We invite you to read a new Special Section on "Selfies" that published May 15 at http://ijoc.org. “What Does the Selfie Say? Investigating a Global Phenomenon” “Selfies” are ubiquitous. Yet the term—and more so the practice(s)—remain ambiguous, fraught, and caught in a stubborn and morally-loaded hype cycle. This Special Section on What Does the Selfie Say? Investigating a Global Phenomenon (guest-edited by Theresa M. Senft and Nancy K. Baym) considers the selfie as the reigning litmus test of (accurate, authentic, legitimate, appropriate) digital self-representation. Drawing on work from diverse methods and perspectives and a global range of research sites, together, these articles consider what the selfie says about our theoretical conceptions of photography, assemblage, affect and autobiography; how the selfie reflects political narratives about the state, the electorate, the subaltern, the activist, and the martyr; and how it frames ongoing conversations about gender, race, ethnicity, age and sexuality. Innovative methods for assessing acceptability of technological innovations

Dear all, I hope this e-mail finds you well. I come today with a methodological question: At Eticas we are developing a methodology for societal impact assessment. Among other things, we want to assess (and to some extent) forecast attitudes of acceptance/rejection towards specific technological innovations (in particular those that imply personal data gathering and thus may ingringe the right to privacy). For instance, the installation of supercookies in their computers that might be collecting all sorts of sensitive information without them noticing (browsing history, navigation path, time spent at each website...). Using surveys for this forecasting has shown to be of low relevance, as individuals have not developed an opinión on certain aspects and, consequently, they cannot predict how would they react in front of a certain innovation. We are considering to use quasi-experiments or even some sort of role playing or gammification, but I was wondering if any of you may have experience or references on that. Any help or hint would be much appreciated. Hi everyone, I'm forwarding an email sent on behalf of the National Communication Association about the U.S. Congress's efforts to make draconian cuts to funding basic research in human and social research. If you live in the U.S., please write your member of the House of Representatives and urge them to vote no on H.R. 1806. It helps if you can indicate to your Representative what your stake or interest is in this issue to personalize it. As well, feel free to borrow from any of the verbiage I used to write my Representative: This letter comes to encourage you to stand for science and innovation and to vote against anything that will curtailfunding for the National Science Foundation in general. In specific, I am writing to highlight that if H.R. 1806 were passed, it would gut social and behavioral science research and stifle scientific progress. The bill cuts funding for NSF's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate nearly in half. The bill also contains language putting in place arbitrary funding caps on scientific fields, allowing non-scientists to pick "winners and losers" based on purely political interests, and discouraging inter-disciplinary science. The bill advanced through the committee along party lines and now heads to the House floor. There are several troubling aspects to this proposed reauthorization. H.R. 1806 dramatically changes how NSF is funded. Historically, NSF has received a bulk appropriation from the federal government; it has been NSF's responsibility to determine how that appropriation is spent among its myriad programs and directorates. H.R. 1806 takes that responsibility away from NSF and transfers it to Congress-the bill actually specifies directorate-by-directorate funding levels for NSF. Within this structure, the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate faces a budget cut of over 45%. The COMPETES bill is scheduled to be on the House floor the week of May 18. CALL FOR PAPERS Digital Animals: Inhabiting the Intersections of Nature, Culture, and Technology TRACE (http://trace.english.ufl.edu/) publishes online peer-reviewed collections in ecology, posthumanism, and media studies. Providing an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, we focus on the ethical and material impact of technology. We welcome submissions in a variety of media that engage cultures, theories, and environments to “trace” the connections across and within various ecologies. The first issue of TRACE explores current conversations at the intersection of animal studies and digital media studies. Animal studies scholars argue that animals influence the ways we engage with philosophy, critical theory, literature, and filmic technologies. Moreover, posthumanist theorists, such as Cary Wolfe and Donna Haraway, challenge how humans relate to animals--decentering humans as the reference for understanding relationships between nature and technology. TRACE’s Digital Animals: Inhabiting the Intersections of Nature, Culture, and Technology extends conversations by examining the role of digital media in animal lives and representations. Building on recent conversation in Antennae’s “Virtual Animals” and similar publications, TRACE questions how digital technology augments human-animal interactions and reimagines alterity, agency, affect, identity, embodiment, and experience. Animals influence digital media by challenging anthroponormative approaches to technology use and design. From drone surveillance systems shaped like sharks to ipad apps for cats - animals drive innovations in digital technology. This issue invites scholars to explore the shared ecology of animals and technology. Contributions should make evident how cultures conceptualize nonhuman species, as well as illustrate how digital media can either reify or challenge established perceptions. Topics for papers may include: · Representations of animals in games, social media, apps, hypertexts, internet memes, etc. · Digital media designed for nonhuman animals · Digital imaging, modeling, motion capture, or 3D printing of or related to animals · Artificial intelligence · Animal robotics and prostheses · Microchipping, tagging, and other mechanisms of digital tracking · The roles of digital media in animal rights advocacy or ethics · Posthumanism and systems theory Completed articles will be peer-reviewed and should be between 3000-6000 words in length.
