Journal of Peer Production, Issue 3 The Journal of Peer Production Editorial Board and the issue editors, Maurizio Teli and Vincenzo D'Andrea, are happy to announce the publication of the Special Issue titled "The Critical Power of Free Software: From Intellectual Property to Epistemologies?". The issue explores the contemporary ability of Free Software to constitute a form of epistemological and material critique of contemporary societies. China: networked individualism and Internet work-arounds

I echo Charles Ess in noting the rise of individualism in China. (Or to put it another way, the ending of the short-term Cultural Rev suppression of individualism.) Dare I call it "Networked Individualism" cause people are multiply connected. Our Networked book explicitly looked only at North America, but I'd love to see folks extend the ideas to Asia (N, S, SE) and Europe. On another, related note: peeps shouldnt assume that because authorities block FB & Twitter, that no one can get. My admittedly non-random sample has work-arounds, which I won't disclose. But I will disclose that U Toronto's Citizen Lab headed by Ron Deibert has been getting work-around software to China, Iran, etc. for years. All hail PS: Blocking of FB in China another reason NOT to move this list to FB. Interesting discussion. I was on another vibrant email list, and read the digest every day. They decided to move it to Facebook and it died. I have a nominal FB presence-- mainly so I can keep up with my nieces-- but am not interested in giving any content or advertising opportunities to Facebook. I like the current email approach. As others have noted, if there is a need for another form of exchange, I'd go for a members-only wiki or something like that. Hi All-- I'm glad we are having this discussion too because it gives me the opportunity to ask a probably dumb question about the digest mode--which I prefer over anything to do with Facebook. When I get my digest email from the listserv, I see that the subject headings are usefully numbered, and that way I can see which particular subjects or threads I want to read in the digest. However, it seems strange that after all these years of listserv existence, the numbered subject headings have not become links that we can click on to go directly to that particular email. I know we can use the "find" command, but that seems so clunky and inconvenient. So am I missing something here? Twitter Research Question

I'm at the beginnings of a Twitter study looking at a community's reaction to a televised event. In my literature review, I'm having a difficult time justifying when to include the community's tweets chronologically preceding the event and following the event. For those of you that do content analysis on social media like Twitter, do any of you have suggestions? The data has already been collected using a Twitter scraper. I'm just trying to decide right now how to define the boundaries for my analysis. Any suggestions or a study you can point to that uses a similar method will be helpful. Hi All, We do have an AoIR wiki (http://wiki.aoir.org/page/Main_Page)--but some of the material is no longer available. As I recall, there were sections for digital research tools and teaching resources. Perhaps we can start an new section for syllabi/reading materials. David, The point you make about the benefit of "lurkers" is a very good one. Indeed this is a 'weak-tie' sort of network, and we never know where insights will come from, right? I think it's more a matter of adjusting (myself) to AoIR culture, which seems much more inclusive than other research groups and organizations that might see "lurkers" as more meddlesome than (a word that means "helpful" that begins in "m"?). But, I should have expected at least as much from AoIR scholars as "network folks" - it seems that Granovetter wins, yet again. And Ella, see? I deleted the e-mail I'm responding to. =)

A suggestion for reading lists and syllabi

Hello all, As we all know, one of the routine uses for this listserv is to request reading suggestions, syllabi, and other course related materials. I was wondering if it would be possible to establish some sort of reading list, syllabus, assignment, etc. exchange on the AoIR website as a central place to share this information. I have used these pages for other groups and find they are very helpful, particularly when it comes to finding appropriate readings for undergrads. I realize that setting up and maintaining such a page would require additional thought and debate. I am just putting the idea out there for future consideration and discussion (maybe in Denver?). I also realize that adding a feature to the website is extra work for someone, and so, I would be willing to help if the idea is carried forward. Andrea -- Andrea L.
