Dear All, Below please find a CFP for a panel I'm organizing on crowdmapping/crowdsourcing for the International Studies Association Annual Conference, held in Atlanta this year from March 16-19, 2016. Hoping it will be of interest to some… * * * CFP: Mapping and Meaning Making in the Crowded Networks of the Global South Discourses and representations of the new ‘population bomb’ in the global South are no longer only organized around 20th century concerns over birth rates and limited planetary resources; through advances in software, mobile technologies, and geo-spatial data collection they are now also about the visualization and digital agency of bodies deemed threatening, menacing and violent. These new digital cartographies of danger are facilitated by the move of crowdsourced data and funding models from commercial enterprises to international organizations and NGOs addressing a vast range of issues, from development and disaster management, to human security governance and sexual violence. The proliferating used of crowd-technologies raises important questions about how are bodies, experiences, and publics are materialized through algorithms, statistics and the assembly and organization of data provided by these self-selecting communities. This panel invites papers that critically reflect upon the ways in which crowdsourcing is altering international politics and publics, and how discourses about the assumed utility and democratizing potential of crowdsourcing filters in and through claims about ‘Western’ technological superiority, progress, innovation, precision, and market-based ethics. For instance, how does crowdsourcing and crowdmapping speak to the relationship between space and calculation? How might crowdsourcing produce racialized, class-based, and gendered exclusions through the assembly and organization of data in the interest of particular communities and security paradigms? How is crowdsourced data collected and assembled to present particular cartographic representations of politics ‘on the ground’, thus making certain visualizations of political life possible? And how might the resynthesizing of data to demonstrate large quantities or patterns of violence determine the shape and effects of particular kinds of international interventions? 1. Nud.ist became QSR NVivo many years ago. Much changed. 2. I am not a proponent of any but a general warning: While all programs are subject to disappearing without notice, I would be careful of any that are new-ish start-ups, in case they don't have longevity. You'd then be stuck with a a non-upgradeable program, or even worse, some thing that lived on the little cloud that died (apologies to Johnny Mathis) NVivo, Atlas-TI, MaxDA (sp?) have been around for years. I don't know about the others. I haven't used any in quite a while, so no comments on what to choose. Happy Almost Victoria Day! Announcing two workshops: *Charting the Next Decade for Value Sensitive Design *or *Multi-Lifespan Information System Design*, to be held at the fifth decennial Aarhus conference, Critical Alternatives, which aims to set new agendas for theory and practice in computing for quality of human life. Critical Alternatives 2015 5th Decennial Aarhus Conference Denmark August 17-21, 2015 http://aarhus2015.org Consider attending one or both of these workshops which are sure to be stimulating. Position papers are *due May 15, 2015*. *Charting the Next Decade for Value Sensitive Design* https://chartingvsd2015.wordpress.com This workshop brings together scholars of human-centered computing, computer sciences, intelligent systems, ethics, philosophy and related fields to critically discuss their experiences, case studies and critical reflections of using value sensitive design (VSD) and setting the agenda for VSD in the next decade. The workshop intends to: - Build a network of support between the novice and expert researchers in VSD - Discuss and critique various adaptations and appropriations of VSD - Explore differences in VSD methods for short versus long term projects - Discuss opportunities for collaboration among the community (e.g. establishing an online VSD repository) - Reflect on the last 20 years of VSD research and create a roadmap for VSD in the coming decade Value Sensitive Design is a well-established design framework for accounting for designers’ and stakeholders’ values in ICT design. With the growth of the world-wide VSD community in the last 20 years, the framework has matured, a multitude of VSD-specific methods have been developed and design cases in diverse domains (e.g. medical applications, homelessness, urban planning, robotics) have been carried out. This is a good time to take a step back, reflect on the achievements of the last 20 years and discuss open issues and new directions for the future. In particular, it is our intention to strengthen the VSD community across different countries and disciplines, support novice researchers in the field, and work towards a shared repository of VSD theories and practices. While VSD has proven to be a guiding methodology for the design of ICT systems that go beyond mere usability and user experience, new challenges lie ahead. With the ongoing changes from personal computing to large networked systems and computation embedded into the environment we need to shift our focus from single user values to social values. Working together across disciplines on value sensitive solutions in the age of ubiquitous computing is indispensable and setting the roadmap for this endeavor is one of the foci of this workshop. Workshop Framing: Genocide. HIV/AIDS. Famine. Deforestation. Forced exodus. These problems share some commonalities. In one way or another, they entail widespread losses to human beings, to other sentient beings, or to the natural world; moreover, those losses are not likely to be made up within the time frame of a single human lifespan (if ever). It is also the case that information and the interactive processes around information may have much to contribute to the solutions of these problems. How then might we explicitly address this class of problems through information system design? What unique opportunities exist for interactive information systems? What rigorous design knowledge and methods are needed to make progress? In a field known for cutting edge innovation, where devices over five years old are regarded as legacy, how can researchers and designers begin to consider processes and solutions that likely extend beyond a single human lifespan? These questions lay out critical considerations for the multi-lifespan information system design. In this workshop we draw on the organizers’ background and participants’ research and personal experiences in encountering significant societal issues that will unfold over very long periods of time. Our aim is to: (1) elaborate and identify new opportunities and challenges in taking up multi-lifespan information system design problems, and (2) generate critical and constructive discussions for further development of the multi-lifespan information system design thinking. The closest parallels I can think of are: - Samizdat Literature in Eastern Europe. - People's Presses - The Searchlight, Appeal to Reason, Penny Press, etc. - Citizen's Band Radio - Amateur or Ham radio. However the Net seems to have grown farther and to be more accessible than the above. The audience is larger, and continues to grow. Plus communication via the Net allows easier control over the information -- as it is digitized and can be stored, sorted, searched, replied to, and easily adapted to another format. The Net is the vehicle for distribution of people's ideas, thoughts and yearnings. No commercial service deals with the presentation of peoples' ideas. I do not need a computer to order flowers from FTD or clothes from the Gap. I need the Net to be able to voice my thoughts, artistic impressions, and opinions to the rest of the world. The world will then be a judge as to if they are worthy by either responding or ignoring my contribution. Throughout history (at least in the USA), there has been a phenomenon of the streetcorner soapbox. People would "stand up" and make a presentation of some beliefs or thoughts they have. There are very few soapboxes in our society today. The '70s and '80s wiped out public expression. The financial crisis substitued a growing sentiment of make your money or shut up. In the late '80s and early '90s, the Net has emerged as a forum for public expression and discussion. The Net is partially a development from those who were involved with the Civil Rights movement, anti-war struggles and free speech movements in the '60s. The personal computer was also a development by some of these same people. Somehow the social advances rise from the fact that people are communicating with other people to help them undermine the upper hand other institutions have. An example is people in California keeping tabs on gas station prices around the state using Netnews and exposing gougers. Another example is people publically reviewing music themselves -- rather than telling others," you should really go buy the latest issue of magazine 'X' (Rolling Stone, etc) as it has a great review." This is what I mean by people power -- people individually communicating to present their view on something rather than saying go get commercial entity X's view from place 'Y'. This is people contributing to other people to make a difference in people's lives. In addition, people have debated commercial companies' opposition to the selling of used CDs. This conversation is done in a grassroots way -- people are questioning the music industry's profit making grasp on the music out there. The industry definitely puts profit ahead of artistic merit, and people are not interested in the industry's profit making motive, but rather great music. The Net is allowing two new avenues not available to the average person before: 1) A way of having one's voice heard. 2) A way of organizing and questioning other people's experiences so as to have a better grip on a question or problem. Thus in some ways there is a regaining control of one's life from society. These are all reasons why I feel so passionately about 1) keeping the Net open to everyone, and having such connections being available publicly, and 2) Keeping the Net uncommercialized and unprivatized. Commercialism will lead to a growing emphasis on OTHER uses for the Net. As I said before, it is NOT important for me to be able to custom order my next outfit from the Gap or any other clothing store. Companies should develop their own networks if they wish to provide another avenue to sell their products. In addition, commercial companies will not have it in their interest to allow people to use the Net to realize their political self. Again let me reemphasize, when I say politics, I mean power over one's own life and surroundings. Hi Andrew, I use MAXQDA <http://www.maxqda.com/> and have found it be quite flexible for coding all types of files, including audio and video. It accommodates mixed methods work, and has some basic visualization tools too. I recently had an undergraduate student use it for a research project as well, and she reported that it is quite intuitive and easy to learn. Free trials are available through the website.
