Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. LOL. I am amused by the idea that supporting AUT would be political but opposing them is OK because it is non-political. This is doubleplusungood doublethink isn't it. FWIW I support AUT.There is an advert on British TV to encourage people to vote It says "If you don't do politics, you don't do anything." and suggests that if you are interested in the world around you then you are de facto interested in politics. I favour a boycott of Israel, not because of its effect of otherwise on the brutal oppression of the Palestinians but because we do not have to be accomplices in that brutal oppression and a boycott is a non-violent civilised way to express that. You have only to listen to the intemperate language with which the Israeli right has responded - rejecting AUT as irrelevant and in the same breath denouncing them as terrorists - to see that it is having an effect. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Internet adoption rates by country and age: data sources?

Hello all, I'm looking for internet adoption rates on a national basis, breaking out adoption patterns by age. Any suggestions as to where to find these data would be most appreciated. I don't have a specific list of countries I'm interested in, at this point I'm just trying to see what is available. I am aware of the OECD and ITU internet adoption data, but as far as I know neither provides a breakdown by age of adopter. For anyone interested in this in the Canadian context, these data are found in the Household Internet Use survey, conducted by Statistics Canada from 1997-2003. teens and myspace

I have a question for those of you working with youth culture, particularly but not just around MySpace. I have been interested recently by what I perceive as a gap between the ways in which most of us *use* the internet socially (ie, often without big issues about it) and the way we *think* about using the internet socially (ie, a poor substitute for more meaningful face-to-face interaction). Recently a number of adults have said to me that this gap between action and perception, which they acknowledge in themselves, is completely gone with teens, what with myspace and all. My question is whether youth really perceive their online communication to be completely non-problematic compared to face-to-face communication, or if even amongst teens there is a sense that it might be a little pathetic or embarrassing to use the internet socially (even amongst those who do). Is the stigma around online socializing really completely gone for youth? Of course, adults always perceive kids as way better and more comfortable with the net than they are, which makes me wonder if this sense that kids have no sense of stigma is adult perception vs youth reality. Recent discussion of the legality (or otherwise) of downloading audio reminded me of a recent news story here in the UK about a trading standards officer (locally-based business 'policeman') who found people selling discs with Firefox on it and complained to a representative of the Mozilla Foundation that "I can't believe that your company would allow people to make money from something that you allow people to have free access to." My sense if that if it is dependent on all these things, then the notion that "kids today" view online interaction as completely nonstigmatic is a problematic notion. I'm not suggesting that youth don't USE all this stuff -- it's evident that they do and that they are into it. My 9 year old son lives on Runescape whenever he can (playing, for the most part, with the playground crowd from his school). What I am talking about is more like this -- when I interviewed college students a few years ago (before they were all "addicted" -- their own term -- to facebook), the people who rarely used the net socially were very happy to say that those who did things like IM with roomates were "pathetic." The ones who did IM roomates said they did it, but viewed themselves (or at least said they did) as "geeky," "pathetic," and other derogatory terms for doing so. Whether they were really stigmatizing their own internet use, or were responding to a sense that they *should* stigmatize it I don't know.
