Birds of a Feather: How can internet researchers and Mozilla collaborate?

Hi everyone, I would like to propose a 'Birds of a Feather' meeting for anyone interested in discussing how internet researchers and civil society (and Mozilla in particular) can collaborate. I'm currently working in between both of these worlds: I work at the Mozilla Foundation as a research and data analyst for the Internet Health Report (https://internethealthreport.org/) and as an associate researcher at the Weizenbaum Institute. There have been some developments at Mozilla that show a great potential for a more intense collaboration that would benefit both: - Mozilla collaborates with researchers to demand better access to Facebook and YouTube data to improve public oversight. For example, in collaboration with researchers, it developed guidelines for a better Ad Archive API around the EU elections (https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/03/27/facebook-and-google-this-is-what-a…) With the prominence of digital methods at AOIR this year, I’m sure there is a potential for similar campaigns in the future. - The Mozilla Foundation is now concentrating their advocacy efforts on 'Trustworthy AI', a theme that overlaps with much of the research presented at AOIR (https://marksurman.commons.ca/2019/08/28/update-digging-deeper-on-trustwort…) - In addition, the Internet Health Report (where I’m involved) frequently relies on the work of internet researchers, but it targets a non-academic audience. I hope to learn more about how the relationship between Mozilla and academia can be further developed for mutual benefit. Are you interested in discussing how academia and civil society can better collaborate, and perhaps already have some ideas you would like to share? Are you perhaps in a similar position as me and would like to share some experience? Or are you just curious if your research would be interesting for an organization like Mozilla? ACM FAT* 2020 Doctoral Consortium

The third annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency (ACM FAT*) 2020, in Barcelona 27-29 January, invites PhD students in all disciplines including computer science, statistics, law, social sciences, the humanities, and education, to apply for the FAT* Doctoral Consortium (DC). The FAT* DC offers PhD students doing research on fairness, accountability and transparency in relation to socio-technical systems with a unique opportunity to engage in substantive interaction with experienced researchers regarding their proposed dissertation research and career objectives. It aims - to provide a setting for feedback on the research of participating PhD students; - to provide PhD students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other PhD students working in related areas or at a similar stage of their dissertation research; - to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration on shared research interests; and - to support a new generation of researchers by offering advice about publishing and career paths. The Doctoral Consortium will be held on Monday 27 January 2020, 9am-12 noon. The DC will include presentations by all participating PhD students, with plenary discussions, individual meetings with experienced researchers, discussions over breaks, peer-feedback, and panel discussions. We will also arrange lunch meetings for the participants on the other conference days. PhD students will be selected who have already settled on their thesis direction and who have made some progress in this direction, but still have significant research to complete. Applications will be reviewed according to the following criteria: clarity and completeness of application package, stage of research, evidence of research progress (please give references or links to published papers and/or technical reports) and assessment of contribution to and likely benefit from participating in the DC. Hello all! We are pleased to announce the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective, a new interdisciplinary group exploring the intersections of digital culture and ethnographic methods. We invite scholars at all levels from across universities to join us in fortnightly meetings where we will host speakers and workshop new ideas. We welcome those interested in online culture (Internet/platforms/social media), and the ethnographic study of digital technologies. The aim of the group is to establish a community of scholars of digital ethnography and to work through challenges in this emerging subdiscipline. Our curriculum is dedicated to the integration of media analysis and media production for social justice in a liberal arts setting. We seek a teacher-scholar who is committed to enhancing our culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and will complement existing faculty strengths. Dear Colleagues, If you are coming to Brisbane for AoIR, why not join us for Social Science in the Pub - Can we trust social media? We are meeting on Monday evening the 30th September in Major Mitchell’s bar at Little Big House, 271 Grey Street, South Brisbane. This is a public event organized as part of the YCC AoIR Satellite event<https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ycc-2019-trust-young-people-and-digital-med…>.
