Pursue an active research agenda; produce a sustained record of research and publication in peer-reviewed journals and present peer-reviewed papers at conferences on a regular basis. Serve as liaison to the Brooklyn Public Library for IMLS Project "Librarians of Tomorrow" that connects teens with LIS education and careers (2018-2020). Digital platforms, often labelled as part of the ”sharing economy”, are becoming increasingly relevant to both the daily lives of private individuals and to the direction and operation of social and political systems. As these tools transform various communities (of interest, place, practice, and circumstance) to establish new forms of connection, welfare, labour, and service, there emerge fundamental questions around the perils of their design and use and the possibilities for thinking about fair alternatives. Two narratives on the sharing economy tend to dominate the current discourse. One group of accounts focuses on social innovation, creating more sustainable economic and environmental models in which sharing access to goods and services allows for a more efficient and sustainable utilisation of resources. The second group centres on the idea of market-focused digital innovation radically changing business models and generating economic activity, often threatening the working conditions of other social groups (e.g. Uber and the taxi drivers) or the texture of local communities (e.g. the effect of AirBnB on the rental market) . In both cases, a prominent role is played by platforms that seek to quantify collaborations for purposes of profit, labelled as platform capitalism by Snricek (2016). For example, likes and other emoticon-based responses to a Facebook post are often used as quantitative measure of the post's impact and success of engagement. Through algorithmic filtering, these become the measure of our affective, political, and cultural identities and guides for further design of our experiences on the platform. In fact, digital platforms are in essence connective and collaborative, creating a digital action point where multiple networks meet. These qualities have been enhanced through the development of on-site collaborative features. However, with the impact of venture capital in the market and increasingly driven by financial motives, many platforms have been adjusting their algorithms in order to commodify collaboration. Hence, novel forms of exploitation (of social relations as well as labour) have been established (van Dijck, 2013). Co-design, as well as other related domains of research and practice, such as Participatory Design and Computer Supported Cooperative Work, starts from a perspective where collaboration is valued for both its politics and what it can deliver, for instance, supporting emancipation of workers from the capitalist production process (Ehn, 1989). These approaches stress the importance of collaborative design and production of technologies, places, and services with a hopeful speculation that designing collaboratively will increase the impact and use value of the designed things and the quality of life for the people using them, in what is called “design for future use” (Ehn, 2008). It thus become relevant to ask how these approaches position themselves with regard to the challenges posed by platform capitalism, associated with commodification and quantification of collaboration. A possible direction could be placing attention on the commons (Ostrom, 1990; Hess and Ostrom, 2007) as collectively managed and shared resources, or the common (Hardt and Negri, 2009; Dardot and Laval, 2014) as the ensemble of the material and symbolic resources tieing together human beings. These concepts may be indeed central for the positioning of co-design and participatory design in the age of platform capitalism, especially for connecting with the original emancipatory intent of these design and research practices (Teli et al., 2017). Another direction may be the relationship that exists between the subjects involved in co-designing, and the object of the action. When this relationship manifests itself as structuring social relations, these relations can be referred to as a kind of care (Light and Akama, 2014). With this perspective, highly networked economic relations could leave behind the misleading narratives on the “sharing economy” promoted by platform capitalism, and engage in structuring a caring economy, oriented toward nurturing respectful and ever-transforming collaboration (Mol, Moser and Pols, 2010). The tension between commodification of collaboration and collaboration as productive in itself, considered as a basis for design and production, offers fertile ground to scholars, practitioners, and activists interested in co-designing practices of care for the common/s on different aspects. Digital Economies, Digital Connectivity, Digital Margins *Paper Sessions for the 5th Global Conference of Economic Geography in Cologne* <http://geonet.oii.ox.ac.uk/blog/cfp-for-sessions-at-gceg-digital-economies-…> (July 24-28, 2018) Mark Graham, Nicolas Friederici, Mohammad Amir Anwar, Sanna Ojanperä, Michel Wahome (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) People, places, and processes are becoming digital, digitised, and digitally-mediated at an astonishing pace. A majority of the world’s wealthy have long been connected, but it is the world’s poor and economically marginal that have only relatively recently been enrolled into digital networks. In 2017, for the first time in human history, over half of the humanity can be considered to be internet users. At the same time, hugely transformative changes are occurring in the global economy. First, an ever-increasing amount of economic value creation is affected by the digitisation of goods, processes and services. Second, places in every corner of the planet aspire to become centres of digital production and entrepreneurship. Our two sessions seek to bring together scholarship that directly addresses issues of changing connectivities and the effects that those changes have on, and in, economic margins (i.e., across the Global South or economic peripheries within the North). They seek to move beyond over-simplified narratives about whether digital tools and technologies are a panacea for development. Session I: Development, Entrepreneurship, and Inequality The first session hopes to bring together papers that explore the nuanced ways in which digital technology shapes opportunity and value creation in economic peripheries. In other words, the session wants to unpack the complex economic changes that digital connectivity has inflicted upon economic actors (people, organizations) and contexts (institutions, infrastructures, etc.) at global margins. Papers could address some of the following themes: - The contribution of digital connectivity to economic inequality (at any level) - Innovative ways to measure digital economies, especially local development effects - Changes to rural and urban economic geographies arising from digital connectivity - How value creation and digital production processes are anchored in peripheries - Interplay between analog and digital in value creation and entrepreneurship processes - Effects of digital technologies on clustering in peripheries - Processes and practices of digital entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems - The nature, origins, and roles of human capital and skills for digital entrepreneurship and production - Demographies and biographies of digital entrepreneurs and highly skilled freelancers Session II: Digital Labor and Production Networks Our second session seeks to bring together scholarship that directly addresses issues of changing connectivities and its effects on digital labour and production networks. We are defining digital labour to include a wide variety of work practices, which, both at individual and organisation-level, can be outsourced through the internet including but not limited to web development, graphic designs, software development, transcription, editing, article writing, proof-reading, data entry, virtual assistant, customer support, etc. This session hopes to bring together papers from a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives that explore the nuanced ways in which digital labour in economic margins is incorporated into the global production networks. In doing so, it aims to explore what the changing connectivities mean for economic geography of work and its implications on labour in economic margins, particularly for economic inclusion, exclusion, upgrading, downgrading, etc. Papers could address: - Divides and positionalities in digital or digitized value chains and production networks (incl. digital production and online labor) - The nature, origins, roles and formation of human capital and skills in digital labour - Demographies and biographies of digital workers, entrepreneurs, and freelancers - Articulation of previously disconnected labour forces into the global markets - Development implications of digital economies and connectivities on digital labour - New labour market segmentation, regulation, institutions, rural-urban [re]structuring of labour markets - Labour standards, social upgrading, labour control, alienation, workers’ agency, collective organisations and collective actions, etc. in new digital production networks Please submit your abstract directly through the GCEG website, any time between 15 November 2017 and 15 March 2018: https://www.gceg2018.com. About the Symposium: In many countries, not only in the developing world, governments are pushing for more control over the Internet. Censoring content is a growth industry, and Internet and social network shutdowns in response to civil protest and unrest are on the rise. Online surveillance is exploding and people are being increasingly intimidated or detained because of their online activities. Therefore it is vital for civil society and the media to work together in order to shape the Internet of the future and ensure it remains in the service of democracy. And the role of international media assistance needs to be reconsidered in this context. At the 2017 Symposium of the Forum Media and Development (FoME) in Berlin, journalists, media managers, media development specialists, activists, academics and representatives from government and private companies from around the world will discuss recent developments, strategies and next steps with a range of international experts in the fields of media development and Internet governance. The conference is an interdisciplinary gathering of social media researchers, practitioners, and analysts from around the world. The 2018 conference is hosted by the Centre for Business Data Analytics at the Copenhagen Business School. In 2012, in the wake of Occupy and the Arab Spring, the #SMSociety community explored networked influence and virality, and saw social media and viral events as a democratizing force. Fast forward five years and we find ourselves in quite a different, some would argue, darker social media landscape where those same democratizing forces are now being exploited in ways we could not foresee. With the rapid change on social media platforms and their affordances, the heightened emphasis on mobile and visual communication, the rise of bots, and the increased participation of state actors, we believe it is time to revisit the ideas of Networked Influence and Virality once more! Powered by networked influence and made possible by privately owned social media platforms, we are said to be in a sharing economy. We are now owning less and sharing more, giving and receiving crowdsourced content, adapting, innovating, remaking, and re-sharing original and remixed materials. New attitudes, practices, and legal precedents about ownership, rights, and information evaluation are emerging with the growing use of social media. The joys of sharing and connecting through social media-as amateur music videos inspire responses and the sharing of cute animal videos brings joy to millions-are tempered with concerns about the manipulation and exploitation of social media platforms. Hateful, anti-social speech, coordinated misinformation campaigns (i.e. "fake news") and "false flag" operation by actors unknown now dominate the news cycle and compete for an opportunity to "go viral." Considering the rapid changes in social media environments, use, and users, the conference organizers invite scholarly and original submissions that relate to the 2018 theme of "Networked Influence and Virality." We welcome both quantitative and qualitative work which crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media research.
