I wrote a very brief piece in a Norwegian newspaper about the new AoIR ethics guidelines. This is for a weekly column they have on the latest news in research, where researchers from different fields take turns to describe something new in their field. I’m not sure how many people actually read this, but I do quite like seeing AoIR and research ethics discussions in a newspaper. In the UK and worldwide, there is an increased interest to effectively analyse massive unbiased data, generated from very different sources and with many different features such as social networks, surveillance systems, smart cities, cyberphysical systems, address and find solutions on the vulnerability of public spaces and individuals. However, there are serious limitations to the use of conventional monitoring systems where human operators are asked to survey a large number of cameras with a wide geographical coverage or go through enormous amounts of recorded material for forensic investigations. We are keen to see how developments on complex systems, adaptive behaviours, and machine learning methods have impacted the field of crime detection and prevention in particular and the monitoring of public places in general. This conference follows the successful IDSS (Intelligent Distributed Surveillance Systems) events held in 2003 and 2004 and ICDP 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 to bring together researchers, industry, end-users, law-enforcement agencies and citizens groups to share experiences and explore areas where additional research and development are needed, identify possible collaboration and consider the societal impact of such technologies. Full papers are invited on all aspects of Imaging Surveillance technologies, from academia, industry, NGOs and others, to be selected for oral presentations or posters through a peer-review system. Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe volume now available

Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce that the proceedings volume from our Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe workshop in Poznan has been published by Springer. Details are available on their website: https://www.springer.com/cn/book/9783030291594 The Proceedings come from an event organized by IFIP Working Group 9.7 at the last IFIP World Congress. WG 9.7 is composed of industry professionals, historians, archivists, and others with an interest in the history of computing broadly defined. The contents of the volume are divided into six parts: 1. EASTERN EUROPE. The papers in this section offer new glimpses into the history of computing in Armenia, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. For instance, Szabo offers a compelling portrait of a computing class conducted with a chalkboard in Hungary. Armenian Computers: First Generations Sergey B. Oganjanyan, Valery V. Shilov, and Sergey A. Silantiev The Emergence of Computing Disciplines in Communist Czechoslovakia: What’s in a (Sovietized) Name? These papers were part of our collaboration with the Polish Information Processing Society and the Enigma Live event in Poznan. A highlight of these papers is co-authored by the children of two great names in the USSR: Anatoly Kitov and Victor Glushkov. They challenge the notion that Soviet computer science was a failure because it did not result in an ARPA-style national network. Kitov also details his own work in the first article to discuss Soviet control programs that monitored data transfer between multiple terminals for collaborative work. Greetings! Twitter is planning for the future of our developer platform. Recognizing the impact of academic research taking place with Twitter data, we have been investing in research to learn from the academic community. Researchers tell us that they use our API because it's the best source of public, conversational data. It’s a way to understand what the world is thinking about nearly any topic, from nearly any place, at any time. In fact, nearly 1/3 of new Twitter developer accounts have stated they're doing academic research. But we’ve fallen short in supporting and enabling them. When accessing our data sets, they face technical challenges, pricing obstacles, and lack of clarity on best practices. We want to make sure the voices of the community are heard as we design and plan for the future of our API and would greatly welcome participation from the AoIR community in this learning exercise. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2020". ### Submission Guidelines * Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. * Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of Full papers. * Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: * Author’s names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. * Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. * Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ... " is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al. Lecturer in Strategic Communication The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track Lecturer in Communication to teach in both the on-campus undergraduate and graduate programs. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in strategic communication. Teaching loads for these positions are typically 12 credits per semester (a 4/4 load), with the possibility of summer teaching. The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is presently in a period of expansion and innovation around new initiatives including strategic communication. This position would bring expertise and practical experience to the curriculum in the areas of public relations, electronic communication, and strategic communication. This faculty member would teach both traditional and developing strategies for designing, deploying, assessing, and critiquing strategic communication. Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must: a) have a doctoral degree in Communication or a related field by the time of appointment; and, b) a record reflecting experience teaching at the postsecondary level in communication.
