CFP: CrisisFACTS at TREC-2023 - http://crisisfacts.github.io You are invited to participate in the second year of the CrisisFACTS crisis summarization and fact extraction track at TREC. This year, we have expanded the track’s event set with ten new crises, for a total of 18 crisis events<https://crisisfacts.github.io/#events>. We invite you to participate by submitting a collection of facts, extracted from data we provide across Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, and news articles, for each day of these crisis events. These facts provide daily summaries of crises, as described in the online information space. Submissions are due 1 September (see “Important Dates” for more information), so you have the summer to participate. See http://crisisfacts.github.io for more information on data access and registering with TREC. If you’re looking for a way to apply ChatGPT and related LLMs to a novel problem, look no further, as synthesizing daily summaries of crises from multiple social media streams is an important research topic. Methods developed and evaluated in this context could also be used in other spaces, from news summaries to describing disinformation campaigns, public health campaigns, and a variety of other information tasks. Participants from prior years of CrisisFACTS and its predecessor, TREC-IS, have had good success in getting papers describing their approaches published at the annual Information Systems for Crisis Response And Management<https://iscram.org/> conference. Hello dear AOIR colleagues, What are the ethical guidelines for analyzing reader comments to newspaper articles for newspapers behind a paywall? An example would be The New York Times. Reader comments are not accessible unless one is a paid subscriber or unless an article is gifted. Is this similar to Facebook where groups are not public? For context, I have a couple of articles where I want to analyze the reader comments. Hoping to get some insight. ethical considerations for a publicly-shared Twitter dataset?

I am writing the list for ethics guidance on reusing a publicly-shared Twitter dataset I found <https://github.com/DrMassie/Covid_tweets/> for academic research. The data contains "four variables are in each dataset: created_at (i.e., the date of the tweet), username (i.e., the handle of the user), text (i.e,. *the tweet itself*), and location (i.e., information on user profile that the user put as his/her location)." In particular, has the data has been shared properly? As far as I can tell, "properly" would mean "in accordance with the Twitter ToS". After reading the current Twitter ToS <https://twitter.com/en/tos> and developer agreements <https://developer.twitter.com/en/developer-terms/agreement> I am still unsure. (I would ask our copyright librarian - but she is on sabbatical until January!) The associated paper - which is quite interesting - is: Fogarty, B., Massie, K., and Svistova, J. (2024). Unmasking Twitter discourse: An infodemiology study of Covid-19 mitigation practices. *The Atlantic Journal of Communication*. http://doi.org/10.1080/15456870.2023.2220855 They say "*The data and files that we have generated are freely available for public and academic use as long as our original work is sited *(sic) *as the source*." If your research pipeline has been caught in the crossfire of these and similar developments, this one-day Post-API Conference is for you. We’re looking to convene some of the brightest minds working on these issues across disciplines to help identify the most viable solutions and alternatives. To encourage informal conversation between participants, the conference will adopt a nontraditional structure. Participants will be organized into four informal plenary panels–two in the morning and two in the afternoon–each of which will begin with a series of four 5-minute lightning talks. However, most of the time will be spent in large-scale moderated discussions between participants and panelists. Each of the four panels will focus on one of the following topics: Gaps. What tools/software/workflows/perspectives are missing from our research toolkits? How can we stay nimble and responsive to a constantly changing data ecosystem? Education. What tools/software/workflows/perspectives have you developed or used that you’d like to showcase? What broad types of education do people in this area need (e.g. does everyone need to learn to code)? Storage and access. How can we overcome challenges in post-acquisition data storage and access, especially across institutions? Ethics. What ethical considerations should we bear in mind as we plow forward? Would it be worth the effort to create a broad, interdisciplinary ethical framework?
