CALL FOR Phd Research Papers The Ninth International Conference on the Applications of Digital Information and Web Technologies (ICADIWT 2018) June 25-27, 2018 Porto, Portugal http://www.socio.org.uk/icadiwt ICADIWT Doctoral Consortium 2018 ICADIWT 2018 will feature a Doctoral Consortium on June 26, 2018. The main idea is to give the Ph.D. candidates whose submissions have been accepted, an opportunity to discuss their doctoral projects with our Keynote Speakers from the digital and web technologies and the audience. Attendance at the Doctoral Consortium will be based on the Doctoral Consortium PC acceptance of a 6-page long abstract authored by the Ph.D. Candidate. The accepted abstracts will be presented in the ICADIWT 2018 Poster Session and published online together with a full 12 pages long paper that the Ph.D. Candidates will have to submit by (date). The paper will be reviewed by our PC and the Keynote Speakers who will attend the Doctoral Consortium to give the Ph.D. Candidates a feedback about their work. Dear AoIR community, The deadline for proposals for the 10th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research (ICCPR) was extended to *February 5th*, 2018. The conference will be hosted by Tallinn University. The theme refers to the emergence of complex global flows that present contemporary societies with novel challenges and have high relevance for shaping but also understanding cultural policy in the making worldwide. These include forced as well as unforced migrations; new global divisions in cultural labour; cultural tourism; novel forms of content distribution; emergent international networks and platforms enabling cultural exchange; global trade with (big) data on cultural practices; and attempts of reimagining and re-evaluating shared values, to name some. The conference expects to address not only the present situation and future strategies but invites investigations into the archaeologies and histories of contemporary flows and into past ways of addressing related challenges with cultural policies in different regions of the world. CfP: Media and networks from below: amateurs, users, and marginal groups - Padova 24-26 June 18 Call for papers MEDIA AND NETWORKS FROM BELOW: AMATEURS, USERS, AND MARGINAL GROUPS Deadline: 10.02.2018 Track of the 7th STS Italia Conference to be hosted at the University of Padova, Italy, June 14 - 16, 2018, by the Italian Society of Science and Technology Studies, in collaboration with the FISPPA Department and the University of Padova. Networks play an essential role in media development. To counter the semantic and theoretical dominance of the histories of particular technologies and include them in a broader social context, the historian Andrew Russell has recently raised the need for a deeper understanding of the plural histories of networking. Notably, the term network, far from being just confined to digital media, refers to a variety of media and communication technologies in their convergence and interdependencies, such as telegraphy, wireless, radio, telephony, broadcasting, and ITs. Besides the leading role of private companies and national monopolies, various local, national and transnational networks from below participated and are still contributing to the development and the cultural representation of media and communication technologies. Amateurs, activists, hackers, hobbyists are just some examples of how a variety of networks from below have played a key role in shaping the past and present of media. These networks developed in different forms, from ones around particular political institutions to the local clubs in the garages. Different motivations drove them: to share the knowledge and joy of using the technology, to serve the nation by spreading the information, to suggest an alternative way of media governance, etc. Besides technical networks, different forms of social networks contributed to the development, the appropriation and the dissemination of media and communication technologies over time. This track session aims at gathering and putting into dialogue scholars and specialists coming from different experiences and case studies dealing with networks from below. Dear AoIRists, What are your thoughts regarding the following? A research project involves a small number of students, legally minors - and requires that they set up fake FB accounts for the sake of role-playing in an educational context? Of course, fake accounts are a clear violation of the FB ToS. I know we've discussed the ethics of researchers doing this (with mixed results, i.e., some for, some concerned). But I'm curious what folk think / feel about this version of the problem.
