SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS Submission is now open Geomedia 2017: Spaces of the In-Between Karlstad, Sweden, 9-12 May 2017 Welcome to the 2nd international Geomedia conference! The term geomedia captures the fundamental role of media in organizing and giving meaning to processes and activities in space. It also refers to the geographical qualities of media, for example flows of digital signals between particular places and the infrastructure carrying those flows. The rapid expansion of mobile media, location-based services, geographical information systems and increasingly complex patterns of surveillance/interveillance has amplified the need for critical studies and theorizations of geomedia. The 2nd Geomedia Conference welcomes contributions (full sessions/panels as well as individual papers) that analyze and problematize the relations between the any and all communication media and various forms of spatial creativity, performance and production across material, cultural, social and political dimensions. The theme will be addressed through invited keynote talks, a plenary panel, film screenings and artistic installations. Participants are also encouraged to submit proposals for paper sessions addressing the conference theme. Spaces of the In-Between sheds light on how media are, and have been, part of producing spaces and places that fall in-between or resist dominant categorizations. Such spaces include, firstly, more or less fluid media spaces that bridge or problematize the divisions of, for example, work and leisure, home and away, production and consumption. Secondly, spaces of the in-between are produced through various forms of mobility, related to for instance commuting or migration, that are shaped by and giving shape to particular media forms. Finally, the conference theme highlights mediations of concrete places that can be understood as neither/nor. Such places can be found on the margins of society or fall in-between dichotomized geo-social constructs like urban vs. rural, front-stage vs. back-stage, etc. Ultimately, the conference theme opens up for critical discussions of what forms of power and domination are expressed through the mediated/mediatized production of various in-between spaces.

This special issue will present contributions from researchers who are investigating practices of intimacy mediated either wholly or in part through new media. In particular, it will focus on the methodological issues involved in conducting qualitative research in this flourishing field. A number of volumes published in the last decade have variously covered affect and methodology (e.g. Fraser and Puwar 2008; Pink 2009; Richardson 2005; Stage and Timm 2015), affect and new media (e.g. Chambers 2013; Garde-Hansen and Gorton 2013; Hillis at al 2015; Karatzogianni and Kuntsman 2012; McGlotten 2013; Paasonen 2011; Payne 2014; van Dijck 2013), or online methodologies (e.g. Hine 2000; Kozinets 2012; Markham and Baym 2009). This special issue builds on this existing body of scholarship and develops it further by narrowing the focus to methodological issues of research conducted on/with/through new media and specifically concerned with practices of intimacy. This special issue will zoom in on questions of method and methodology as they are experienced by researchers working at the cutting-edge of scholarship on intimacies and new media. It will share knowledge and experiences from the field, as well as proposing innovative methodological solutions and ideas on how to enter, survive and exit these highly charged fieldsites. Both personal experiences and reflections on current policies, procedures and paradigms will be welcomed. Researching intimacies encompasses a wide variety of practices and relationships, including but not limited to kinship, sexual encounters, body and gender, dis/abilities, migration, friendship, birth and death, romantic relationships, non-monogamies, dating or community formation. Each of these finds different forms in its mediatization. Simultaneously “new media” comprises a variety of digital platforms that offer distinctive ways to share, connect and communicate; differences in hardware and software intersect with situated sociocultural norms about technology use. The combination of intimate practices and new media thus poses challenges to existing methodological paradigms due to the limitations/affordances of the medium intersecting with continuously shifting practices of intimacy. This special issue will present a range of intimate practices as well as a selection of digital sites and apps. In so doing, a variety of different methodological issues will be highlighted and discussed. Suggestions for topics that contributors may wish to engage with include, but are not limited to: - Logistical and technical difficulties in collecting ephemeral or unstable personal data - Intimacy and loneliness of the researcher - Commercialization of online intimacies - The blurring of personal/professional lines of conduct as a researcher - The borderline between “lurking”, voyeurism and participation - Public intimacies in private spaces – accessing and exiting personal spaces as fieldsites - Technical glitches in online intimacies - The illusion of online anonymity or distance - Negotiating national differences in ethical guidelines for online collection of ”intimate” data - Tracking intimacies over time, space and media - Capturing and processing vast amounts of intimate data - Finding participants when the topic provokes shame, anger, or embarrassment - How multiple understandings of “intimacy” affect methodology - Sudden changes to fieldsites in response to public outcry/moral outrage - Adapting old methods to new and slippery fieldsites - Legal frameworks as intimate practices move between screen and materiality - Inclusion/exclusion mechanisms and accessibility We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines. The Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies has an open call for international resarch fellows who during a 3 month stay in 2017 conduct critical studies of digital and social media's role in society. The WIAS aims to contribute to bringing about a paradigm shift from big data analytics to critical digital and social media research methods and theories. Digital and social media research at WIAS uses and develops critical theories, is profoundly theoretical, and discusess the political relevance and implications of the studied topics. The WIAS’ Critical Digital and Social Media Studies Fellowship Programme is aimed at current and future research leaders, who engage in independent critical thinking. The KNAW (The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) has granted funding to Prof. Sandra Ponzanesi and Dr Koen Leurs. In December 2016, they will organise a KNAW Academy Colloquium entitled ‘Connected migrants: encapsulation or cosmopolitanism?’ with 16 international experts. The postcolonial and gender scholars will organise a two-day seminar and a one-day masterclass for advanced PhD students and emerging scholars. ENCAPSULATION AND COSMOPOLITANISM In our contemporary world, migrants should be considered as 'connected migrants'. More than ever before, migrants can chose between different technologies to be in contact with loved ones living in their country of origin. This colloquium will innovatively address how digital practices of migrants revolves around the dialectic of 'encapsulation' and 'cosmopolitanism'. Previously, scholars singled out one or another of these processes. 'Homophily', the assumption that 'birds of a feather flock together', is popular among those who argue that transnational communication hinders integration and leads to segregation and radicalisation. Scholars however also contend that migrants can be present in both their host society and their homeland . Seen this way, migrants can connect with their homeland and diaspora, forming bonding capital and developing bridging, cosmopolitan capital by connecting with their host society. Although contested, cosmopolitanism is indispensable as a 'grounded category' to capture everyday reflexive imaginations of openness between self, other and world among elite and subaltern subjects. This colloquium innovatively brings experts in the field together to acknowledge how boundary making and cosmopolitanisation operate simultaneously and grasps social, cultural and political implications of migrant digital practices as grounded in everyday practices.
