Fellowship Opportunity: Democratizing the Datafied Society The Data Justice Lab is looking for fellows to collaborate with us on exploring how to democratize the datafied society. The fellowships can either be based at the Lab in Cardiff, UK, or be conducted online. We welcome proposals from both academics and practitioners, and we are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in applications from the Global South. Your project proposals should relate to our current work in which we explore how affected communities address, influence, and resist the increasing roll-out of data systems, AI and automated decision-making in the governance of societies, and in which we investigate building-blocks for a more participatory and democratic form of data governance. Fellows will work with us for 2-3 months (we will also consider applications for shorter or longer periods). The fellowship should take place between March and September 2023. You are welcome to propose an exact time (within this broader period) that you prefer. The Department of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Indigenous Digital Arts, Culture, and Media. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a terminal degree: either an MFA or a PhD in Communications; Humanities; Indigenous Studies; Information Studies; Journalism Studies; Media Studies; Social Sciences; Visual and/or Performing Arts or a related field, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates with an MFA should have the degree in hand by the time of application. Candidates with a PhD must have the degree in hand by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. We welcome applications from candidates who demonstrate a wide range of methods such as: relational, reciprocal, socially-engaged, or collaborative research praxis, and/or creative practices of refusal which may include land- and place-based, site-specific, interactive, and participatory research and storytelling, which may engage in intersectional forms of activism. We especially encourage candidates working in one specific community and/or translocally across Indigenous communities and nations in Turtle Island, or more broadly in the Americas, the Pacific Rim, Borderlands or Circumpolar Indigenous Nations. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a significant professional and/or artistic record of creative impact within communities on and/or beyond Turtle Island; artistic mentorship or leadership; recognition as a knowledge-keeper; established practice in storyworks; published works; major awards or accolades; invited presentations/performances/tours/workshops; artistic residencies; or similar experiences. Candidates must be able to show experience and engagement with at least one Indigenous community on Turtle Island, including relationship building, long-standing relationships, and/or work with community leaders and Elders, as demonstrated in strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Most sincerely, Jess Call for Papers: Flow Volume 29 Special Issue 4: The Struggle Is (for) Real: Cultivating Authenticity in the “BeReal” age The viral popularity of BeReal prophesizes the next generation of social media and social sharing platforms. The image-centric sharing platform, launched in 2020 by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau, promotes itself as a platform for people who hate social media. The platform’s 10 million active users receive a daily notification reminding them it is “time to BeReal” while allowing two minutes to snap their current moment. Already recognized as the “antidote to social media fakery” (Duffy & Gerrard, 2022), BeReal encourages authenticity through the platform’s logic and design while policing users' labor through its emphasis on capturing each post in a single shot. BeReal cultivates a return to simplicity with its minimalist interface and simple user experience flow (Boffone, 2022). In the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, BeReal promotes a sense of digital collectiveness as users share their pandemic moments and build a digital community. With increased social media fatigue, BeReal promises a platform experience where creative work and posting practices neither center around advertisements nor influencers (McKoy & Scanlan, 2022). This special issue of Flow opens a space to discuss this platform. What do BeReal’s unique affordances provide for users? How do they catalyze certain user behaviors and practices over others? How will BeReal shift influencer and creative economies? Is BeReal just another social sharing fad, or will the platform have a more permanent impact on digital platform cultures? As one of the first scholarly forums about BeReal, we welcome scholars to grapple with this emerging critical conversation interrogating BeReal’s role in the following topics and beyond: * Methodological ethics and concerns for studying BeReal * Telecommunications law and media policy * The future of advertising on social platforms * BeReal’s user experience * Race, Gender, and BeReal * Cross-cultural and/or transnational analyses of platform use * Influencer economies and platform labor * Social sharing v. social media * Behind the scenes of BeReal: authenticity and curation * Social media fads * Slow social media * Gamification of social platforms * Abolitionist and anti-carceral analyses of surveillance on BeReal To be considered for this issue, please submit a completed column of 1200-1500 words, along with at least three images (.gif or .png) or embeddable audiovisual materials with image sources. For some, AI is being positioned as a fix to our social problems, which in turn will change how we live, communicate, work and travel. Others raise substantive concerns that these developments might reinforce inequality, exacerbate the opacity of decision-making processes, and ultimately question human autonomy. We are thus living in a time when the infrastructures and institutions of our everyday lives are being (re)built at the hands of techniques which already elude popular and professional understanding; but while the controversies about the specific pathways to be taken are still visible, we can already perceive elements of closure and institutionalization. Our symposium invites contributions from an international audience to interrogate the shaping of AI. Building on an international collaboration between research teams from Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Canada <https://www.shapingai.org/>, we invite presentations that pursue critical engagements with AI’s media representations, policy framings, and scientific debates. Crucially, we also invite epistemic reflections in how we are all Shaping AI, including practice-based research or research-creation. Rationale The International Journal of Press/Politics Hazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award honors internationally oriented books that advance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the linkages between news media and politics in a globalized world in a significant way. It is given annually by the International Journal of Press/Politics and sponsored by Sage Publications. The award committee will judge each nominated book on the following criteria: the extent to which the book contributes to internationally relevant knowledge; the significance of the problems addressed; the strength of the evidence the book relies on; conceptual innovation, clarity of writing; and the book’s ability to link journalism studies, political communication research, and other relevant fields of intellectual and scholarly inquiry. Eligibility Books written in English and published within the last ten years will be considered. Monographs as well as edited volumes of exceptional quality and coherence will be considered for the award. Description: Demonstrations will showcase research prototypes and commercially available products in a dedicated session. Demo submissions must be based on an implemented and tested system that pursues one or more innovative ideas in the interest areas of the conference. Demonstrations are an excellent and exciting way to showcase implementations and get valuable feedback from the community. Each demo submission must make clear which aspects of the system will be demonstrated, and how these will be demonstrated on-site as well as online. To better identify the value of demos, we also encourage authors to submit a pointer to a screencast (max. 5 minutes on Vimeo or YouTube) or any external material related to the demo (e.g., shared code on GitHub). Descriptions of demonstrations should have a length of max. 5 pages + 1 page of references in the new ACM single-column style. On an extra page (not to be published), submissions should include a specification of the technical requirements for demonstrating the system at UMAP 2023. Late-Breaking Results ● Max. 7 pages + max. 2 additional pages for references; ● (Required) unpublished page with a list of questions the authors aim to get feedback on; ● Publication in ACM UMAP 2023 Adjunct Proceedings; ● Presentation as a (potentially virtual) poster at the conference. Description: Late-Breaking Results (LBR) are research-in-progress that must contain original and unpublished accounts of innovative research ideas, preliminary results, industry showcases, and system prototypes, addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization. In addition, papers introducing recently started research projects or summarizing project results are welcome as well. We encourage researchers and practitioners to submit late-breaking work as it provides a unique opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work, and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. Late-Breaking Results papers have a length of up to 7 pages + 2 pages of references in the new ACM single-column style and will be presented to the conference as posters. On an extra page (not to be published), submissions should include a list of questions that the authors aim to get feedback on during the poster session at UMAP 2023. UMAP has a *no dual submission* policy, which is why full paper submissions should not be currently under review at another publication venue. All categories will be presented at the poster reception of the conference, in the form of a poster and/or a software demonstration following poster format. Sanctions, war, and the sovereignty of RuNet | Online seminar with Ksenia Ermoshina on 13 Dec

Dear colleagues, A quick reminder that our online Data Sovereignty seminar series will take place on 13 December at 15.00 (CET) with Ksenia Ermoshina (CIS-CNRS) on the project of the sovereign Russian internet in the context of the ongoing war and economic sanctions. Registration: https://brussels-school.be/event/data-sovereignty-seminar-5sanctions-war-an… While the Russian authorities have been tightening their control over RuNet for the last decade, there have been multiple possibilities for circumvention and evasion both for the RuNet users and for Internet Service Providers. We have previously examined the dynamic relations between the ISP community and the regulators, and described various tools and practices used by ISPs to avoid total control over the networks. However, with the adoption of the law on "Sovereign Runet" in 2019, Roskomnadzor hardened its grip over the networks. The new generation of DPI middleboxes called "TSPU", officially "made in Russia", changed the way RuNet was filtered and left little to no chance for ISPs to boycott censorship and surveillance over their users. However, after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the technological sovereignty project was challenged — on the very level of infrastructures. Sanctions of technological companies against Russia led to a crisis of both components and software solutions, revealing a profound dependency of the RuNet on foreign technologies. The presentation will explore the effects of sanctions on the project of the Sovereign Runet, based on a mixed-methods approach: interviews with ISPs and vendors of information control equipment, analysis of vendors' websites and technical documentation of the equipment, analysis of websites and materials of specialized exhibitions focused on cybersecurity equipment and finally, network measurements.
