Successful candidates should demonstrate an innovative research and teaching agenda. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research to use this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The consortium will be organized with 8 to 12 presentations by the students, whose applications have been selected by the Student Consortium chairs and potentially other reviewers. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along in their research that they can no longer make changes. The final version of accepted SC submissions will be included in the main conference proceedings published in the ACM DL. Complimentary/reduced conference registration will be available for students. Student Consortium participants will also be given high priority when applying for the student travel awards. Moreover, we are working to provide partial reimbursement of travel/accommodation expenses specifically for the participants of the Student Consortium. More information will come soon. The book offers a novel way of looking at the tradition of political thought by reconstructing the historical media landscapes in which great political texts of the past were produced. It brings to light the little-charted media environments in which three political innovators— Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Karl Marx, and Fredrich Engels operated. It analyzes how those media environments shaped the three thinkers’ intellectual growth and how they used their media settings to communicate their groundbreaking ideas. The historical analysis is followed by a critical reflection on the future of political thought in the age of computer mediated communication. We Robot fosters conversations between those who research, design, or influence the legal and social structures in which robots operate and those that design, build, and deploy robots. We encourage contributions resulting from interdisciplinary collaborations, such as those between roboticists, legal, ethical, economic, social science and policy scholars. Qualified submissions include scholarly paper abstracts, detailed outlines of robotics demos, and expressions of interest in being a discussant. Other creative proposals are welcome. We Robot favors proposals (written scholarship and relevant demos) that are a collaboration between law/policy scholars and technologists.
