Hi all, The Center for Democracy & Technology has an ongoing non-residential Fellows program <https://cdt.org/about/fellows/> as part of its role of building engagement between the research and policy-making communities. We are now accepting applications for the 2021-23 cohort and are looking for researchers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds advocating for digital rights. The Fellows program is a great opportunity for researchers to inform our policy advocacy work and to engage with policy-makers in the US and EU. What CDT offers to Fellows: * CDT commits to providing a platform for publishing relevant fellows’ work, as well as providing regular updates on key tech and internet policy developments. * Fellows are invited to attend certain CDT-branded public events and webinars, including our Annual Dinner, Tech Prom, as guests of CDT. * Throughout the fellowship, CDT Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with our team, and to provide feedback and suggestions on policy positions, white papers, research, and other outputs. Fellows are also encouraged to contribute original writing to CDT’s blog and engage in collaborative projects with our research and policy teams. Fellows may also be invited to conduct research in collaboration with CDT on mutually agreed projects that relate to CDT’s core research and advocacy work. Fellows are welcome to propose joint research projects that they think would be a good fit for CDT. Areas of expertise may include but are not limited to market research, campaign management, strategic planning, and brand management. Candidates must have an active program of research that considers how marketing principles and practices are impacted by emergent technologies giving rise to platforms such as e-commerce, social media, user-generated content, peer-based evaluation systems, and mobile technologies. Candidates must have an emerging reputation in a marketing-related field and will demonstrate research excellence through the demonstrated ability to attract research funding; the submitted research statement; and a good publication record in top-ranked and field relevant scholarly journals; as well as through strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Other evidence of research excellence such as presentations at significant conferences and awards and accolades will also be considered. Excellence in teaching can be demonstrated by strong letters of reference as well as by the teaching dossier outlining experience and accomplishments. The dossier must include a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations. The successful candidate will have a graduate appointment at the Rotman School of Management. The workshops will produce a report for NSF defining the key research goals for broadband in the United States for the next five or so years, while also reflecting on earlier research accomplishments and gaps. The workshop series will consist of three workshops, each with a different main theme: *Broadband Technology*, *Broadband Economics* and *Digital Inclusion*. Each of these three workshops will take place over two afternoons (U.S. Eastern Time), via videoconference. Abstract: This SoLAR webinar, led by Journal of Learning Analytics (JLA) editors Simon Knight, Xavier Ochoa and Alyssa Wise invites the community to engage with the complex question of what constitutes "rigorous research" in learning analytics (LA). LA is a highly interdisciplinary field drawing on machine-learning techniques and statistical analysis, as well as qualitative approaches, and the papers submitted to and published by JLA are diverse. While this breadth of work and orientations to LA are enormous assets to the field, they also create challenges for defining and applying common standards of rigour across multiple disciplinary norms. Extending the conversation begun in the 2019 editorial of JLA 6(3), this session will examine (a) indicators of quality that are significant in particular research traditions, (b) indicators of quality that are common across them, and (c) indicators of quality that are distinctive to the field of LA as a confluence of research traditions. This session will comprise brief presentations from 6 expert panellists in the field followed by a lively discussion among them with Q & A. This webinar will lay a foundation for future participatory sessions inviting conversation across the community more broadly. Chairs Alyssa Wise is Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Technology at New York University and the Director of LEARN, NYU's pioneering university-wide Learning Analytics Research Network. She holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and an M.S. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a B.S. in Chemistry from Yale University. Dr. Wise's research is situated at the intersection of learning and educational data sciences, focusing on the design of learning analytics systems that are theoretically grounded, computationally robust, and pedagogically useful for informing teaching and learning. Dr. Wise serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics is a Co-Editor of the Handbook of Learning Analytics. Xavier Ochoa is Assistant Professor of Learning Analytics in the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. He is also a member of the Learning Analytics Research Network (LEARN) at NYU. Xavier holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Leuven (Belgium), an M.Sc. in Applied Computer Science Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium) and a B.S. in Computer Science from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (Ecuador). Simon Knight is a senior lecturer in the University of Technology Sydney, Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. Philip Winne is Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology and former Canada Research Chair in Self-Regulated Learning and Learning Technologies at Simon Fraser University, Canada. His research interests include self regulated learning, metacognition, motivation and use of adaptive software to promote self regulation. Perspectives on Rigor in Computational Approaches to Learning Analytics Research Dragan Gašević is Professor of Learning Analytics in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, Australia and former President of Society for Learning Analytics Research. His research interests include developing computational methods that can advance understanding of information seeking, sense-making, and self-regulated and social learning. Jelena Jovanović is Associate Professor in the Department of Software Engineering, University of Belgrade, Serbia. Her research interests include the use of statistical / machine learning methods and techniques, semantic technologies, and other computational approaches that combine human and machine intelligence to improve understanding of the learning process. Perspectives on Rigor in Qualitative Approaches to Learning Analytics Research Kristine Lund is a Research Engineer in the Human and Social Sciences and the vice-director of the Language Sciences laboratory Interactions, Corpus, Learning and Representations at the University of Lyon, France. Dr. Lund's research interests include the multimodal co-construction of complex knowledge in goal-oriented computer-mediated human interaction and interactive phenomena such as explanation and argumentation in problem solving situations. Bodong Chen is Associate Professor in Learning Technologies and the Bonnie Westby Huebner Endowed Chair in Education & Technology at the University of Minnesota. The Cornell University Department of Information Science (IS) in the college of Computing and Information Science (CIS) has tenure track and tenured faculty positions available at its Ithaca, NY campus. The IS Department spans Cornell’s Ithaca and New York City campuses; faculty hired in this year's search will have their teaching and research based in Ithaca. This year’s search is primarily focused on hiring candidates who have a computational/technical focus on research areas within information science, including computational social science, network science, visualization, and technical approaches to HCI. We are especially interested in candidates whose scholarship and service further the department’s goals around diversity and inclusion. While the COVIDSafe app continues to be used, imperfect as it is, this panel considers how other, privately owned digital tracking applications are now also emerging in response to the wave of public health concerns, such as PwC’s “Check-in” application for workforces and the Apple-Google API. This panel discusses the emergence of privatised solutions to this public health crisis and places them within the context of criticisms and concerns of state-based surveillance. *This event is presented by Deakin University's Global Digital Publics Network (GDPN) & the Science and Society Network's Data Cultures research theme.* *Scheduled speakers include:* *Jessica Glenn*, AIM, who first detailed the code of COVIDSafe; *Vanessa Teague*, CEO of Thinking Cybersecurity and A/Prof at ANU; *Graham Greenleaf*, Professor of Law & Information Systems, University of New South Wales; *Peta Mitchell*, A/Prof at QUT Digital Media Research Centre; *Luke Heemsbergen*, Lecturer in Communication, Deakin University; *Monique Mann*, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Deakin University. Nominations are invited for the annual International Journal of Press/Politics Best Book Award, to be sent to committee members no later than March 1. Rationale The International Journal of Press/Politics Best Book Award honors internationally oriented books that advance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the linkages between news media and politics in a globalized world in a significant way. It is given annually by the International Journal of Press/Politics and sponsored by Sage Publications. The award committee will judge each nominated book on several criteria, including the extent to which the book goes beyond analyzing a single case country to present a broader and internationally oriented argument, the significance of the problems addressed, the strength of the evidence the book relies on, conceptual innovation, the clarity of writing, and the book’s ability to link journalism studies, political communication research, and other relevant intellectual fields. Eligibility Books written in English and published within the last ten years will be considered. Monographs as well as edited volumes of exceptional quality and coherence will be considered for the award. Books by current members of the award committee are ineligible and committee members will recuse themselves from discussion of books by members of their own department, works published in series that they edit, and similar circumstances. Award committee The award committee consists of Cristian Vaccari (the editor of the International Journal of Press/Politics), Sophie Lecheler (chair of the Political Communication Division of ICA), and Seth Lewis (chair of the Journalism Studies Division of ICA). The nomination must specify why the book should receive the award by outlining the importance of the book to the study of media and politics and by identifying its international contribution and relevance.
