CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2018 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. The Institute of Network Cultures proudly presents the Second MoneyLab Reader, Overcoming the Hype. MoneyLab is a network of artists, activists, and geeks experimenting with forms of financial democratization. Entering the 10th year of the global financial crisis, it still remains a difficult yet crucial task to distinguish old wine from its fancy new bottles. Founded in 2013, the MoneyLab network questions persistent beliefs, from Calvinist austerity, growth, and up-scaling, to trustless, automated decision making and (anarcho-)capitalist dreams of cybercurrencies and blockchained solutionism. We consider experiments with digital coops, internet-based payment and network-based revenue models as spaces of political imagination, with an equally important aesthetic program. The School of Media, Film and Music in collaboration with the Sussex Humanities Lab (SHL) wish to appoint to a fixed term Research Fellow to support a major AHRC funded research project: BBC Connected Histories. The project will create a digital oral history archive reflecting the inside story of the Corporation. Funded for five years and led by Professor David Hendy, BBC Connected Histories will create a fully searchable resource, incorporating extensive tagging and Linked Open Data, from interviews with staff held in the BBC’s oral history collection, dating from the early 1970s onwards, and reflecting the experience of employees going back to the founding of the Corporation in 1922. Dear colleagues, Along with my AoIR Ethics Working Group co-chairs, Charles Ess and Anja Bechmann, I am excited to announce the Web Science 2018 Ethics Workshop: “Confronting Ethical Challenges in Web Science Research“, scheduled for Sunday 27 May 2018 at VU Amsterdam. https://websci18ethicsworkshop.wordpress.com/ This half-day workshop, organized by the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Ethics Working Group in partnership with the PERVADE: Pervasive Data Ethics project, will foster community engagement with the ethical challenges faced by web science researchers working with big data sources, including from social media platforms, health apps, internet of things, and related pervasive data sets. The growing prevalence of data-rich networked information technologies, such as the internet of things, wearable devices, ubiquitous sensing, and social sharing platforms, brings a similar increase in the flow of rich, deep, and often identifiable personal information. These data flows— across devices, platforms, and between users—are increasingly available to computational and web science researchers to capture and process to discover new insights about how all these domains intersect. The growth in the scale, scope, speed, and depth of data-intensive computational activities, however, requires that we continuously confront the ethical frameworks and assumptions that guide web science research agenda now, and in the future. The Web Science 2018 Ethics Workshop builds on substantive lessons learned and insights gained from recent workshops organized by the AoIR Ethics Working Group in Aarhus, Denmark, Tartu, Estonia, and Oslo, Norway. ---- “Grand Visions” for Post-Capitalist HCI - CHI 2018 Workshop Montréal, Canada, Saturday 21st April 2018. Submission deadline: 2nd February 2018. http://hci.post-capitalist.com ---- This workshop aims to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners to explore an alternative, post-capitalist, “grand vision” for HCI, primarily asking what kind of futures the community sees itself as working towards. Much in the tradition of design fiction or experiential futures at CHI, all attendees at the workshop will engage in the design and prototyping of diegetic objects that help us suspend our disbelief about a future society. At the same time, the prototypes generated during the workshop will embody each other’s ideas and, in turn, facilitate presentation and discussion. Importantly the focus of the workshop is on things not words – it is not a space to debate philosophies of post-capitalism and HCI, but a space to speculatively design technology which demonstrate these ideas. We welcome one of two formats of submission: * A two-page ACM Extended Abstract format position paper or * A short video submission (2-4 minutes) along with a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Both submission formats should outline the authors’ motivations, ideas and potential designs for the workshop. Examples of topics include: tools to enable greater civic participation, technologies and systems to remove corporate/financial influence, how fully automated luxury communism might work, tools to suppress the rise of capitalism, disrupting the marginalisation of vulnerable populations, approaches to encourage communism and the emancipation of big data. We ask the authors to indicate how many authors will attend the workshop as places are limited. All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI conference. We welcome submissions for 15 minute papers from doctoral and masters’ students and early-career researchers across multiple disciplines, especially sociology, anthropology, economics, politics, geography, public health, and cultural studies. Some of the conference’s key themes are: - new and old spaces: queer, postcolonial and online contexts - addressing changing political and social contexts in our research - urban/rural dichotomies - place ownership, no-place, and homelessness - how social, cultural, and community challenges affect fieldwork - developing community-specific methodologies and research questions - how theories and knowledges are context-specific, as well as the potential for trans-contextual research Abstract submissions should be between 150 and 300 words and include five keywords.
