The Place I Call Research: Localizing Sociological Inquiry The University of Manchester, June 15, 2018 Call for Papers Despite the recent focus in social sciences on situating one’s research, the actual process of selecting and navigating particular community contexts remains a difficult task. The reconfiguring of local spaces into sites of research is particularly relevant now, as the internet and new media blur previously taken-for-granted boundaries and processes of localization. This conference seeks to engage researchers across the social sciences and humanities to discuss the role of places in their work. In particular, we are interested in exploring the ways in which methodologies are contextualized to tackle both new spaces and ‘old’ spaces in the flux of change. However we are also attentive to the interaction between researchers and the larger community regarding those spaces, such as public policy development that is contextually bound and the impact of business models in the alteration and creation of places. The conference will take place at the University of Manchester on 15 June 2018. It is an all-day event which will feature both academic papers and public events including a roundtable with community members, a public screening, and an exhibition. Attendance is free. We welcome submissions for 15 minute papers from doctoral and masters’ students and early-career researchers across multiple disciplines, especially sociology, anthropology, economics, politics, geography, public health, and cultural studies. Some of the conference’s key themes are: - new and old spaces: queer, postcolonial and online contexts - addressing changing political and social contexts in our research - urban/rural dichotomies - place ownership, no-place, and homelessness - how social, cultural, and community challenges affect fieldwork - developing community-specific methodologies and research questions - how theories and knowledges are context-specific, as well as the potential for trans-contextual research Abstract submissions should be between 150 and 300 words and include five keywords. Creative research methodologies are welcomed. Scholars are encouraged to reflect on local engagement in their papers. This relationship entails different forms of meeting: disciplinary, epistemological, institutional, and local alliances. Long abstract The increasing prominence of critical approaches - e.g. feminist and postcolonial STS - and the intersections with surrounding fields - e.g. participatory design, information science, and critical technical practice - have stressed the politically engaged character of STS, emphasizing its "activist interest" (Sismondo, 2008). Such growing interest in collaborative modes of practicing STS has suggested the emergence of a "collaborative turn" in STS (Farías, 2017). This panel wants to focus on such collaborative orientation of STS by exploring its interplay with the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This relationship entails diverse forms of meeting such as the disciplinary intersection of STS with design studies and information science; the epistemological meeting between STS and critical perspectives; the making of new alliances between researchers, activists and local population; the convergence of institutional interests and research practices to promote alternative sociotechnical infrastructures. This panel seeks interdisciplinary contributions that explore the politics in and of the relationship between STS and ICT, from experiences of local and community activism to large-scale examples of alternative sociotechnical infrastructures. Best wishes Abstract Submission Deadline: March.31 2018 Conference Description: http://www.chinamediaobs.org/ecrea-preconferece-��new-silk-road��-flow-an… The ��New Silk Road��, or in the Chinese official discourse, the ��Belt & Road initiative�� (formerly called One Belt One Road һ��һ·) was launched in 2013 with a confirmed concrete interest from Beijing to reconnect China with Europe and to establish different levels of cooperation with European partners. It has been widely recognized by the West as the Chinese president Xi Jinping��s global ambition of centralizing China as the leading force for the World Economy and Globalization as well as China��s greater expansion of Soft Power. So far, discussions about the New Silk Road and its relationship with Europe (i.e. European Union) have been mainly conducted in the field of political (Casarini, 2015; var der Putten and all, 2016, Fardella, 2016) and economic (Aoyama, 2016; Chen, 2016, Lin, 2015) studies. Much less attention has been paid from the media and communication perspective, despite the increasing importance of a better mutual understanding between different European and Chinese stakeholders on different levels under the Belt & Road framework. This preconference is designed to fill in this gap by bringing scholars in media, communication and culture studies to join the discussion about the ��New Silk Road�� from Europe and China. On one hand, it recalls to the ancient Silk Road that initiated the first flow of communication and exchange in goods and culture between the Roman and Chinese empires. On the other hand, it opens windows for discussions on the current flow of a mix of acceptance��resistance, cooperation��dispute, and agreement��disagreement related to the New Silk Road between the two continents. If in 120 BCE the flow of information was launched in the West (Europe), at the present stage it starts from the East (China). We believe that this specific topic will contribute to the main theme of ECREA 2018 by providing a contribution to frame Centers (from Europe focus to China focus) and Peripheries. CMO is the ideal institution to host this preconference, it is one of the few research center in Europe to focus its studies on Chinese media system systematically. Moreover, CMO it is part of the Institute of Media and Journalism at USI, Faculty of Communication Sciences, the only faculty in Switzerland to provide an interdisciplinary education, which blends the humanities, the social sciences, economics, and technology. We encourage research submission from (and not limited to) European research centers with a specific interest on Chinese media and also Chinese institutions with a research interest on Europe. We are also open to evaluating studies with interdisciplinary approaches and developed by scholars at their first stage, with a particular reference to the YECREA network. We expect to host a total of 25-30 attendees including scholars and experts interested in the topic. Since 2006 CMO has been active to improve the academic dialogue between Europe and China also at the PH.D. level thanks to its Europe-China Dialogue: Media and Communication Studies Summer School. We plan to publish a special issue based on the best paper presented at the conference on the journal Communication and the Public published both in English and Chinese. This one-day workshop will be co-located with CHI 2018, a premier venue for innovations through academic-practitioner interactions, and it will bring together researchers interested in time-bounded events, experienced event organizers, and individuals interested in running their own events in the future. Refugee & Forced Migration HCI Research: Help Request

Dear AOIR Community, We are a group of interdisciplinary HCI researchers focusing on the technology related issues of people experiencing forced migration, such as refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced, and the undocumented. This year at the ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work (GROUP) we came together in a workshop called, ‘Refugees & Technology: Determining the Role of HCI Research’, links below. As a result of this workshop we would like to build a curated list of scholarly resources that support generative and ethical research in the area of Forced Migration - HCI studies. We intend to make this list publicly available in order to support this growing research area. We are asking for your help! If you know of HCI-related refugee or forced migration work, or other resources that you think could inform and support this work, could you send us the citation or link? We are happy to announce the publication of the Popular Communication 16(1) special issue on Connected migrants, edited by Koen Leurs & Sandra Ponzanesi Issue description: This special issue features digital migration research as first presented during the Connected Migrants Academy Colloquium and Masterclasses that took place December 14–16, 2016, at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Taking a cue from Dana Diminescu’s seminal manifesto on “the connected migrant,” this special issue introduces the notions of encapsulation and cosmopolitanism to understand digital migration studies. The pieces here present a nonbinary, integrated notion of an increasingly digitally mediated cosmopolitanism that accommodates differences within but also recognizes Europe’s colonial legacy and the fraught postcolonial present. Of special interest is an essay by the late Zygmunt Bauman, who argues that the messy boundaries of Europe require a renewed vision of cosmopolitan Europe, based on dialogue and aspirations, rather than on Eurocentrism and universal values. In the introductory article, we focus on three overarching discussions informing this special issue: (a) an appreciation of the so-called “refugee crisis” and the articulation of conflicting Europeanisms, (b) an understanding of the relationships between the concepts of cosmopolitanization and encapsulation, and (c) a recognition of the emergence of the interdisciplinary field of digital migration studies.
