Best Regards, Magda Zdrodowska ************************************************************ ****************************************************** ***************************************** *Call for Papers for 2018 vol.3, issue 1 * *Film and Media: Through and Beyond the Senses* *Editors: Małgorzata Radkiewicz, Marta Stańczyk (Jagiellonian University, Poland) * Both theory and practice of film and media deal with such issues as perception, interaction, and involvement through human body and senses. Contemporary theory has turned toward embodiment as a major “figure of thought” and as the main mode of cognition. However, approaching visual culture and its various devices (analogue, electronic, digital ones) only through senses may not be sufficient in the era of post-humanity and dynamic technological development. Moreover, hybridization and specialization of media bring up questions and challenges that make us go beyond human senses and their limitations. There are new possibilities of creation and usage of film and media, as well as of analysis and interpretations, in terms of new materialism, affects, ecology etc. The new phenomena of media communication must be followed by both analytical and critical theoretical reflections that will address complex issues of relations between media and (non)human sensual organs. The annual NECS conference that took place in June 2017 addressed the topic: Sensibility and the Senses. Media, Bodies, Practices. The program included diverse perspectives and subjects of research, showing different attitudes and exploring various fields of studies. Many of them still need to be explored and examined in detail, which poses a huge challenge for researchers dealing with film and various media. Preparing the next issue of “TransMissions”, we invite you to submit papers that might examine such topics as: - Theoretical approaches to sensual perception and sensory experience of film and media; - The relation between body and technologies; - Human and nonhuman aspects of hybrid media; - An immersion and a realist theory (hyper cinema, AR, VR, 3D, etc.); - Sensing the difference – creating “minor cinema” through new epistemologies; - Haptic media and hardwired body – a connection between senses and technology; - The anthropology of cinema – creating the place for experience; - Viewer- and user-centered approaches: (post)phenomenology, affects, neuro-cinema, - The logic of H+ – an advancement or a replacement; - The regimes of senses – the cultural determination of sensorium. - The prosthesis as a medium We are open to suggestions from researchers as to their own topics within the subject matter. Dear Friends and Colleagues, The Engagement Lab at Emerson College is accepting applications for our Master of Arts degree program Civic Media: Art and Practice (CMAP) for fall 2018. The priority deadline to apply is March 1st, 2018. After this date, we’ll start accepting students on a rolling basis and awarding scholarships for the program. We’re seeking interdisciplinary minded students and recent graduates who are scholars, entrepreneurs, socially engaged artists, civic leaders, and creative technologists to apply. We would love your help reaching anyone who is looking to refine their skills and position themselves more strongly in the field of civic media. The core experience and outcomes of the 12-month CMAP program are centered around thesis projects. These creative works highlight the relationship of media, art, and practice and explore a wide range of approaches to the art & design of civic media, including participatory digital campaigns, mobile apps, public art installations, interactive curriculums, and virtual platforms. These projects bring to life the theories and practices that CMAP students explore in coursework throughout the year. Alumni of CMAP are well positioned for the growing field of scholarship and applied work in civic media, including employment opportunities in government, community media, public media, non-governmental organizations, digital agencies, and cultural organizations. The Amsterdam Privacy Conference will take place on 5-8 October 2018 in the heart of Amsterdam. The goal of the conference is to bring together academics, policy makers, journalists, and practitioners to promote active discussion on timely topics, and foster debate on privacy issues between participants from various backgrounds and perspectives. The conference will include plenary sessions, parallel sessions, and panel discussions with invited speakers, as well as presentations from respondents to this call for papers. APC 2018 is organised by the Amsterdam Platform for Privacy Research (APPR), a network of researchers at the University of Amsterdam, with active participants from diverse fields, including philosophy, law, economics, computer science, medicine, media and communication studies and social sciences. APC 2018 is the follow-up to the highly successful conferences APC 2015 and APC 2012. Summer 2018 Research for Undergraduates in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University The Human Computer Interaction Institute is looking for talented and motivated undergraduates to join us for Summer 2018 conducting novel research at the edge of design, behavioral sciences, and computing technology. Students in our summer research program will work closely with mentors. Some example topics of research for Summer 2018 include: - Smart classroom sensors - Software engineering for HCI and security - Designing and developing educational games - Developing tools for citizen science - Designing better systems for the future of work - Improving online health support groups - Building smartphone privacy tools - Building tools to help people with disabilities be crowd workers The program runs for 10 weeks, from May 29 to Aug 3. Students receive a stipend and housing supplement. Ideal applicants are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors, with strong skills in one or more of visual or interaction design, behavioral sciences, or software or hardware development. Students from traditionally underrepresented groups in computing or who do not have access to research facilities at their home institution are particularly encouraged to apply. Previous research experience is not a requirement. The application deadline is Tuesday February 20th 2018, with decisions sent out by March 15.
