So I stumbled into a developer who created one of those "floating" YouTube music video players. After six years of curating the original radio news "flash briefing," I thought hey, why not try video. Combining forces on Android (so far) we've come up with: http://tvnewsapp.com So, here's the deal. The YouTube API is pretty darn interesting and I'd love to connect with researchers who are experimenting with it. I am interested in ways to better automate how to surface live news streams. The app has scores of these. I never expected so many from so many countries. Some countries clearly are all in with nearly all news channels competing on Facebook while others while free on the web haven't joined the YouTube club. *Call for Volume: Media, Development and Democracy: historical and current connections* *Editor: Heloisa Pait* *Deadline: December 15, 2019* Connections between the emergence of national democracies, economic development, and the introduction of mass media have been studied for many decades, but there are still missing links in this complex web. In 1949, Daniel Lerner suggested the existence of a relationship between new media and the modern mentality in developing nations. Although much criticized, his insights influenced optimistic views of the impact of television and the internet around the globe. Here we ask a different question: what is the impact of State censorship and material restrictions on the press, in countries that have been witnessing continuous economic development? Do restrictions on the functioning of the media in the formative period of a nation have long-term impacts on economic development? Looking from a different angle, can a limited labor market, with few formal vacancies in competitive firms, make literacy less rewarding, discouraging private investment in education? How do low literacy rates influence political culture and the nature of the public sphere in a modern society? In this volume, we would like to examine the multiple relationships between economic development, adoption of new media, literacy and education, and democratic culture. We are interested in studies of so-called developing countries, and in particular those where there have been restrictions on the printing press, such as colonial Brazil and the Ottoman Empire, or which somehow differ from the Northern European and North American model of media development. We welcome papers using a variety of methods, particularly those bridging interdisciplinary gaps. Our goal is to point to new paths in the understanding of the challenges to achieving a free and just society. We welcome papers that discuss public policy regarding educational or economic reforms within that larger investigative framework, as well as research on the experience of particular groups. Research is particularly welcome on women, the African diaspora, and/or Marranos. The article “Liberalism Without a Press: 18th Century Minas Geraes and the Roots of Brazilian Development”, by the editor, which appeared on volume 18 of Studies in Media and Communications, further elaborates on the possible relations between media, development and the public sphere. Chapters will be divided into central focal areas within this literature to seek the widest breadth of current scholarship. In particular, studies are sought that examine: representations of crime and criminals in mass media; links between media representations of crime and related public beliefs and behaviors; the use of new/digital media in the commission/detection of crime or in the dissemination of crime stories; and advances in theory and/or methods relevant to studies of media and crime. Topics might include: 1. Crime and Criminals in Mass Media: Chapters may examine the representation of crime and/or criminals in news or entertainment media, possibly focusing on depictions of crime rates, criminal incidents, or characteristics of criminals such as race, gender, age, nationality, occupation, etc. 2. Theorizing Media and Crime: Chapters may explore classical and emerging theories used in studies of media and crime, such as uses and gratifications theory, the mean world syndrome, mediatization, media logic, and others. 3. The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) seeks an innovative scholar in the area of digital youth for an open rank, tenured/tenure track faculty position. SLIS is expanding its strengths in digital youth scholarship through innovative teaching, research, and service. Digital youth scholarship is an interdisciplinary area that investigates how contemporary children and young adults—who were born into and have grown up in this technology-rich society—learn, think, play, socialize, and engage in communities and the civic society. Digital youth scholars possess knowledge and skills related to: child and youth developmental characteristics; digital media and technologies; learning and community engagement through libraries, archives, and museums; and understanding the critical role of data and information in youth lives and society in the digital age. This knowledge and these skills make them uniquely qualified to critically examine the complex nature of digital youth and their engagement with technology in all aspects of their lives. The successful applicant for this position will join the OU SLIS faculty in the education of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students in various capacities including teaching courses, supervising independent courses, advising, and serving on students’ committees. The teaching responsibilities include two courses per semester. A successful candidate for this position will be able to teach required master’s courses and develop new courses on digital literacy and ethics for youth. The new hire will also advise master’s and Ph.D. students in the areas of digital youth, youth services, and public and school librarianship. The faculty member will conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, edited books, books, and conference papers. Seeking opportunities for internal and external funding is also expected. Additionally, the candidate will be committed to engagement in service to the profession and in the shared governance within the university. Please include a short bio in your submission ************************************************************************************************************************** CALL FOR DIGITAL MEDIA RESEARCH METHODS JOURNAL ARTICLES - TO BE PUBLISHED IN THE AFRICAN DIGITAL MEDIA REVIEW 2020 African Digital Media Review is published annually as a special edition of the journal African Journalism Studies, published by Taylor & Francis. It aims to explore the role of new digital technologies in African communication contexts. The 2020 edition will be dedicated to digital media research methods. Scholars from across sub-Saharan Africa are encouraged to submit abstracts for an article, as we hope to represent West, East, Central and Southern Africa. We aim to include a mix of digital media research methods, and are looking forward to diverse submissions such as: • online digital ethnographic approaches • large scale data analysis of social media analytics, • textual analysis of web media, • visual analysis of social media such as Instagram, • to small scale studies of apps and the communities that use them. We are particularly interested in debates around the methods best suited to African contexts: • What are the epistemological challenges and ethical conundrums that African socio-political environments present for the use of specific digital media research methods? • How have methods from elsewhere been adapted to diverse contexts on the continent? PLEASE NOTE: Make sure your abstract focuses on the research METHODS you followed – we have received a number of abstracts that focus on digital media research, but highlight general findings instead of focusing on methods. Birds of a Feather at 2019 AoIR Conference

Hello AoIRists, This year at the 2019 AoIR conference, we are once again encouraging attendees to gather together to discuss areas of shared interest. These meetings are referred to as ‘Birds of a Feather’, because they, well, flock together. While these meetings are not formally organised by the Conference Committee, we encourage AoIR members to post ideas on potential areas of interest, research, and projects to the AoIR mailing-list to seek interest from other members and conference attendees. Ideally, areas of interest will flock organically and in an inclusive manner, so please don’t be afraid to nominate your idea (and yourself!) for one of these sessions. The conference program this year leaves your time free on the Thursday evening, and if you opt out of our expertly crafted social outings, you might also consider flocking together on Friday evening. We think the best way to gather is in a social setting in one of the amazing spaces located around Brisbane’s city centre. Below is a list of places we think suit the Birds of a Feather concept very well, but please do get in touch if you require specific kinds of locations and/or resources. And if you’re gathering together as a large group, do make sure to book a table or room at your venue ahead of time, to make sure there’s enough space. CFP: Electronic Literature Organization, July 16-19, Orlando FL

Hi all, Since there are some overlaps between ELO folks and AoIR folks, I thought I'd share the CFP here. We invite submissions for presentations, performances, and exhibition pieces at the annual Electronic Literature Organization Conference and Media Arts Festival (ELO), to be held July 16-19, 2020, at the University of Central Florida in downtown Orlando. ELO seeks proposals related to electronic literature, or e-lit–literary works in which computation forms some essential part of the aesthetic. #ELOrlando offers an opportunity to share research and creative contributions within an engaging, collegial atmosphere comprising e-lit scholars and practitioners from across the globe. The theme for ELO 2020 is “(un)continuity”: participants are invited to explore fluidity and nonbinary concepts, including, re/presentation; categorization; spectra of light, sound, and the ultra/infra visible; social organization; unity; and discord. Presenters are invited to explore anything in the wider field of electronic literature, multimodal writing, digital art, literary games, or new media aesthetics.
