Rutgers University The Center for Cultural Analysis announces External Fellowships for 2011-12 on Public Knowledge: Institutions, Networks, Collectives What, today, is public knowledge? What forms have shared, openly accessible bodies of knowledge taken historically, and what are the prospects for collective inquiry in the 21st century? For its 25th Anniversary year, the Center for Cultural Analysis invites projects that investigate the creation and transmission of knowledge by and for a variety of publics, semi-publics, and counter-publics. We are particularly interested in institutions such as universities, museums, and libraries that are explicitly dedicated to the transmission of knowledge across generations. But we will also take up other social practices and cultural forms that serve the public good or the public interest, such as journalism, government reports, learned societies, watchdog agencies, non-governmental organizations, and free and open source software projects. Are there problems that can only be addressed through a collaborative, collective mode of inquiry? How does knowledge become institutionalized, an d how do institutions account for themselves? What are the historical precedents for the informal knowledge networks made possible by new media? Possible areas of inquiry include but are not limited to the history and prospects of the university and other learned societies; public knowledge and social media; the institutional landscape of the public sphere, including corporations and laboratories; the public domain; intellectual property and the privatization of public goods; limits to or restrictions on public knowledge. Proposals are invited from the many disciplines concerned with this topic. In 2011-12, CCA will sponsor two external fellowships with awards of $45,000. CCA also awards non-funded associate fellowships. All fellows will have access to the Center's resources during the tenure of the fellowship and will be expected to participate in and to present their work to the Center seminars, which meet regularly throughout the academic year. Carrielynn, If I understand what you are asking for -- papers positing Virtual Worlds as extensions of existing mediums and embodied experiences -and critiquing arguments that attempt to section them off as something "new" - take a look at Being in the World (of Warcraft): Raiding, Realism, and Knowledge Production in a MMORPG by Alex Golub: http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/anthropological_quarterly/summary/v083/83.1.go… You might also be interested in the work of Thomas Malaby and his ethnography of Linden Labs: *Making Virtual Worlds: Linden Lab and Second Life*. May 2009, Cornell University Press. On a slightly parallel track there's also the work of Jennifer Riskin which traces the historical roots of simulation, which Malaby for example ties heavily into his analysis of LL/2ndLife: Riskin, J. [under 2 weeks to go] CFP: Workshop on The Changing Dynamics of Scientific Collaborations at HICSS (January 4th 2011) http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_44/ Following on from successful workshops at CHI and CSCW we call for 3- to 4-page position papers on the following topics, especially those with a focus on understanding or supporting changing practices in these areas: - Collaborative scientific applications concerning data gathering, analysis, sharing, and visualization - Case studies concerning data gathering, analysis, sharing and visualization - Socio-technical research on scientific collaborations - Research on the scientific software ecosystem - Social networks of scientists - Repurposing social software for science - Participatory design and/or rapid prototyping for scientific software - Distributed data gathering and analysis - Time-critical scientific applications - Studies of generational differences in how science is done - Cross-functional applications and comparisons of a scientific to a non-scientific field - Science and Innovation policy questions on these issues at science funding bodies and beyond. Virtual worlds as not just a new medium

Hello everyone, I am hoping you could give me some ideas about where to find citations to finish a book chapter. A reviewer said of my book chapter, in which I am arguing for how study users' reception of virtual worlds, the following: "as you well know many scholars oppose this view of VWs as just another medium. our chapter might benefit from looking at those scholars that defend VWs are more than just a new medium." Apparently I do not well know this because I do not know exactly who to cite. Who are the scholars who are opposing this view that VWs is just another medium? Specifically, I was arguing that we cannot treat virtual worlds as wholly unique experiences of reception because it is a "new medium". Are there others out there saying the same thing, only I have horrendously overlooked them? CarrieLynn D.
