New book: Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media

Dear colleagues, I wish I could be out there in Korea telling you about this! My book "Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media" about why people share personal details about their lives on social media and the personal and societal consequences of these practices has just been published by Palgrave Macmillan. At the micro-sociological level its analysis draws on insights from interviews with individual social media users. The book also takes into account a range of macro-sociological influences including the power of software defaults, the changing technological landscape of sharing and the commercial imperatives of the new media industry. It critically reviews the literature about online danger and it ends with recommendations for the industry, policy makers and educators. On a personal note, the book acknowledges the vital role that the AoIR played in helping this book reach fruition. Thank you everyone. While this is a theoretically-informed and fully referenced academic text I am an ex-journalist and I am confident it should be readable by a broad range of students. I have structured the introductory chapter in particular so that it provides a succinct overview of the whole book. Students will also be pleased to hear it is already available in softcover ($28/£18 list) and on Kindle ($18/£10) as well as in hardback ($95/£65). Organizational Communication and Information Systems (OCIS) Program Chair: Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, University of Illinois at Chicago, mbwm.ocis.aom(a)gmail.com 2015 OCIS Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions Specific Domain: OCIS focuses on the study of behavioral, economic, and social aspects of communication and information systems within and among organizations or institutions. Major topics include: interpersonal communication; verbal, nonverbal, and electronic communication; vertical, horizontal and diagonal communication; inter-group and intra-group communication; communication networks; applications of information technology in business and society; organizational adoption of communication and information technology; communication and information strategy and policy; communication and organizational culture; communication and information research methodology; managing information technology services; virtual teams, virtual work, and virtual organizations; the management of information systems professionals; e-communications; information systems development; managing IT-related organizational change; e-business, e-commerce, and e-markets; electronic value systems, value chains, and value webs; privacy and ethics; knowledge work, knowledge workers, and knowledge networks; IT infrastructure; governance of IT services; and organizational networks. Special Instructions: OCIS invites the submission of innovative empirical or conceptual papers and symposia on all themes of interest to the Academy that touch on organizational communications and/or information systems. Topics that are specifically oriented to the 2015 all-Academy theme of “Open Governance” are especially encouraged. This year’s theme encourages reflection on opportunities for communication and information technology to improve the effectiveness and creativity of organizations. In particular, it calls for examination of systems and decision-making in light of big data, crowdsourcing, and other emerging digital technologies, as well as new approaches to collaboration, partnership, and value creation within and among organizations. OCIS invites management, communication, and information systems scholars to reflect on how we can enhance the value of our research, teaching, and service, and inspire and enable a better world. Division Awards: Division awards will be presented for best program paper, best interactive paper, best student paper and best reviewer. The Gerardine DeSanctis Dissertation Award will be presented again at the 2015 meeting. The award, inaugurated by the OCIS division at the 2007 Annual Meeting, is open to solo-authored papers based on a dissertation completed within the past three years (see the OCIS Division website at http://ocis.aomonline.org for more details). The winner of the DeSanctis Award will be automatically nominated for the Academy-wide William H. Newman Award. The OCIS Division will also nominate one paper for the Academy-wide Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award (see the Orientation and Awards section in the submission guidelines for more details). In addition to these program-related awards, an award will be given for the best paper published by an OCIS member during 2014. 4th Technological Ubiquity Conference

Hello. The Study Group on Technological Ubiquity, composed and managed by master's and doctoral students of the Graduate Program in Social Communication of PUCRS, invites the academic community and interested in the areas of Research, Communication, Technology and Education to participate in the 4th Technological Ubiquity Confetence. The event will take place on October 29th, at 3pm in the Auditorium of Famecos (PUCRS - Porto Alegre - Brazil). The Technological Ubiquity Conference is an event organized since 2011 by the Study Group in Technological Ubiquity (UBITEC), linked to the the Postgraduate Program in Social Communication of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGCOM/PUCRS). The central purpose of the event is to provide a space for discussion and reflection on the role of digital technologies of communication in our society, since these are present in all contemporary social processes. The 4th Technological Ubiquity Conference will be composed by three axes: Research, Education and Market. It is intended to discuss the different aspects of ubiquitous communication in these contexts, addressing perspectives of uses and appropriations of information and communication technologies; media convergence; transmedia; educational processes and perspectives; technological ubiquity in research communication; digital consumption. To discuss these issues, the event will consist of four discussion panels, which will count with the participation of researchers and professionals in the proposed areas. *Discussion Panels * Panel I - Technologies of everyday life: uses and appropriations Panel II - Study groups of PPGCOM/PUCRS: different perspectives of ubiquity in Communication researches Panel III - Technology integrated with education: challenges and possibilities Panel IV - Ubiquitous communication, convergence and market *Objective* The main objective of the Conference is to discuss the uses and appropriations of information technologies and ubiquitous communication and how they have been impacting the various aspects of social, academic and professional life. Our department pioneered the first Technical Communication degree and first B.S. degree in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication (EMAC) with the Department of the Arts. Energized by our unique position in a technological institute, we are a leader in collaborative interdisciplinary programs, including a nationally ranked program in Games and Simulations Arts and Sciences (GSAS) with the Department of Cognitive Science and the Department of the Arts. Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest technological university. Hope to see many of you in Puerto Rico! 12th ICA Mobile Pre-Conference CALL FOR PAPERS May 20-21 (1.5 days), 2015. Deadline for Extended Abstract Submissions: December 1, 2014. Communication through mobile media has become central to people’s lives around the world, no matter age, gender, or ethnicity, and is driven by widespread adoption of a repertoire of mobile devices. Usage of mobile media is closely tied to the life circumstances of individuals. The 12th annual ICA Mobile Pre-conference will examine, scrutinize, and reflect upon the influence of this dominant new medium on everyday practices of communication through the theme “From Womb to Tomb: Mobile Research Across Genders, Generations, Ethnicities, Cultures, and Life Stages. We anticipate a broad range of research topics in mobile communication and welcome extended abstracts based on empirical and/or theoretical work as it relates to: civic engagement, activism and social movements, social media, learning and education, methodologies, international contexts, international development, health, cultural similarities and differences, local culture and heritage, place-based issues, journalism, politics, usability issues, user experiences and perceptions, technologies, interfaces, mobile media histories and archaeology The pre-conference will include a workshop for emerging scholars to provide a forum where graduate students, new faculty, and early scholars can present and discuss their research with more experienced mobile researchers, thus representing an opportunity to establish and nurture a supportive and integrated community.
