Building Platform Urbanism: Data, Design and Property Development Call for Papers Association of American Geographers Conference 2020 Denver, USA, 6-10 April 2020 Organizers Susan Moore (University College London) Scott Rodgers (Birkbeck, University of London) Sponsors Digital Geographies Speciality Group (Others TBC) Outline In recent years digital platforms have become increasingly involved and invested in designing and building urban environments. Some notable examples include Sidewalk Labs’ data-driven redevelopment proposals for Toronto’s eastern bayfront, Facebook’s 1500-resident company town built within its Menlo Park campus, and a number of new landmark office developments, such as Google’s 1000-foot-long ‘landscraper’ under construction in London. This session focuses on what is at stake in these kinds of deliberate interventions in the urban built environment, by and for digital platforms. Geographers and others have already extensively explored how digital platforms have had myriad implications for urban spaces, for example in food logistics (e.g. Deliveroo, UberEats), transportation (e.g. Uber, Lyft), property markets (e.g. Airbnb) or neighborhood politics (e.g. Nextdoor, Facebook). These dynamics between platforms and the urban arguably signal an emergent ‘platform urbanism’ (cf. Barns 2020; Rodgers and Moore, 2018; Stehlin et al., 2020) In this session, we are interested in a less-researched facet of such a platform urbanism: the more intended efforts of digital platform companies, or agents anticipating their interests, to design and/or construct particular built forms and new urban spaces. We will explore the extent to which such built forms and spaces might express the qualities and ideals of digital platforms. And conversely, the ways in which design and development processes have become increasingly tailored to anticipate and support such qualities and ideals. Is there something specific about platforms – as digitally-mediated, data-driven, cloud-based entities – that gives rise to particular designs or built environments? And how do these new urban spaces relate to emergent trends and conditions of possibility within and between the spheres of urban design, planning, real estate, development and governance? Contributions may address these broad questions with reference to a wide range of related phenomena, including for example: workspaces, residential neighborhoods, retail or entertainment districts, arts or cultural venues, data centres, public spaces, leisure facilities and infrastructures, spatial plans, architectural designs, conceptual visualizations, and emergent discourses in relevant design or built environment fields. Pertinent conceptual interventions are also welcome. Expressions of Interest We intend to organize 1-2 paper sessions, depending on quantity and quality of submissions. Dear colleagues, ***Apologies for cross posting*** I’m very pleased to announce this Call for Papers for Drone Cultures, an interdisciplinary symposium, 30 April – 1 May, at UNSW Sydney, with a keynote from Professor Caren Kaplan (University of California, Davis). CALL FOR PAPERS: DRONE CULTURES | ABSTRACTS DUE: 30 November 2019 Drones swiftly moved from the margins of the military to reshape war and surveillance, but they have also had wide-ranging effects on fields as diverse as wildlife conservation, agriculture, visual art, climate activism, urban policing and television production. Drone vision is rapidly transforming visual culture, generating novel aesthetics, changing how the world is witnessed and enabling new capacities to see, know and control. At the same time, drones themselves have become objects of significance, eliciting anxiety and hope, fear and desire. Unsurprisingly, diverse cultures have sprung up alongside and in response to their proliferating presence and growing accessibility. All this makes it crucial to understand the similarities, differences and complexities of these technologies and their impacts on how we sense, feel, know and act in the world. This two-day symposium brings together academics, artists and researchers to explore drone cultures from multiple perspectives and practices with the aim of generating dialogue across disciplinary boundaries to better understand the diversity of drones and drone cultures. How has drone vision influenced contemporary visual culture? How do practices, aesthetics, techniques and technologies move back and forth between military and non-military contexts? How have artists, writers and filmmakers critiqued, adopted and innovated drone technologies? How have drones changed how power is exercised and experienced? What cultures have sprung up around drones in conservation, activism, amateur photography and other contexts? How are drones and other remote sensing systems shaping and shaped by our desires and imaginaries? What does the proliferation of drones mean for the future of the human? While approaches from across the humanities and social sciences are invited, this symposium also warmly welcomes perspectives from information science, engineering and robotics. We invite proposals for academic papers, creative works and short documentaries. Academic papers can be full length (20 minutes) or provocations (7 minutes). Creative works and documentaries can be presented in panels alongside traditional papers if appropriate (20 minutes) or screened, displayed or performed outside typical panels. The position is for 30.4 hours per week (0.8 FTE) for the duration of one year. After positive assessment, the appointment will be converted into a permanent contract. Your tasks: Development and maintenance of tools for courses in the New Media program. For the MA and BA digital research methods courses, these tools include the Internet Censorship Explorer, Google Scrapers (Web, news, blogs), the Wayback Machine scraper, as well as programs that help map hyperlink networks within Wikipedia and parsing and analyzing Wikipedia edit histories. The conference has a longstanding interest in empirical, conceptual, theoretical and technical contributions, and has a tradition of innovation and inclusiveness. The plant is Atropa baetica, which is now endangered and included on the IUCN Red List.
