Carey Media Research Award 2018 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center invites nominations or self nominations for works to be considered for its annual James W. Carey Media Research Award. Welcome are works on topics that were central to Carey's scholarship. Submissions might focus on technology, time & space and communication, the nature of public life, the relation between journalism and popular culture – among others – taking these themes in new or different directions. Applications will be evaluated based on engagement with Carey's approaches and concepts, originality, and advancement of knowledge. I've seen it mentioned in a few calls for papers here but I wonder if any of you might be able to point me toward work you've done that has engaged with the idea. Third call for proposals Workshop at the conference Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries 7 March 2018 at the University of Helsinki This workshop seeks to expand critical perspectives on metadata in relation to public cultural heritage image collections online. In our image-saturated time, the definition of therticipatory online practices such as crowdsourcing enable cultural heritage institutions to accelerate the development of digi also be seen as platforms for audience engagement, creating a deep connection to cultural heritage through online collaboration. Furthermore, open data and enhanced standards enabling interoperability might support new forms of collaboration between institutions, researchers, and the general public. However, these participatory open science practices create new challenges due to the character of the networked publics involved and the established structures between and within institutions, but also new opportunities and practices when it comes to understanding and defining our shared images. Therefore, critical perspectives on metadata in relation to photographic collections online are vital. This calls for an interdisciplinary approach in the intersection between computer science, image studies, and cultural studies. For this workshop, therefore, we invite participants to look more closely at different types of participatory practices online in relation to the cultural heritage domain, and at different levels of interaction. Possible sites of analysis could be the interaction between participants, the participation in the work by different stakeholders, the potentially privileged levels of interaction with the metadata, or tensions in the agency of the participants in relation to the task. This half-day workshop explores the topics in mini presentations and brainstorming sessions, and will result in a research agenda for addressing these questions. The position-paper should be 2-4 pages and using the Springer LNCS templates. Call for Papers 10th International ACM Web Science Conference 2018 27-30 May 2018 at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands Paper due February 11, 2018 The 10th International ACM Conference on Web Science in 2018 (WebSci’18) is a unique conference where a multitude of disciplines converge in a creative and critical dialogue with the aim of understanding the Web and its impacts. WebSci’18 welcomes participation from diverse fields including (but not limited to) art, anthropology, computer and information sciences, communication, economics, humanities, informatics, law, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. We particularly welcome contributions that seek to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. We are seeking papers that describe original research, analysis, and practice in the field of Web Science, as well as work that discusses novel and thought-provoking ideas and important research-in-progress. Reviewing will be single-blind (authors are identified on submissions; reviewers are anonymized). To accommodate the distinct traditions of Web Science’s many disciplines, we allow for two different paper submission formats: full papers and short papers. Full papers are up to 8-10 pages long, ACM double column. Full papers should present new and substantial theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Full papers include an abstract, an introduction, sections and especially significant conclusions and should be well on top of the current literature in the field as evidenced by appropriate referencing. Full papers should be original work that has not been previously published. Full papers are presented through regular talks. The program committee may decide to recommend full papers that were rejected as such to be accepted as short papers, if the authors agree. Short papers are 3-5 pages long, ACM double column. Short papers should present new ideas and/or work in progress that may have significant impact to or implications for the progress of the Web and Web Science. Short papers should include an abstract, an introductory paragraph and appropriate references. Short papers should be original work that has not been previously published.
