In the world of pervasive Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this context is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative learning, taking into consideration the individual differences between learners. This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way through social interaction with other learners. The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers, educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent learning environments. The proposed field is interdisciplinary and very dynamic, taking into account the recent advent of Web 2.0 and ubiquitous personalization, and it is hoped to attract a large audience. I am happy to announce my book "ComMODify; User creativity at the Intersection of commerce and community" (Palgrave) - Provides empirical analyses of user design capabilities within the online virtual world Second Life - Uses game modding as a conceptual focus - Investigates the 'participatory turn' of digital technologies This book critically analyses user-firm technology relationships and socioeconomic structures at the crossroads of community and commerce. It investigates businesses that let users participate in platform development on the internet. An empirical study of the online world Second Life is used as an early illustration of the pivotal role of user participation in design, development and sustainability of digital platforms. Incidental findings policies for internet research

Have any of you had to write an incidental findings policy for a research ethics review? The ERC wants this for the ethnographic part of a project where involving fieldwork and interviews with people doing cell phone photography in order to understand everyday use of machine vision (e.g. algorithmic image filters, image recognition algorithms etc). The literature I've found on "incidental findings" is mostly medical - if you're doing brain imaging to understand ADHD and discover a brain tumour, that’s an incidental finding and you need to have a policy for what to do. This kind of incidental finding is extremely unlikely for an ethnography of internet photographers. If this is all the ERC means, I can probably just say there is little risk of incidental findings that affect the informants’ medical or psychological well-being. The exception would be if a research participant appeared to be suicidal, which certainly could happen – Terri Senft describes this exact thing in her book Camgirls: Celebrity and Community in the Age of Social Networks (2008). So what is a good way to craft a policy for a researcher who suspects an informant is suicidal? And are there other health/well-being related incidental findings that internet researchers should consider? More complicatedly, my university research ethics advisor also suggests I should have a policy for what to do if the researcher is looking through a participant’s social media feed or photos on their camera roll with them and sees child pornography or evidence of a crime – or if they see something problematic while doing fieldwork in an online forum or at a meetup. Should this be reported to the police? Or should one protect the informant? And where does one draw the line? The suggestion from my university is "In the informed consent form all informants will be informed about the researcher’s obligations to report issues of misconduct" - but this seems obviously far too broad, "misconduct" can mean almost anything. Perhaps actual crimes should be reported though. Though heck, reporting seeing a photo of someone smoking a joint or something seems rather different from finding child pornography in a feed. The purpose of the research in this case is NOT to understand any kind of crime or "misconduct", but to understand the ways we understand, use and are affected by algorithmic images and machine vision. The AoIR ethics guidelines (https://aoir.org/reports/ethics2.pdf) don’t mention these situations, though they include so many other useful considerations. I haven't found ANY literature citing reports on “misconduct” or crimes as related to incidental findings, although it's probably a good idea to have a policy if this kind of situation were to crop up. I know ethnographers have thought about these things for ages and written about them too - but maybe not as an "incidental findings policy"? Does anyone here have knowledge they could share? Special issue: The Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction Topic overview Studies in human-robot interaction have shown that, when robots enter different contexts of our everyday lives, they influence and change those contexts beyond their intended use purpose alone. Social scientists have referred to this process as “mutual shaping” of technology and society. Mutual shaping implies that technological and societal developments do not proceed in parallel, or in a linear progression from technological development to societal application, but rather that technology and society continuously influence and (re)shape each other. Society changes as a direct and indirect result of the implementation of technology, which itself is created based on society’s (or a particular segment of society’s) wants, needs, beliefs, and practices. The mutual shaping of technology and society approach focuseson analyzing how social and cultural factors influence the way technologies are designed, implemented , used, and evaluated, as well as how technologies affect our construction of social values and meanings. Call for Papers The aim of this special issue is to collect an overview of theoretical and empirical state-of-the-art research contributions on lessons learned about the mutual shaping of robots and society. Therefore, theInternational Journal of Social Robotics invites researchers from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with the development and evaluation of robot systems (e.g. human-robot interaction, human-computer interaction, human factors, engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, communication science, anthropology, psychology, etc .) to submit to this Special Issue. Dear Colleague - The Digital Government Society invites e-government researchers and government practitioners to submit proposals for panel discussions on topics of your choice at the 19th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research in 2018. The conference takes place from May 30 - June 1, 2018 and is sponsored by Delft University of Technology in Delft, the Netherlands. This year's conference theme is "Governance in the Data Age." Panel proposals addressing a wide variety of topics are welcome, including (but not limited to): big data; social media; open government and open data; citizen participation and engagement; artificial intelligence in the public sector; policy informatics; data analytics; smart technologies at all levels of government; issues of equity related to digital government and technology use; crisis and disaster response; blockchain technology; and the sharing economy and the public sector. Proposals for panels should be 2-4 pages long and include: information about the theme and goals of the panel, a summary of the digital government issues or questions that the panel will address, statements about the value of the discussion to conference attendees, and how well suited the topic is to a panel discussion.
