Hello Andrew and all, I used MAXQDA for coding and additional analysis for my interviews. The program also has a system for creating memos (stand alone, attached to text, attached to codes, etc) and creating internal document links. *Call for Papers* *Bridging Gaps:* *Where is the Persona in Celebrity and Journalism?* * The Terrace Club** 25 W. 51st St. (Off Fifth Ave.) New York, NY* * September 2-3, 2015 * In tabloid journalism and in social media, gossip, rumors and scandals about celebrities develop intimacy among fans. Such gossip and rumour mongering serves a purpose in society: to build a common moral ground on the backs of celebrity lives. However what about the celebrities themselves whose emotional lives are consumed by us? The production, circulation and reception of these celebrities then negate the democratic role of journalism in providing value-free information and undermine artistic talent and activism for which many celebrities became famous. Corporate interests of governments and businesses have dominated the field of journalism and the new industry, in particular. A combination of media productions such as interviews, portraits, diary entries, life-writing, and unedited footage can facilitate a relation between celebrities as subjects of journalistic enquiry and modes of their representation. The biographical and autobiographical elements in these productions can express nuances and subtleties of creative drives that construct public personas. Scholars can also act as journalists and interview celebrities, adding research as informed opinions. As celebrity studies scholar Olivier Driessens suggests, there are innovative ways in which researchers can surpass cultural intermediaries, such as managers, who control the celebrity's agenda, and fill methodological gaps in media studies and practices. We need to build academic, media and community partnerships to implement creative strategies and informed opinions in content production. What creative strategies do you implement to position your modes of inquiry in celebrity culture? How can journalists benefit from researchers in developing stories? Should academics become cultural critics to build an engaged audience? Show new and powerful ways of storytelling that journalists and researchers should consider in examining authentic personas in fame. "Divides: Inclusion & Representation Across the Web" http://divides2015.org/ Workshop at the 2015 ACM Web Science Conference http://websci15.org/ Oxford University | June 28, 2015 - July 1, 2015 ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------- While the Web has immensely expanded opportunities for diverse populations to engage in global discussions and contribute to online content, questions on how to expand online inclusivity and better attend to a politics of representation remain pertinent to Web Science. In their monograph, "Web Science: Understanding the Emergence of Macro-Level Features on the World Wide Web," O'Hara et al set forth that the scientific study of the Web hinges on considering how micro-level actions emerge into macro-level phenomena. The goal of this workshop is to reflect on these micro-level actions from the standpoint of users who have been habitually excluded from or misrepresented in Web environments and to consider how these divides play a role in shaping macro-level phenomena. In doing so, the workshop aims to facilitate interdisciplinary discussions that consider how Web standards, technologies, platforms, and research methodologies could be improved so as to increase inclusivity and refocus representation on the Web. This workshop is framed in terms of 'divides' both strategically and with caution. Focus on 'bridging the digital divide' has privileged concerns about access to digital technologies over the design and research decisions that facilitate exclusion and misrepresentation. While exclusion from the Web is an issue that needs to be attended to, we would like to broaden the concept of digital divides. The traditional focus narrows the scope of 'divides' to those who have access to digital technology v. those that do not, ignoring the diversity of users with access, the role of architecture in causing exclusion, and the role of certain research methodologies in establishing a politics of representation. In another sense, the traditional focus forecloses rich interdisciplinary collaborations; bridging the digital divide becomes a mutually exclusive activity where social scientists point out excluded populations and computer scientists design and deliver. Instead, this workshop will aim to reinvigorate the concept of 'divides' with a focus on how social scientists and computer scientists can draw on each other's expertise in order to offer insights on how Web standards, technologies, and platforms can be restructured to enhance participation and engagement with the Web amongst diverse populations. It will additionally consider how research studying the Web as complex socio-technical system can better attend to those who have been excluded from or poorly represented in Web environments. The workshop aims to collect empirical cases that exemplify why an attention to divides is so critical to Web Science. The organizers want to provide a forum in which both social scientists and computer scientists can draw from their experiences in designing and studying the Web in order to provide concrete examples of exclusion and misrepresentation. ------------ Submissions ------------ We are seeking papers that provoke conversation on Web exclusion and misrepresentation, report on experiences from past or current projects, that offer ideas for solutions, or strategies. What personal significance does the internet have for users?

Hi In an article I am preparing, I write about an African informant's personal assessment of what the internet means to him. He underlines that the internet is a direct extension of previous technology like telegraph, telefax, and that it continues to offer "Verschriftlichung" (putting oral into writing). After describing his view, I claim: "I have a hunch that European users would rather emphasize speed, convenience, ubiquity and access to the realm of information, than the /solidifying /of information." But this is just a hunch, and I don't know if I am correct. Are there studies to back up or refute my claim? Are there surveys contrasting users (by culture or age) in their perception of what the internet means? Thanks for any pointers! -- Daniel Jung

Hi all THEORISING DIGITAL SOCIETY UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA, 14 SEPTEMBER 2015 Drawing inspiration from the successful ‘Theorizing the Web’ conferences held annually in the USA since 2011, this one-day symposium will present new research that brings theoretical perspectives to bear on contemporary digital media and other digital technologies. The keynote speaker is Professor Susan Halford, Head of the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology and Co-Director of the Web Science Institute, University of Southampton, UK. Okay following up on this - this is a clear case of candidate fail! I suffered at the hands of the power of default. Our profiles in the AoIR membership system are set to be locked down in privacy terms, and of course this translates into the discussion facility. If you want to comment or are a candidate, I recommend you visit privacy settings and open them up. Of course, I realise some people might want to comment anonymously - if so you you might want to visit privacy to lock things back down! Candidates, we really do need to open up our profiles though otherwise no one can work out who’s saying what unless we put our name at the top/bottom of a post. Call for Papers: Standards, Disruptions and Values in Digital Culture and Communication Organised by the Digital Culture and Communication Section of ECREA (DCC), and the Department of Communication Studies (ICT&S Center), University of Salzburg, 26-28 November 2015 Keynote speakers: Prof Charles Ess (University of Oslo) Prof Helen Kennedy (University of Sheffield) In digital culture and communication, with the pervasiveness that characterises online media, standards and values are contested, whereas well-established paths in the production and circulation of information have been newly arranged or abandoned altogether. Technical and social standards are consistent, formal and informal norms, values or conventions of doing, operating, producing, and/or performing. As the basis of technical transmission, standards in media allow transferability and interoperability, reduce complexity, and facilitate communication across formats, platforms and boundaries. As a consequence of transformations and re-orientations that continuously happen in almost all fields of the media, new technological standards, ethical codes, narrative and visual tropes are being produced. It is therefore crucial to critically evaluate the relationship between standards and values in their social, political, technological and creative dimensions. Who has the power to define, develop and implement standards? Which values are attached to standardisation processes in creative industries and how are they related to copyright and patents in technological development? Are peer-production, open-access publishing and free-culture movements different kinds of markets or disruptions to existing models of markets? What is the relationship between technological standardisation and cultural diversity? This workshop aims to address such questions. We welcome papers on the following issues and topics: - Technical and social standards in digital media: How do technical standards evolve in the media industry and how are they implemented? What kind of values shape this process? What modes of interventions exist (e.g. between players like platform operators and users?) - Visual and narrative standards and disruptions in digital culture: How are visual standards and codes built and how do they influence the comprehension of data? How do visual media and narratives introduce new canons in forms such such as remix, memes or selfies? - Professional and ethical standards in digital contexts: Who is responsible of implementing professional ethical standards?
