Please forward to your networks! --- MSR’s Social Media Collective is looking for a 2015-16 Research Assistant (to start 15 July) Microsoft Research (MSR) is looking for a Research Assistant to work with the Social Media Collective in the New England lab, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The MSR Social Media Collective consists of Nancy Baym, Sarah Brayne, Kevin Driscoll, Tarleton Gillespie, Mary L. Gray, and Lana Schwartz in Cambridge, and Kate Crawford and danah boyd in New York City, as well as faculty visitors and Ph.D. interns affiliated with the MSR New England. The RA will work directly with Nancy Baym, Kate Crawford, Tarleton Gillespie, and Mary L. Gray. Unfortunately because this is a time-limited contract position, we can only consider candidates who are already legally eligible to work in the United States. An appropriate candidate will be a self-starter who is passionate and knowledgeable about the social and cultural implications of technology. Strong skills in writing, organization and academic research are essential, as are time-management and multi-tasking. Minimal qualifications are a BA or equivalent degree in a humanities or social science discipline and some qualitative research training. Job responsibilities will include: – Sourcing and curating relevant literature and research materials – Developing literature reviews and/or annotated bibliographies – Coding ethnographic and interview data – Copyediting manuscripts – Working with academic journals on themed sections – Assisting with research project data management and event organization The RA will also have opportunities to collaborate on ongoing projects. While publication is not a guarantee, the RA will be encouraged to co-author papers while at MSR. The RAship will require 40 hours per week on site in Cambridge, MA, and remote coordination with New York City-based researchers. It is a 12 month contractor position, with the opportunity to extend the contract an additional 6 months. The position pays hourly with flexible daytime hours. The start date will ideally be July 15, although flexibility is possible for the right candidate. This position is perfect for emerging scholars planning to apply to PhD programs in Communication, Media Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Information Studies, and related fields who want to develop their research skills before entering a graduate program. Current New England-based MA/PhD students are welcome to apply provided they can commit to 40 hours of on-site work per week. Hello all, I'm hoping the AoIR crew might be able to help me on this quest. I'm trying to track down platform-specific research on fan communities online. I'm particularly looking for ethnographic studies of LiveJournal-based fan communities and production/communication networks in the early 2000s. However, it doesn't need to be fan specific. Any research on LiveJournal use in the early 2000s could potentially be helpful, particularly if its addressing collaborative work of the platform. If any of you have come across research on this topic, I'd really appreciate your input. I've been able to uncover a few pieces of research, but I'd really love to add to my reading list. CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2015 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Jennifer Dunn, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. What are your qualifications for this position (including prior experience and participation in AoIR)? I’m currently an Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago in the Department of Communication. Before that, I was Assistant Professor of New/Digital Media and Director of the Center for Digital Ethics at Loyola University Chicago. Before, after, and during grad school I spent time as a user-researcher, information architect, and user-interface designer for a bunch of (now failed) start-ups, an educational technology division of a university, and Getty Images. My research interests include the social and cultural implications of new media, design, gaming, and ethics. I’ve just written a book about the culture of reddit based on a three year ethnography of the platform (Participatory culture, community, and play: Learning from reddit), and I’ve published in a number of journals. My first interaction with AoIR was at IR 4 in Toronto in 2003. I was a newly minted MA student embarking on my PhD at University of Washington. As a grad student, I was struck by how welcoming and giving the AoIR community was - and it is this aspect of AoIR that I continue to cherish. Since then, I’ve attended something like 7 conferences (give or take), and am an active lurker (!!) on the AOIR-org list. > > 2. If elected, I have a few goals I’ll work towards: First, I’d like the AoIR executive committee to create and open for member review a specific anti-harassment statement for its conferences and other activities. I know we have a diversity and inclusivity statement, but I’d like us to have a more formal policy regarding how harassment will be handled if it happens either at the conference proper, on the mailing list, and/or on Twitter, etc. (something, perhaps like Theorizing the Web’s statement: http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/post/79357700249/anti-harassment-stateme… <http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/post/79357700249/anti-harassment-stateme…>). This seems critical if we are going to make AoIR a safe space for everyone. Second, I would like to continue to broaden our conference attendance to include more individuals from other fields - art, activism, game production, etc. To that end, I would like to see a reworking of the conference reviewing process and the kinds of presentation sessions we offer at AoIR. It’s been great to witness the inclusion of more flexible presentation styles (pecha kucha, fishbowls, birds-of-a-feather, etc.) in the last few conference programs, but I believe we can continue to think creatively about how to make AoIR a more inclusive space for folks in other fields. I’d also like to see some inclusion of “high-density” panels - where a group of 5-10 individuals have about 5 minutes to discuss the most exciting implications of their work and then they open it up to a larger conversation with the audience. I guess what I’m interested in doing is figuring out how to make AoIR conferences more conducive to conversations and exhibitions rather than just presentations (while still preserving the latter). I’m happy to brainstorm this further with the executive committee as well as take ownership of actually implementing whatever changes we decide upon. Third, I’d like to start seeing us being more proactive in engaging the public on issues related to our work. There are a lot of great folks in AoIR doing tremendous research, but we seem to have little exposure beyond our corner of the world. I think something simple like compiling a list of individuals who are interested in being press contacts for particular issues might be a start. > > 3. What is your long-term vision for AoIR? Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute has 13 summer internships available at The University of Nottingham. Each internship is funded for 10 weeks. The School is currently investing in three strategic appointments in the following areas: • *Social Media *(we especially welcome applicants with expertise in: use of social media by organisations, communities and individuals; use of social media in strategic decisionmaking; research methods for capturing, analysing and utilising social media data; digital security; information policy and information governance); • *Data/Information Management* (we especially welcome applicants with expertise in: information architecture and knowledge organisation; data visualisation/communication; user behaviours; enterprise information management; and enterprise systems management; and the organisational and decision making context of data science/information management); • *Management and Strategy in Information Services* (we especially welcome applicants with expertise in: strategic planning; change management; knowledge management; supplier relationship management; customer relationship management and service quality management; and the management and use of information within organisational contexts). *Chair* You will have an outstanding track-record of research including an international reputation, publications in highly ranked international journals, substantial success in grant capture, proven skills in academic leadership and management, including team building, and a commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative research. You will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and will be able to recognise and build on the current research strengths of the School and have the ability to further enhance the next phase of the School’s research and impact profile in your chosen area. You will be expected to fully contribute to research, teaching and administration within the School. *Lecturer, Senior Lecturer* You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field, a well-established or developing research profile, proven teaching ability, a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and will make a key contribution to advancing the School’s competitive position. S/he provides strategic leadership and administrative management over the implementation of MIP research initiatives, resource development, and public programming. This includes aligning day-to-day operations and research activities with a strategic vision for long-term growth. Additionally, the research director also maintains an active research agenda of his or her own that contributes to one or more of the established research priorities within the MIP mission statement. Responsibilities Intellectual--40% Develop, implement, manage, and contribute to all facets of MIP research initiatives, academic and industry events, and educational materials Develop, implement, and maintain an active research agenda that aligns with MIP research initiatives Identify opportunities to integrate MIP research initiatives into undergraduate and graduate curriculum Serve as managing editor of the MIP website, overseeing all aspects of content creation, acquisition, and editing; editorial staff deployment; and author contributions Operational--40% Provide leadership and supervision for all MIP staff, including MIP GSR, student workers, and external contractors Serve as webmaster of the MIP website, overseeing all aspects of content management, production, distribution, and promotion Manage MIP operational budget and allocation of funds Manage day-to-day administration, correspondence, and scheduling matters Collaborate with CWC staff, Development department officers, industry partners, and campus faculty and staff Outreach--20% Serve as the primary point person for MIP outreach efforts, attending industry events and academic conferences as an ambassador for the project and its activities Establish, support, and maintain a marketing and promotional strategy for MIP research and related activities The Research Director works with a team of faculty, graduate students, and industry researchers under the direction of the Carsey-Wolf Center Executive Director. Applicants should have expertise with issues related to traditional and new media industries, including familiarity with relevant technologies, industry trends, professional practices, policy concerns, global dynamics, and social issues. Applicants should also have excellent communication skills and be comfortable interacting with high-level media professionals, scholars, and the public. A Ph.D. in media studies, communication, or a related discipline is required, and candidates should be published in her/his field of expertise and currently engaged in a relevant program of scholarly research. This is a 100% time position for 12 months, which is renewable based on funding and satisfactory performance reviews. Full health and disability benefits are included.
