Definition for Social Media?

Dear List-members, in the past I have always been able to rely on the common knowledge of this list & I wish to thank you all for this. Once again I'm hoping for some help with this... As we (Belgian Master course in Communication & Multimedia Design - http://c-md.khlim.be) are working out new guidelines for Master theses,we are in search for the/a correct definition of Social Media. What we want to express with the term social media is the fact that in media design we are aware of the existence of others and the collaborations we see happening through the so-called social software. Concrete examples of social media are online communites, social networking places, social sharing tools (flickr),.... Although this is a nice start, we tend to feel that this is a very limited definition as we easily end up with an endless list of possible social practices, but not a more "abstract" definition. To the best of my knowledge, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the relationship between online presence and language death. However the assumption of a relationship is quite commonly held, though the nature of the relationship isn't always agreed upon: "The circumstances that have led to the present language mortality... [include]...electronic media bombardment, especially television, an incalculably lethal new weapon (which I have called 'cultural nerve gas')" Krauss, 1992, p6. "An endangered language will progress if its speakers can make use of electronic technology" Crystal, 2000, p141. However, it is important to recognise that all minority languages are not in the same boat. I totally agree that for some minority languages the Internet is totally irrelevant, but then for some so probably is printing. However for the larger minority languages, it seems to me that the lack of a presence could indeed be argued to be contributing to a languages decline. Take Welsh as an example, approximately 800,000 people with some language skill, good levels of education, high levels of exposure to computers in schools and in the home, reasonable levels of wealth. If Welsh is to be perceived as a modern living language, then surely it must have a presence on the Internet (as in fact it does). Much of the argument is not so much about new opportunities to use the language, but more to do with status, prestige and relevance to the modern world (see for example Eisenlohr, 2004). How could you convince a child going through Welsh medium education that their language was relevant if they never saw it on the Internet? The Catalans have recently gone so far as to establish a new top level Internet domain for their language/culture, so clearly they think it is of relevance to their language (Gerrand, 2006). Each minority language exists in a unique context, any generalisations about what will or won't be beneficial are doomed to look absurd for specific languages. Of course an interesting aside on this is to wonder what will happen to those languages that have a large real world speaker base but only have minimal presence online. Are you going to see a decline in these languages, or will we have some languages that are minority languages online but not offline? **Apologies for cross posting** Call for papers for a special issue of "Zeitschrift fuer Sozialpsychologie" on "New Media and Social Psychology" by guest editors Bernad Batinic & Anja Goeritz Data collection based on novel communication technologies such as the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. The possibilities of adaptive testing, integration of multimedia elements, data collection independent of a particular time and place as well as reduced costs for implementing studies have made these innovative methods particularly appealing to social psychological researchers. Besides using electronic networks for gathering data obtrusively (e.g., online surveys, Web-based experiments, interviews) the Internet can also be used as a platform for unobtrusive data collection such as observations of virtual communities or analyses of log files. Moreover, with the help of Internet services and mobile communication technologies, online and offline elements of data collection can be combined into mixed-mode studies. A special issue of the peer-reviewed journal "Zeitschrift fuer Sozialpsychologie" will present empirical as well as theoretical contributions to data collection involving novel communication technologies. Contributions should have a bearing on social psychology. Topics may range from comparisons of data collection methods via issues of data quality in online studies to innovations at the frontier of methodological development such as Web-based network analysis. Articles may include examinations of a genuinely social psychological phenomenon with the help of new media. Articles may also focus on innovative research methods while establishing a link with social psychology. The special issue "New Media and Social Psychology" will appear in the English language. Contributions may be submitted from now until the 15th of December, 2006. Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Belarusian Mass Media Online

Belarusian Mass Media Online e-belarus.org has recently conducted a survey of Belarusian online news sources. The survey was carried out within the month period( January 6- February, 6, 2006). 10 websites have been selected to represent various styles and approaches to online strategies, as well as different political attitudes. The major quantitative criterion was the average number of visitors per day. To understand users' perceptions and evaluations of online media, e-belarus.org organized focus group discussions. The group consisted of 10 participants, representing the core of Internet audience: individuals with a university degree, aged from 20 to 35, living in Minsk or in a regional center with a monthly income of more than USD 100. According to the information provided by the Ministry of information, there are 8 press agencies, 1148 print media (748 newspapers (136 regional), 400 magazines), 54 TV programmes and 154 radio programmes registered in Belarus [www.mininform.gov.by/main/massmedia/publishing] e-belarus.org survey reveals that only 6% of them have their online avatars: 6 agencies (64%), 58 print media (5%) (11% national and 12% regional ) and 23 TV and radio radio programmes (11%). Tut.by front page is the most popular news site with approximately 60 000 daily visitors. The other five top sites are date.by, naviny. by, charter97.org, bdg.by, svaboda.org. 4% of the total number of media are purely online projects. Two major Belarusian catalogues have registered 52 online projects providing news, including 21 national sites and portals, 8 regional, 19 specialized resources, 2 internet radio projects and 2 news syndication sites. Belarusian indymedia project http://belarus.indymedia.org/ launched in 2005 should be added to the list. The analysis of 10 online news resources conducted by e-belarus.org (tut.by; naviny.by; charter 97; eauramost.org; bdg.online; open.by; kraina.by; date.by; Belaruski partisan; telegraph.by) revealed that 58% of total number of news are taken form national online and offline resources, 37% - from foreign sources. 5% of news are presented without mentioning their sources. This is especially characteristic for the information about PACE and OCSE activities in Belarus, when no references to press-services of these bodies are given. National press agencies provide 34% of news, 38% news are collected from foreign news sources (27% - from Russian, 8% from press - departments of other foreign media), 8% of news these sites borrow news from each other, while only 5% of the total number of news are editorial. The major sources for Belarusian online media are national press agencies Belapan and Belta, Russian lenta.ru, Interfax and Belarusian service of Radio Free Europe website. In spite of the new possibilities opened up by online tools and technologies, Belarusian online media seem to have based their strategies on traditional journalism techniques. The number and quality of Belarusian media online initiatives shows them to be in the period of infancy. The overwhelming majority of them fall within the category of news sites with very limited editorial news and some form of participatory communication.
