From Big Data in Politics to the Politics of Big Data* A special issue for PArtecipazione e COnflitto (PACO) Guest Editors: Alice Mattoni and Elena Pavan *Call for Full Articles* This special issue aims to open a much-needed space for developing a critical and informed reflection on the multi-faceted nexus between Big Data and the study of political participation dynamics. It understands Big Data not solely in terms of large-scale datasets of textual or digital data that require us to tune our research practices. More radically, it starts from a conceptualization of Big Data as a complex set of cultural, political and scientific knowledge practices that challenge the traditional modes in which research questions are posed and framed, analyses are performed, as well as the ways in which results are communicated to the public and thus affect public discourse and debates. It also invites us to orient our attention towards emergent forms of activism reclaiming citizens’ agency towards the production, management and exploitation of (big) data, including - such as data activism, statactivism, data justice struggles, open data movements. Consistently, the special issue aims to provide a solid contribution towards the investigation of two interrelated aspects. On the one hand, it will engage with how Big Data are leveraging our understanding of participation and contentious dynamics within complex societies providing new methodological and informational resources to investigate structures, contents and mechanisms of citizens’ public engagement. On the other, it will contribute to develop a specific take on how Big Data become a contested research and political terrain characterized by strong power dynamics between private and public actors, and entwining with governance processes at all levels - from the national to the transnational one. Against this background, this special issue welcomes *full articles submissions* employing different theoretical, empirical and methodological approaches on Big Data, adopting a single-case or a comparative multinational and/or multiplatform perspective and exploring one or more of the following thematic areas: - Big Data, public opinion and institutional politics (party dynamics, political communications, etc.) - Big Data and the study of contemporary forms of collective action and unconventional political participation (social movements, digital activism, etc.) - Reflections on the epistemological and methodological implications and possibilities brought by Big Data in the study of political participation and contentious dynamics - Deconstructing and approaching critically datafication - Intersections between Big Data and governance processes. *Timeline*: *Submission of Full Articles: 10th March 2018* Provision of peer reviewed feedback: 15st May 2018 Submission of revised accepted articles: 19th June 2018 Publication of the Special issue: 15th July 2018 Articles should be no longer than 10,000 words, including notes and references. Many of us likely associate this phrase with Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in 2007. But there are clearly other candidates for the ”This,” e.g., the oncoming bioinformatics redesign of species or the fourth industrial revolution of artificially intelligent robots. But ”This” is also, without question, the greatest challenge of our age: climate change. Accordingly, the 13th Human Choice and Computers conference centers on the question: ICT and Climate Change - What Can We Do? The Conference invites both academics and practitioners in the field of ICTs and Society to take stock of their engagements, review their focus, and assess what and how each and every one of us might be able to contribute to the transformations needed (and already beginning) in local, regional, national and international contexts, towards becoming the diverse, environmentally and socially conscious, and thriving communities. We welcome submissions that speak directly and less directly to the conference theme. “This Changes Everything” implicates both climate change and the interrelated global challenges most central to the Working Groups of TC9 and its National Society representatives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research to use this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The consortium will be organized with 8 to 12 presentations by the students, whose applications have been selected by the Student Consortium chairs and potentially other reviewers. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along in their research that they can no longer make changes. The final version of accepted SC submissions will be included in the main conference proceedings published in the ACM DL. Complimentary/reduced conference registration will be available for students. Student Consortium participants will also be given high priority when applying for the student travel awards. Moreover, we are working to provide partial reimbursement of travel/accommodation expenses specifically for the participants of the Student Consortium. More information will come soon. Objectives The objectives of the student consortium are to: 1. Serve as a supportive setting to provide/receive feedback on students' current doctoral and masters' research and guidance on future research directions 2. Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from researchers and students outside of their own institution 3. Citation question: App Store Reviews Only on Mobile?

Hi AoIRistas, I'm curious if any of you have any sense of the proper way to cite a user comment in the iOS App Store? I'm working on the reception of an iOS app, and the web version of the page (the only version with a visible URL) only shows the first three comments. I'm digging pretty deep into the comments pile, and want to be able to offer proper citations to my readers. I don't remember this popping up in Joseph Reagle's book, though I imagine I'm not the first to confront the issue, and I am hopeful one of you has a solution. So.... Has anyone encountered (and perhaps overcome) the problem of citing comments only present via mobile app store with no obvious URL? Dear all, I am very pleased to announce the publication of my new book: Performing Digital Activism: New Aesthetics and Discourse of Resistance. (Routledge 2017) Description: From the emergence of digital protest as part of the Zapatista rebellion, to the use of disturbance tactics against governments and commercial institutions, there is no doubt that digital technology and networks have become the standard features of 21st century social mobilisation. Yet, little is known about the historical and socio-cultural developments that have transformed the virtual sphere into a key site of political confrontation. This book provides a critical analysis of the developments of digital direct action since the 1990s. It examine the praxis of electronic protest by focussing on the discourses and narratives provided by the activists and artists involved. The study covers the work of activist groups, including Critical Art Ensemble, Electronic Disturbance Theater and the electrohippies, as well as Anonymous, and proposes a new analytical framework centred on the performative and aesthetic features of contemporary digital activism. coding standards, suggestions for categorizing ethical frameworks in open-ended questionnaires?

Dear AoIRists, One of our MA students is attempting to (qualitatively) analyze responses to grief and mourning experiences on a major social media platform, especially as expressed or indexed in responses to open-ended questions (as part of a larger questionnaire). The student is attempting to discern what ethical frameworks, if any, come into play as suggested / evinced in the responses - e.g., more utilitarian, more care ethics, more virtue ethics, and so on. I think we can figure out a good way to look for and record responses along these lines - but of course, it's nicer if we don't have to reinvent a wheel or two that someone else has already developed and refined, etc. Any tips, tricks and suggestions along these lines would be very gratefully received.
