The meaning of AI has undergone drastic changes during the last 60 years of AI discourse(s). What we talk about when saying “AI” is not what it meant in 1958, when John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky and their colleagues started using the term. Take game design as an example: When the Unreal game engine introduced "AI" in 1999, they were mainly talking about pathfinding. For Epic Megagames, the producers of Unreal, an AI was just a bot or monster whose pathfinding capabilities had been programmed in a few lines of code to escape an enemy. This is not "intelligence" in the Minskyan understanding of the word (and even less what Alan Turing had in mind when he designed the Turing test). There are also attempts to differentiate between AI, classical AI and "Computational Intelligence" (Al-Jobouri 2017). The latter is labelled CI and is used to describe processes such as player affective modelling, co-evolution, automatically generated procedural environments, etc. Artificial intelligence research has been commonly conceptualised as an attempt to reduce the complexity of human thinking. (cf. Varela 1988: 359-75) The idea was to map the human brain onto a machine for symbol manipulation – the computer. (Minsky 1952; Simon 1996; Hayles 1999) Already in the early days of what we now call “AI research” McCulloch and Pitts commented on human intelligence and proposed in 1943 that the networking of neurons could be used for pattern recognition purposes (McCulloch/Pitts 1943). Trying to implement cerebral processes on digital computers was the method of choice for the pioneers of artificial intelligence research. The “New AI” is no longer concerned with the needs to observe the congruencies or limitations of being compatible with the biological nature of human intelligence: “Old AI crucially depended on the functionalist assumption that intelligent systems, brains or computers, carry out some Turing-equivalent serial symbol processing, and that the symbols processed are a representation of the field of action of that system.” (Pickering 1993, 126) The ecological approach of the New AI has its greatest impact by showing how it is possible “to learn to recognize objects and events without having any formal representation of them stored within the system.” (ibid, 127) The New Artificial Intelligence movement has abandoned the cognitivist perspective and now instead relies on the premise that intelligent behaviour should be analysed using synthetically produced equipment and control architectures (cf. Munakata 2008). Kate Crawford (Microsoft Research) has recently warned against the impact that current AI research might have, in a noteworthy lecture titled: AI and the Rise of Fascism. Crawford analysed the risks and potential of AI research and asked for a critical approach in regard to new forms of data-driven governmentality: “Just as we are reaching a crucial inflection point in the deployment of AI into everyday life, we are seeing the rise of white nationalism and right-wing authoritarianism in Europe, the US and beyond. How do we protect our communities – and particularly already vulnerable and marginalized groups – from the potential uses of these systems for surveillance, harassment, detainment or deportation?” (Crawford 2017) Following Crawford’s critical assessment, this issue of the Digital Culture & Society journal deals with the impact of AI in knowledge areas such as computational technology, social sciences, philosophy, game studies and the humanities in general. Subdisciplines of traditional computer sciences, in particular Artificial Intelligence, Neuroinformatics, Evolutionary Computation, Robotics and Computer Vision once more gain attention. Biological information processing is firmly embedded in commercial applications like the intelligent personal Google Assistant, Facebook’s facial recognition algorithm, Deep Face, Amazon’s device Alexa or Apple’s software feature Siri (a speech interpretation and recognition interface) to mention just a few. In 2016 Google, Facebook, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft founded what they call a Partnership on AI. (Hern 2016) This indicates a move from academic research institutions to company research clusters. We are in this context interested in receiving contributions on the aspects of the history of institutional and private research in AI. We would like to invite articles that observe the history of the notion of “artificial intelligence” and articles that point out how specific academic and commercial fields (e.g. game design, aviation industry, transport industry etc.) interpret and use the notion of AI. Against this background, the special issue Rethinking AI will explore and reflect the hype of neuroinformatics in AI discourses and the potential and limits of critique in the age of computational intelligence. (Johnston 2008; Hayles 2014, 199-210) We are inviting contributions that deal with the history, theory and the aesthetics of contemporary neuroscience and the recent trends of artificial intelligence. (cf. Halpern 2014, 62ff) Digital societies increasingly depend on smart learning environments that are technologically inscribed. We ask for the role and value of open processes in learning environments and we welcome contributions that acknowledge the regime of production as promoted by recent developments in AI. We particularly welcome contributions that are historical and comparative or critically reflective about the biological impact on social processes, individual behaviour and technical infrastructure in a post-digital and post-human environment? What are the social, cultural and ethical issues, when artificial neuronal networks take hold in digital cultures? What is the impact on digital culture and society, when multi-agent systems are equipped with license to act? Special Issue: Electronic Journal of Communication Journalism in The Age of Partisan Politics, Political Protests, and President Trump The current news environment is saturated with political tension and divisive issues. Legacy news media and contemporary news outlets race to publish compelling content as they struggle to maintain their audiences. Political leaks have become a staple of modern news. Journalists have found themselves covering ideologically charged protests involving immigration reform, Black Lives Matter, the KKK, environmental issues, and Civil War statues, while at the same time finding their authority and credibility challenged by persistent accusations of ethical violations, bias, and corruption. Meanwhile, social media sites provide an avenue for the public to present their own coverage and commentary related to all of these issues. Indeed, President Trump has turned toward social media as a way of presenting his own perspective on daily events. Further, online media and traditional news providers compete with the rumors, conspiracies, and “fake” news that permeates information space. Increasingly, social media readers fail to distinguish fabricated news from authentic news. This special issue will focus on journalism during this time of social upheaval and political partisanship. All theoretical and methodological perspectives are welcome. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutions in the capital city. Almost 1,000 employees are affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 8,000 students. The Faculty of Humanities consists of eight departments. Media and Culture encompasses film studies, cross-media culture as well as global media studies. Together these scholarly fields and programs offer a comprehensive and critical analysis with both theoretical and practice-based modes of inquiry concerned with audio-visual culture as well as online and digital culture both in the Netherlands and internationally. For the study of media and culture there are two main entry points. The first is the study of the culture of media, including practices of production, programming formats and media aesthetics. The culture of production is studied alongside that of consumption, especially engagement and agency of the spectator, viewer, user and navigator. Media production and consumption are continually changing and challenged with the advent of new media, where there are new mobile screens, media formats, users and cultures of commodification and control. The second entry point is the study of media in culture, from the contents of cinema, domestic and urban screens, to the software and apps on mobile devices and tablets. In the shift from informational to social media, online culture is increasingly shaping sociality through public displays of connection and taste. More specifically, media and culture takes up questions surrounding the cultural origins and effects of media, drawing on traditions ranging from media archaeology and genealogy to cultural studies, political economy and critical theory. Media theory, in all its medium-specific diversity remains central as do media research techniques widely applied across the curricula. Substantively, Film studies engages with the transformative shifts in both the materiality as well as the screening of cinema. Cross-media culture addresses the radical transformation of popular media, including television, in the age of mobility, second screens, participatory culture, and global distribution. Global media studies provides means by which film, television and new media may be compared across cultures and borders, and inquires into how the study of media allows us to access the dynamics of globalisation. The Media and Culture team consists of four professors: next to the chair of Cross-media culture, there are chairs in Film Studies, Digital Heritage and Globalisation. The other team in the department is Media and Information, containing chairs in Journalism, New Media and digital culture, Archival studies, Cultural information studies and Computational and Digital Humanities. Profile Contemporary social and cultural practices – from personal friendships to political election campaigns, from education to commercial forms of entertainment – are shaped by a matrix of different media and by the continuous transformation of media forms and media technologies. While TV – with its reality shows, spectacular live events, and transmissions of global catastrophes as well as its continuing offer of imported and home-made fiction series and characteristic forms of storytelling, – is still of major importance, its impact changes as it is augmented and partly replaced by social media, mobile phones, and ‘second screens’. Therefore it is paramount to understand the specific aesthetic, social, political and economic dynamics of different media and the way in which content and user practices travel across these media, provoking new connections and modifications. The professorship for Cross Media Culture is expected to stimulate and develop approaches from different disciplines, ranging from cultural studies to critical theory and from political economy to production studies. The professor is furthermore expected to actively participate in academic and public debates on the on-going transformation of media culture. The knowledge of the history and continuing relevance of film, radio and television will be the starting point to map the conceptual, social, and cultural changes that come with digital, mobile and social media. The Chair in Cross-media culture is expected to cover, both in teaching and research, several of the following topics: • the transformation of critical media theory in the context of institutional and technological changes in media landscapes (e.g. discussions around creativity, materialism, ecology, convergence); • the changing role of media institutions, new forms of mediated politics, and the growing importance of social media, continual technological shifts in content production, circulation and transformation; • the changing relationship between modes of media production, media aesthetics, and user practices. The professor is expected to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration with the film and new media sections of the Media Studies department, to expanding teaching and research links with public partners (such as EYE, Beeld en Geluid, Stedelijk Museum, City of Amsterdam), to expanding opportunities for students in practice-based learning and to developing new research and teaching initiatives. The professor in cross-media culture is expected to play an important role in both BA and MA teaching as well as PhD supervision, in particular in the television and cross-media culture track. In terms of research, this position has closest affinity with the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and the National Research School for Media Studies (RMeS), and, depending on the profile of the candidate, the Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies (ACGS). The theme is broadly rooted in the burgeoning implications of current massive global migrations of people and data, within the context of a growing materialist movement in cultural and media studies, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, feminist materialism, object oriented ontologies of post-humanist philosophy, critical political economy, actor-network theory, and the like. These heterogeneous and polyvalent perspectives have opened up spaces for interrogating the socio-technical assemblages which comprise “the internet”. The “material turn” within internet research seeks to firmly ground critical analyses in the manifold physicalities and corporealities embodied and engendered within such networked technologies. This turn has been embraced with enthusiasm in Canadian communication and media studies, whose intellectual tradition has been shaped by a productive confluence of medium theory (e.g., Marshall McLuhan), spatial materialism of communication systems (e.g., Harold Innis), feminist media and social justice theory (e.g., Gertrude J. Robinson, Dorothy Smith), and political economy of media institutions and practices (e.g., Vincent Mosco). As a settler nation with complex contested histories, vast geographies, and ongoing struggles to achieve global economic impact, Canada is situated firmly in the middle of the pack globally when it comes to internet presence. Like so many other nations, Canada’s transnational aspirations are deeply tied to its efforts to integrate and grow a diverse population. Such interconnected orientations are increasingly mediated by internet technologies. These interconnections are materialist in nature, but deeply transnational in both institutional and cultural construction. This leads us to the theme of the conference: transnational materialities. While providing a direction, this theme is not meant to be limiting, as the spaces within it allow for reflexivity, critique, construction, interpretation, and a myriad of other positionalities. We seek research and analysis that finds its provenance in a multiplicity of methodologies, from qualitative work such as textual analysis, to quantitative projects, such as big data, to mixed methods projects that employ both kinds of research. This may be of interest to some of you on the list. Citizen inquiry: Synthesizing science and inquiry learning has been recently published by Routledge. It is the first book of its kind to draw the emphasis on inquiry-based learningfrom participation in citizen science activities. This innovative edited volumeby Christothea Herodotou, Mike Sharples and Eileen Scanlon introduces theconcept of ‘citizen inquiry’ to emphasize the active engagement of the publicin citizen science activities, which refers to, not only participation in collectingor analysing data but also initiation, implementation, and completion ofpersonally meaningful scientific projects.
