Previously organised by the Amsterdam-based Institute of Network Cultures, this fourth edition of MoneyLab brings together researchers, artists, designers, and cultural entrepreneurs thinking beyond money. Join panels, talks and workshops which inspect the borderlands between critical art-making, decentralised financial technologies, collective organisation, and civil disobedience. SCHEDULE 10:00 INTRODUCTION With *Geert Lovink* from Institute of Network Cultures and *Martin Zeilinger* from Anglia Ruskin University. 10:30 WORKSHOPS Offshore Investigation Vehicle with The Demystification Committee Half of the existing global wealth has been calculated to be located offshore, stacked in tax havens. But where is offshore? What does it mean to ‘go’ or ‘become’ offshore? Can we visit it? The Demystification Committee have infiltrated a number of tax havens and set up an international corporate structure to investigate offshore finance. At the head of this corporate structure is Empire Management Limited, a UK Private Limited Company that invites members of the public to become investors in their self-initiated offshore tax evasion scheme. Join in and explore the tactics Empire Management use to abuse its financial position offshore and find out about the murky world of offshore investment practices. Total Liquidity Now: Trading in the augmented landscape of Patternist PATTERNIST is a location-based, augmented reality demo game for urban research, sci-fi visions, and alternative economies. It speculates on the appearance of an alien planet hovering above our own, whose augmented terrain becomes visible through the lens of a mobile and desktop game. As part of this workshop participants are invited to develop the game’s trading mechanisms through role play and participatory exercises. Facilitating and experimenting with a multi-directional, barter-based trading system, the group will explore the alien geography of the PATTERNIST-3 planet. The workshop will close with a discussion on designing incentives in alternative economies, autonomous currencies, and market-based decision making. 12:00 DISCUSSION Playing to Lose: Gameplay in Art and Finance Artists are increasingly adopting game design as a methodology to interrogate and subvert complex financial and political systems. From simulations of fictional companies to live action role play games, a diverse range of situated methods are emerging to expose social and political infrastructures. This discussion will explore to what effects gamification and digital simulation are useful for organising socio-political activism. Is responsible, community-oriented life in contemporary society a ‘skill’ that can be learned in a game-like environment? If the performance of financial investments can be simulated, can we also simulate the disruption of capitalist systems? How can such simulation become reality? Chaired by journalist and campaigner Brett Scott with games designer Andy Morales Coto, developer Kei Kreutler, researcher Stephanie Polsky, and The Demystification Committee. 13:30 BREAK 14:15 WORKSHOPS Earth’s Cooperative for Economic Fairness with FairCoop FairCoop will present the world’s first democratically organised and eco-friendly crypto-currency, FairCoin. The latest FairCoin uses a co-operative model for distributing crypto-currencies and aims to create a digital currency for a new global economic system. Workshop participants will learn about the development of FairCoin, from the technical elements to the political and social motivations of creating an energy saving and cooperative blockchain. Find out how to setup a FairCoop in your region and how you could join a decentralized network to reduce economic inequality and create a global wealth of abundance for the commons. Data Workers Union with Institute of Human Obsolescence <http://speculative.capital/> In order to shift the imbalance between citizens,surveillance capitalism, and the big data industry, it should be understand that we are not merely users of free online services, but the unpaid workers of tech companies.The Institute of Human Obsolescence (IoHO) advocates for recognising the production of data as a form of labour.Through gatherings, assemblies and collective actions the union aims to establish a collective political discourse in pursuit of our data labour rights. This workshop will explore some of the issues that arise from organising a labour union for digital users and demonstrate the possibilities for monetizing online activity. 15:45 DISCUSSION Art and Equity? Tokenizing Culture with the Blockchain Artists are playing a central role in shaping our understanding of emerging blockchain technologies, and continue to propose exciting visions for how decentralized computation could challenge current social and political power structures. Already, there are a few experimental blockchain projects that question our core assumptions about ownership, authorship, reproducibility, and authenticity. This panel introduces artistic perspectives on distributed ledger technologies, and brings them into critical dialogue with the emerging blockchain economies. From platform distribution models and new types of digital art markets to hyper-real click-mine farms and self-owning artworks, what can we learn about emerging blockchain technologies from critical artistic practice? Chaired by artist and curator Ruth Catlow, with panellists including art advisor and art historian Jérôme Croisier, researcher and curator Rachel O'Dwyer and artist/software engineer Sarah Friend. 17:15 DISCUSSION 2nd MoneyLab Reader Book Launch with The Institute of Network Cultures <http://networkcultures.org/> Concluding the day, this session introduced by Inte Gloerich platforms contributors to this latest publication from the Institute of Network Cultures in Amsterdam and features a collection of essays from artists, academics and activists critically exploring art, finance and technology. This second edition expands on a global network committed to exploring the political and social territories created since the financial crash was inscribed onto the first bitcoin block in 2009. Essays range from the financialization of art, love as a binary proposition on the blockchain, the cashless society, the history of your financial dashboard, and the digital financial surveillance of the poor. Archives Unleashed: Call for Participation Web Data at Scale with the Archives Unleashed Toolkit: Web Archive Datathon Robarts Library, University of Toronto 26-27 April 2018 http://archivesunleashed.org/toronto/ Web Archives The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. Archives Unleashed Toolkit This event is tailored towards web archives practitioners and researchers. The Archives Unleashed datathon presents an opportunity for librarians, archivists, researchers, computer scientists, and others to collaboratively work with web collections and explore cutting-edge research tools through hands on experience. This event will bring together a small group of approximately 15 participants to experiment with the newest release of AUT (Archives Unleashed Toolkit) and the Archives Unleashed Cloud, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Participants will have access to analytics software and specialists, and will be exposed to the process of working with web archive files at scale. The scholarship on offer is for a candidate to complete a PhD on audience engagement with scholarly communication, working with data to assess the impact of science news sites like The Conversation (https://theconversation.com/au) on the public understanding of academic research. The scholarship is part of a funded Australian Research Council Linkage Project led by Professor Axel Bruns from the DMRC in partnership with The Conversation and the Cooperative Research Centres Association. Call for Papers Theorizing the Web 2018 April 27–28 in New York City At the Museum of the Moving Image, in Astoria, Queens Call for Papers Theorizing the Web 2018 April 27–28 in New York City At the Museum of the Moving Image, in Astoria, Queens The submission deadline is Sunday, February 4, 2018 (11:59 p.m. EST) Theorizing the Web is an event held annually since 2011 for critical, conceptual conversations about technology and society. We believe theory has a larger role to play in these conversations. Opposed to singular ideas, or datasets, or policy proposals — which are often used in relation to specific isolated problems — social theory addresses how ideas about new technologies intersect and relate, how they build, and how they are located within a deeper history of ideas. Here are some photos and videos from last year’s event if you want to see the vibe of it all. We support theorizing by academics and non-academics and value clear and compelling arguments that avoid jargon. We host thinking about technology by people who may not think of themselves primarily as “tech” thinkers. Activists, journalists, technologists, writers, artists, and people who don’t identify as any of the above are all encouraged to submit. We especially invite submissions that engage with issues of social justice, power, inequality, and vulnerability from a diverse range of perspectives. Submissions on any topic are welcome. Some general topical suggestions include the relationship between technology and identity, privacy, sexuality, gender, intimacy, the body, power, politics, surveillance, racism, sexism, ableism, class, harassment, space, chaos, design, discourse, knowledge, images, memes, attention, work, fiction, gaming, globalization, capitalism, and protest. Submissions should be 300 to 500 words (only the first 500 words will be reviewed). The TtW Selection Committee will blindly review submissions and make decisions in mid to late February. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their work to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The strongest candidates will be those have made some progress, but who are not so far along their research that they can no longer make changes. Typically this means that they have defined their topic and have completed some research, but still have at least a year of research remaining before completing a dissertation (in many universities this corresponds to the dissertation proposal stage). The feedback from attendees in previous years has been very positive and the Doctoral Symposium has been considered very useful in providing research guidance. The symposium has the following objectives: 1. Provide a supportive setting for feedback on students’ current research and guidance on future research directions. 2. Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from faculty and students outside their own institution. 3. Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research. 4. Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers and conference events. Student participants will have their extended abstracts (4 pages excluding references) published in the conference proceedings. They will also have the opportunity to present a poster of their work SYMPOSIUM FORMAT AND PARTICIPATION EXPECTATIONS o At the Symposium Participants are expected to attend the entire symposium, including the dinner, and are also expected to attend the ACM RecSys 2018 conference. Accepted participants will receive travel support for the RecSys 2018 conference directly from the ACM. The format of the symposium will be primarily student presentations supplemented by one or two panel sessions to provide advice and Q&A opportunities with senior researchers in the field. Student presentations will be structured to provide maximum feedback. In particular: o Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes, followed by 20-25 minutes for feedback and discussion; o Two of the symposium faculty will be assigned to provide “primary” feedback for each presenter; following this primary feedback there will be a period of open feedback from all participants; o Students will be expected to take notes for another participant so that each of you can focus on interacting during the discussion surrounding your presentation; o During the main conference, you will also present your dissertation work and plans in the form of a poster presentation. Being accepted into the symposium is an honor, and involves a commitment to giving and receiving thoughtful commentary with an eye towards shaping the field and upcoming participants in the research area. APPLICATION FORMAT AND SUBMISSION Applications are invited from graduate students pursuing a PhD project who would benefit from detailed workshop discussions of their doctoral research by a panel of established researchers. Applications should include the following: 1. An extended abstract (see below). 2. A curriculum vitae. 3. A one-paragraph statement of expected benefits of participation, including questions regarding your dissertation that you would like to ask your symposium mentors. Submit these three items in a single PDF file to doctoral2018(a)recsys.acm.org[BS2] . Your contribution should be named lastname_ds.pdf, where lastname is your family name. The file must be no larger than 5 Mbytes. 4. A brief letter of recommendation from your doctoral advisor or mentor focused on how your participation in the doctoral symposium will benefit your dissertation research. Your doctoral advisor should send this letter directly to us at doctoral2018(a)recsys.acm.org. Extended Abstract Prepare a four-page (excluding references) extended abstract of your thesis work in the two-column ACM SIG Proceedings Format. The extended abstract will be evaluated with regard to: 1. Originality of the work with respect to current concepts and techniques (provide relevant citations). 2. Importance of the work with respect to fundamental issues in recommender systems (clearly identify the problems you are trying to solve). 3. Rigor and validity of claims, argumentation, methodology, results, and interpretations. 4. Clarity and persuasiveness of expression. Please write your extended abstract to the same quality standards as a regular RecSys submission. The accepted extended abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings and available in the ACM Digital library, where they will remain accessible to thousands of researchers and practitioners worldwide. Confidentiality Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until two weeks prior to the start of the conference. Submissions should contain no information or materials that are proprietary at publication time. Selection Criteria To provide maximum feedback to each student, participation in the doctoral symposium is limited to no more than 8 doctoral students. Selection is based on two broad criteria: o Value of the symposium to the student: o The degree to which the applicant is positioned to benefit from participation, including the student’s position in the doctoral process (the greatest benefit is for students with a developed research idea but much of the work yet undone). o The degree to which the student may otherwise lack access to a diverse set of feedback and input on his or her research plans (e.g., availability of local experts and advisors). o Value of the student’s participation to other students. o The quality of the extended abstract (as identified above), both as a model of excellent research and as an indication of the student’s potential in the field. o Diversity of participation, including diversity by institution, country, research topic and approach, and demographics. In general we will limit participation to one or two students per institution, depending on the number of applicants. o Evidence that the student will be an effective and active participant, providing feedback to others and helping to build a research network. APPLICATION CHECKLIST Well in advance of the deadline: 1. Create your submission materials: 1. Write an extended abstract according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Format. The abstract must print to no more than 4 pages (excluding references). 2. Write a curriculum vitae. 3. Write a one-paragraph statement of expected benefits of participation. 2. Package all materials into a single PDF file. Name it according to the following convention: lastname_ds.pdf. Submit it to doctoral2018(a)recsys.acm.org. 3. Test that your PDF prints correctly and that is it no larger than 5 Mbytes. 4. Confirm that your advisor has sent a letter of recommendation.
