Legal challenges for research

Dear all, probably, you have seen the latest reports of Zoom shutting down a panel on Zoom censorship or Facebook's cease and desist letter to the NYU's political ad targeting project. I am interested whether there are more examples of legal challenges for researchers. I am particularly interested in issues revolving around GDPR and social media research, contract law and data collection from services such as LexisNexis or others, and terms of use and platforms. I am also interested in the role of university DPO's in reviewing research design, and the infrastructure or the modus operandi put in place (or not) by universities to enable researchers to comply with GDPR, and the legal support (or the lack of it) universities provide for their researchers to carry out their tasks. The Popular Culture Studies Journal is seeking authors to review works on any aspect of American or international popular culture. Specifically, we are interested in reviews of recent (i.e. published within the last two years) scholarly monographs or anthologies and general interest books examining all areas of popular culture from a variety of perspectives. We will also consider older seminal pieces that deserve a second look. got ethics? Two ethics panels tomorrow!

At least, this is the primary starting point of the approaches to developing ethics guidelines for internet research since the inception of AoIR - i.e., that enculturated human beings in general and practitioners in particular bring to the tables of ethical reflection and deliberation our extensive experience and capacities for ethical judgment and decision-making. Our dialogical processes have further involved applied ethicists, philosophers of technology, cross-cultural perspectives, any number of colleagues in the social sciences, humanities, mathematics, computer science, network engineering - you name it - issuing in, among other things, three documents on internet research ethics that have often proven to be centrally useful to both researchers and ethics review boards around the globe. Moreover, the AoIR conferences have included attention to ethical matters beyond internet research ethics: this year, in particular, the CFP included Power, justice and inequality in digitally mediated lives; Life, sex, and death vis-a-vis social media; and Political Life online. As many of you know/recall, this year inaugurates a new collaboration with the Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society (JICES) and AoIR. The aim is to encourage the development of papers and then articles appropriate to the JICES' foci on social and ethical issues evoked in "the planning, development, implementation and use of new media and information technologies." I'm very pleased to note that the CFP evoked a terrific series of papers that will be presented tomorrow, October 29, in two panels: Theoretical and Practical Research Ethics: Three Cases (12.00-13.00 UTC) Legal and Ethical Perspectives on (Big) Data, Platforms, AI and Algorithms (15.00-16.00 UTC) If you browse the titles and abstracts, you'll find a wide diversity of topics and approaches that will all but certainly overlap with one or more of the ethical matters of interest, if not compelling urgency, to you and yours, whether as practitioners and/or human beings and citizens in the contemporary worlds. Doing qualitative research which addresses inequalities in times of social distancing

Hello all Many of us are currently facing challenges as we seek to carry out qualitative research which addresses inequalities under socially distanced conditions. Lots of people are thinking creatively about how to overcome these challenges, and we’re aware of a number of events, webinars and discussions on this topic that have taken place. We are gathering together resources on this topic (including recordings of webinars, if available), which we will share publicly on our Living With Data <https://livingwithdata.org/> project website in August. Inquiries into memory modalities in digital media ecologies” Digital media ecologies open-up publics for articulations of people and groups beyond the established institutions. They promise to break with traditional knowledge hierarchies by providing new modes of participation and publicness. However, participatory memory making for people and groups in vulnerable social situations did not emerge by itself through the re-mediation of memories, which emerges from digitalization with its particular capacity for representing, sharing and sustaining knowledge (including emotional, practical and tacit knowing). Being aware of the fact that culture may cultivate integrative or disruptive forces, establishing inclusive politics of heritage for envisioning possible futures has become a key issue in memory making. Building on the rich knowledge on participation in memory making, we thus want to move on and explore the wide array of modalities, in which mediated memories contribute to opening-up established knowledge orders in public memory. This panel invites contributions on how memory modalities open-up established knowledge orders and foster social inclusive, future envisioning memory making. We seek to discover and inquire which organisational settings, discourses, business models and finances, cultural economies, legal frameworks or potential other modalities facilitate accessibility, agency and motivation of people and groups to partake in public memory making. Being part of the public memory is important for envisioning positive possible futures acknowledging people’s and groups’ history, identity, belonging, and membership, in questions of eligibility for public support or redemption, for partaking in economic outcomes or questions of ownership of cultural heritage resources. The goal of the tutorials is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (emails above), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal.
