in two formats: 1) Researcher perspective Chapters of between 3000 - 5000 words that provide an overview of a project and community, please include personal reflection and reflexive commentaries on the process and lessons learned. Since the book is targeted at researchers, literature should be used to support arguments where appropriate, however, it is not intended to be a dense or overly academic publication. These submissions will be peer reviewed before acceptance. 2) Community perspective Short vignettes (1000-2000 words) are sought from community practitioners describing their experiences of research in their communities. Both positive and negative stories are sought, however each chapter should provide a summary of learning experiences and recommendations for future projects. These submissions will be editorially reviewed before acceptance. Physically dispersed and marginalized people (re)find themselves online for the sake of sustaining and extending community. International and interdisciplinary teams now collaborate in new ways. Diverse cultures engage one another via CMC. These technologies relocate and refocus capital, labor and immigration, and they open up new possibilities for political, potentially democratizing, forms of discourse. Moreover, these technologies themselves converge in multiple ways, e.g. in Internet-enabled mobile phones, in Internet-based telephony, and in computers themselves as "digital appliances" that conjoin communication and multiple media forms. These technologies also facilitate fragmentations with greater disparities between the information-haves and have-nots, between winners and losers in the shifting labor and capital markets, and between individuals and communities. Additionally these technologies facilitate information filtering that reinforces, rather than dialogically challenges, narrow and extreme views. CALL FOR PAPERS Our conference theme invites papers and presentations based on empirical research, theoretical analysis and everything in between that explore the multiple ways the Internet acts in both converging and fragmenting ways - physical, cultural, technological, political, social - on local, regional, and global scales. Without limiting possible proposals, topics of interest include: - Theoretical and practical models of the Internet - Internet convergence, divergence and fragmentation - Networked flows of information, capital, labor, etc. - Migrations and diasporas online - Identity, community and global communication - Regulation and control (national and global) - Internet-based development and other economic issues - Digital art and aesthetics - Games and gaming on the Internet - The Net generation - E-Sectors, e.g. e-health, e-education, e-business We call for papers, panel proposals, and presentations from any discipline, methodology, and community that address the theme of Internet Convergence. We particularly call for innovative, exciting, and unexpected takes on and interrogations of the conference theme. However, we always welcome submissions on any topics that address social, cultural, political, economic, and/or aesthetic aspects of the Internet and related Internet technologies. We are equally interested in interdisciplinary proposals as well as proposals from within specific disciplines. SUBMISSIONS We seek proposals for several different kinds of contributions. We welcome proposals for traditional academic conference papers, but we also encourage proposals for creative or aesthetic presentations that are distinct from a traditional written 'paper'. We welcome proposals for roundtable sessions that will focus on discussion and interaction among conference delegates, and we also welcome organized panel proposals that present a coherent group of papers on a single theme.
