Dear colleagues, The next Knowledge Commons webconference organized by the International Association on the Study of the Commons (IASC) will take place online on 9-11 June 2021. Janssen, and Charlie Schweik -- IASC 2021 Knowledge Commons Virtual Conference https://2021knowledge.iasc-commons.org/ Aims & Scope The virtual conference, a 3-day meeting with pre-recorded and live events, will address problems defined by knowledge systems, including innovation spaces, digital resources like Wikipedia and Stack exchange, open-source software development, the future of science and education, the archival of existing knowledge, cultural commons and citizen science. What are the opportunities (low costs of sharing and reproduction, collaboration, access) and challenges (privacy, security, freeriding, inequality, incentives, manipulation, artificial intelligence biases, exclusion, trust)? We anticipate four overarching themes: Classic Knowledge Commons and Practices Technologies, Infrastructure and social systems supporting the development of Knowledge Commons General Knowledge Commons Issues COVID-19 Related Knowledge Commons When you submit your abstracts we ask for a list of keywords. During the conference you can create your “playlist” of presentations and sessions based on the keywords. *Re-spatializing Digital Labor* Organizers: Ryan Burns and Luke Bergmann Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers, Seattle, WA, April 7-11, 2021 It is now an urgent moment for geographers to revisit how we think of the spaces of digital labor. By now, the platforms mediating and organizing work are well-known, and their implications increasingly theorized. UberEats, Lyft, Didi Chuxing, and Fiverr scaffold the gig economy wherein workers perform ad hoc jobs delegated through the platform; Yelp, Amazon, Baidu, and OpenStreetMap coordinate volunteered data production; and tech workers for major corporations like Google, Apple, Tesla, and Alibaba reshape regional political-economies. The geographies of this digital labor are critical to understanding its social, political, and economic implications, but scholars have primarily made sense of its geographies by engaging narrow conceptions of "space" and "labor" that obscure important relations and processes. Digital labor is often understood to occur within Euclidean geometries, under the premise of remuneration, and through Marxian conceptions of value. At the same time, digital labor discussions often under-theorize immaterial and affective labor, attentional economies, and moral economies. A more planetary view of digital labour would further draw out its uneven geographies -- with geopolitical implications -- and emphasize new empirical imperatives such as diversifying case studies or mobilizing comparative approaches. In short, broadening the purview of what digital labor is and where it happens can challenge some of the conceptual framings that have driven digital labor studies to date. This session seeks to rethink the spatial frameworks through which geographers grasp work conducted in and through the digital. In turn, we hope to reclaim many forms of (digital) work whose spatialities have occluded them from our attention. We welcome interdisciplinary submissions from scholars looking broadly at the intersections of space, labor, and the digital, and their combined social, political, and economic implications. Themes of submissions could relate, but not be limited, to: -Relational, representational, networked, hybrid, or topological spaces of digital labor -Immaterial digital labor of affects, emotions, and "experiences" -Spaces of/in/for/through digital social reproduction -(Re)visualizing non-Euclidean geometries of digital labor -Moral economies producing spaces for digital labor and its commodification -Attentional economies and their spatialities, political-economies, and epistemological framings -Automation of digital labor: its spatial technologies, socio-political technologies, and the digital-material spaces for their manifestations -Valorized practices of non-work, like games, CAPTCHA, information search, play, and communication -Using digital labor to question static regional-geographic categories like "Global South" and "territory" To be considered for inclusion in this session, please email your abstract of 250 words to ryan.burns1(a)ucalgary.ca and luke.bergmann(a)ubc.ca by *October 19, 2020*. Deadline extended - Special Issue: Ethical Pluralism and Intercultural Information Ethics in Asian Contexts Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia (JCEA), Vol 20, No 1 - Summer 2021 Invited editor: Charles M. Ess, University of Oslo (c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no) The early 1990s and the Internet’s rise as an engine of globalization forced a central task upon emerging Intercultural Information Ethics (IIE): how to conceptualize and implement a global information and computing ethics conjoining (quasi-) universal ethical norms and principles with a robust defense of local, culturally variable identities and practices? Discourses pitting a homogeneous imposition of Western values and norms against resistance to such homogenization for defending local cultural identities, but at the cost of potential fragmentation and isolation, first forced these issues. Increasing recognition of “computer-mediated colonization” – as Western-centric cultural norms and communicative preferences, embedded in ICT design, were imposed upon “target” cultures – made these concerns still more urgent. In response, ethical pluralisms (EPs), as conceptualizing connections (such as shared norms) preserving irreducible local differences, were developed and successfully implemented in both Western and non-Western contexts. But Western-based EPs remain open to critique. In Asia, EP is integral to conceptions of resonance and harmony in Daoist, Confucian, Buddhist, and Islamic traditions. Furthermore, Chinese and Indian technological innovation hubs have also emerged, grounding further exploration of Asian-rooted conceptions of EP, resonance, and harmony, which remain central to an IIE opposing colonizing adaptation of Western values and norms in Non-western cultures. These are especially critical vis-à-vis the ongoing encroachment of advanced ICTs, e.g. AI, Big Data, the IoT, “surveillance capitalism” and the Chinese Social Credit System, as increasingly defining our cultural lives. Our primary questions: what sorts of EP and similar notions of resonance or harmony might help resolve these central problems in the contemporary developments of (East) Asia? And: do earlier IIE traditions and evaluation of “radical” technologies fruitfully respond to even “more radical” emerging ICT challenges evoked by contemporary, far more powerful ICTs? This special issue of the JCEA invites papers that deal with theoretical and practical dimensions of EP, notions of harmony and resonance in contemporary Asian contexts, and/or traditional/recent resonances of ICT-related challenges. We are particularly interested in but not limited to: · Critical evaluations and possible expansions of contemporary EP, especially as oriented towards / grounded in (East) Asian contexts · Concrete examples of EP in praxis – whether successful or not in sustaining shared norms and irreducible local differences in (East) Asian contexts · Theoretical and practical explorations of (East) Asian relatives of Western-centric pluralisms from Confucian, Buddhist, and other local traditions – e.g., of resonance, harmony, etc. – that might offer advantages over EP on both theoretical and practical grounds.
