Exploring the role of future imaginaries in the making and governing of digital technology Call for Abstracts Deadline: 02.03.2018 Workshop Friday, 27 April 2018 Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society Französische Straße 9, 10117 Berlin, Germany Keynote: Sally Wyatt (Maastricht University) “We are on a mission to build a more open, accessible, and fair financial future, one piece of software at a time” promises the software platform Blockchain. “Imagine if everyone could get around easily and safely, without tired, drunk or distracted driving” envisions the self-driving car company Waymo(a subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc.). “The Regulation is an essential step to strengthen citizens' fundamental rights in the digital age and facilitate business by simplifying rules for companies in the Digital Single Market” claims the European Commissionwith regard to the General Data Protection Regulation. These examples show how imaginaries of future societies are enacted to promote digital innovations or legitimate certain modes of internet governance. They illustrate how software providers, tech companies and legislators dig into the rich pool of cultural norms, visions and values to support (or question) digital tools, rules and regulations. Future prospects seem to be central for making decisions in the present. What role do future imaginaries perform in the making and governing of present digital technology? How are they mobilised to push or oppose digital innovations such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, blockchain technology or open source/open data projects? How are prospective imaginaries shaped in policy discourses and governance practices regarding networked technology and global data flows? What significance do European specificities have in global technology imaginations? Can different mechanisms be identified in mainstream discourses and counter-narratives? What happens if future scenarios are contested and digital promises become contradictory? Themes of the Workshop These are central questions to be discussed in our workshop. We welcome theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions that help us understand how the future is mobilized to make and govern digital technology in the present. The workshop is organized around three central themes: 1. Theories and concepts to analytically grasp future visions and their roles in the making and governance of digital technology 2. Methods and tools to analyze the nexus between future imaginations and their functions in and impact on policy-making and technology development 3. Empirical research and case studies on future imaginaries and their roles in the making and governing of present digital technology Submission We welcome theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions from various disciplines that speak to the themes of the workshop. In 2013, I started Data & Society as an experiment. I imagined a research institute and a think/do tank all in one, bringing together researchers and practitioners and misfit toys. This crazy endeavor has worked better than I ever imagined. We’re now in the process of building the structures needed to make it a more sustainable organization. We’ve brought in a phenomenal executive director (Janet Haven) who understands the civil society and tech worlds deeply. Responsibilities Research: - Develop and implement overall research strategy for the organization, working closely with Founder/President, Executive Director, and research-oriented advisors, with an eye to impact on evolving field debates. - Ensure quality of Data & Society research outputs, including implementing a rigorous and transparent review process that includes a range of scholars. - Maintain an active profile as a researcher and scholar. Qualifications - PhD in the social sciences or related field and experience with qualitative sociotechnical research; - 10+ years academic or research work experience post-PhD; - Extensive academic and non-academic publication history; - Extensive professional experience in university or institute research environments; - Experience in research team building and management; - Public profile and ability to connect with non-academic audiences via writing and speaking; - Expertise in the social and cultural implications of data-centric and automated technologies; - Deep understanding of the public and closed-door debates occurring in media, government, the technology industry, and civil society around the issues raised by data-centric and automated technologies, and a clear set of ideas of the ways in which research can influence and shape those decision-making venues; - Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience managing down, laterally, and up for successful outcomes; - Comfort with a fast-paced work environment at a young and rapidly evolving organization. This is not a remote position; you must work full time from the Data & Society office in the Flatiron section of New York City, however this role does allow for some flexible scheduling and telecommuting; 2. Dear colleagues, as part of the STI Conference 2018 (http://sti2018.cwts.nl) we will be organizing a special track on the "Challenges of Social Media Data for Bibliometrics" (#sti18challenge). This specialized track focuses on the ongoing challenges for using data from social media platforms and from third party aggregators as sources for research metrics and scientometric indicators. These challenges include but are not limited to: --> platform-based restrictions in accessing social media data and potential biases resulting from limited access (also: biases introduced by data aggregators) --> black boxes, hidden algorithms, and lack of information about collection processes and context affecting the use of social media data and data aggregators -->lack of understanding of user activities (e.g. motivations to retweet, like, share) and user groups in academic contexts -->incomplete data (e.g. due to missing DOIs or identifiers not tracked by aggregators) and noise (e.g.due to bot-activity) We invite the following types of submissions: a) original research studying the quality of social media data and data aggregators for measuring scholarly communication b) short (hands-on) introductions and best practices for using data from one or more specific social media platforms or aggregators. Call for Papers “Video Games and Museums: Educational Digital Tools for the Participatory GLAM Space" 6-7 May 2018, University of Helsinki Digital tools with educational content – be they video games, apps, interactive websites or others – may intensively contribute to enhance participatory and educational experiences for visitors in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) spaces. New technology such as virtual reality and augmented reality additionally extend the limits of what can be represented, played, and experienced on multiple levels. This conference’s primary aim is to provide a platform for presenting and discussing themes related to the development of and research on educational digital tools, such as interactive platform such as video games (e.g. in the form of mobile apps) in relation to museums. We actively acknowledge the global aspects in such developments and research. This two days international conference at the University of Helsinki aims at bringing together persons working in the broad fields and/or interested in discussing educational digital tool development (especially but not exclusively video games) and the GLAM space (especially but not exclusively museums). I believe I am not the only one to whom Yahoo shows an ad ---------------------------------------------- Sponsored Banyan Hill Better Than Bitcoin A new technology is set to rocket up to 8,000% ---------------------------------------------- as high as the second regular link. Overall, at least five "similar" adds appear each time I visit yahoo.com I can't decide, if a) Yahoo is so desperate to earn money it shows such ads b) Yahoo is low on cash, so they create these ads in order to compile and to sell to health insurances a list of stupid people as potential clients for dementia treatment c) a university ethics review committee approved a scientific project with one or more research objectives and the reason I see it is completely scientific or d) it's a Canadian joke and the link leads to a page saying "get a job". Maybe there is somebody bored here who could investigate it.
